Jim: Brum have plenty of IP ranges left. I've have 5 full address ranges. Four are continuous and were assigned back when BGfL started. The fifth was for our remote site annex and they just pulled a range out for me.

Do your LEA provide a gateway? In Brum we have CISCO 2500s set up to route traffic out to the MAN, the core proxy servers and ultimately the internet. If they provide all of this, your really don't want to be changing subnet masks - you may end up cutting your users off from LEA resources/the internet. I'd also not arbitrarily pick a new IP range and add it to your DHCP - your LEA may have assigned that to another school and you could cause no end of headaches. If you can't get the LEA to any of this, try VLANing.

Did anyone else read the accouncement about BCC continuing the Capita contract, but demanding £150m be saved over the 7 years? They've basically admitted it was a mistake to close down the old Education IT department and outsource. They've even said cost savings can be made by brining some projects internal again! Someone people made a lot of gains out of the Service Birmingham Crapita/EdIT co-venture, and it wasn't the end users of the service.

I'm testing the extended support updates. Running manual installs on a VM first, then slipping them into WSUS. Going 7 from August, but now I have access to the updates I may as well make my XP clients as safe as possible for the next 5 weeks (unlike the last 9 weeks!)

Anyone else having problems with updating Sophos AV clients off site? Via http://sophosremote.bgfl.org/ (and along to http://sophosremote.bgfl.org/CIDs/S000/SAVSCFXP/) I'm getting HTTP 500 errors, and it's not asking for authentication.

You could install it on thousands of PCs if you're organisation is that large. You either license via FTE staff count or number of devices. If you license FTE you can install the software on as many PCs as you like as long as you tell them the correct FTE count. If you license on number of devices, then you can only install the software on the number of PCs you've bought.

XBMC on a Pi, is deadly slow though. And forget anything close to HD. I've used an old Core 2 Quad mobo, stuck it into a "desktop" style case and installed XBMC on it. We use the Playstation BluRay remote most of the time, but if it fails I've got a little wireless Microsoft Arc mouse plugged in. I keep a central XBMC database on a server share, and we access the media on the home server via that. Works a treat. We also use the iPad app for XBMC, not only can you pause/play/change media with it, you can also browse everything else, find subtitles etc. It's just great.

Am I the only one who stops whatever I'm doing after an XP re-install and actually listens to all of this? Am I a bit mad?!

For any NASA buffs (Hell, even for a science lesson!) the NASA Engineering Photography department have released for free their Shuttle celebration movie. It has been on YouTube, but the ISO here has much better quality. The standard of these engineering cams are just fantastic. You can see each main engine ignite, start to burn, come up to pressure, see the mach shocks - stuff that happens in a fraction of a second in real time.
