Really hoping someone can help here. I am using Apple Configurator to restore around 30 iPads to their original state. I installed the Yosemite update 10.10.1 and the update to Apple Configurator 1.7.1 but I am having problems when restoring or preparing iPads. They are detected and when I click prepare it starts the motion of downloading iOS etc but everytime it gets stuck on * Installing iOS 8.1.2 It stays on this screen forever, I left it days and it was the same. Does anyone have any ideas. I have tried wiping the iPad so it has nothing on it no locks or anything but still it stalls every time. Thanks

@zag I wish I worked at your school I can only dream of a spare server but your right it would make it a lot easier :-) I should push management for a spare one even if it is of less spec CPU wise to bring it down to the thousand quid mark as last time we bought hosts they were around £3-4k each!

@zag I'm not sure I agree. It depends on how complicated your setup is. I have a four node cluster and rebuilding a host would easily take me the best part of a day to get it to be identical to the other nodes in terms of software, updates, drivers, equallogic tools, veeam, ups software and config, iscsi connections. That's before I guess how to add it back to the cluster seeing as I have never had to do it.

@kestrel1 Thanks for this update looking forward to seeing the results. We have about 6 of the 48 port 1810's left onsite some being taken out because of this fault. We tend to only see this problem on 2 out of 6 left in production. It only seems to happen every month or so, so it could be worse but if there is a fix I would be really happy to know. How often do you see the problem @kestrel1?

@Colindean2000 and @synaesthesia We also have some of the VeryPC Flex cases with the Vesa mounts. I agree they are probably one of the best cases for education at the moment. We bought ours from Zoostorm, if there is anyway we don't have to deal with them again I would pay extra just for the case. Just setup our Smoothwall box the other day to do this. It was really easy, you just turn it on, give the external address and then the internal IP and it just worked. Brilliant if you have Smootwall already

Yes it's a BT point to point circuit. Apart from setting an ip for the vlan interface in the core switch and a helper IP address are there any other routes or acl's I would have to setup? Does the DHCP have to be at our end for the inter vlan routing to work? Lol I wish I knew a but more about this like you :-)

At the minute we have setup a vlan for byod wireless and one for ip phone and then one new one for the primary school, we can talk over the new vlan to the primary school already if I tag the network port

No problem I think I've seen references to helper ip's and you've saved me from setting up unnecessary secondary network cards :-)

@FN-GM sounds like a plan, thought I must be missing something, With your plan would DNS stay at the primary school? And would I remove dhcp at the primary school after the helper ip and new scope at are end is setup?

We have managed to get a WAN 100Mb point to point link put in place to a Primary School in our academy and I am keen to know what other people have done already or what you think the best setup would be? The main things we want to achieve are the following: • Primary school to use our filtering (Smoothwall) and share our internet connection • Primary school to use our finance system and other web portals • Primary school to use our IP phone system • Use Impero on Primary school PC’s so we can remotely support The three main ways I am thinking would be: • Use VLAN’s on either side of the link and add secondary network cards to our virtual servers we want to provide access to. I think this would work for everything apart from Impero as I am not sure how the Impero server would work if at all with two network cards. Plus a negative to this is it adds quite a lot of configuration change to each server we want to give access to. • Setup the primary school to change their network addressing to match ours and then restrict the DHCP scope to use addresses we wouldn’t on our side, and then block DHCP between the link (not really looked into this but I am sure it could be done) we could then plug the link into our core switch and all machines would be able to talk freely to each other and we could also setup a trust between domains? • Share DHCP and DNS but I guess this would increase traffic and if the link failed then everything at their end would come to a halt maybe setup a secondary DHCP, DNS at their end? Now am I missing something is there an easier way to achieve what we are wanting to do? Or has anyone done it slightly differently? There are only around 50 PC’s at the Primary School so it isn’t going to be huge traffic and we are not planning on sharing file shares or anything like that. Cheers

@Epick on our Samsung NotSoMagic TV using the remote when you setup the switch on schedule you can choose the startup input. We have two identical samsung TV units and I remember one of them was a right royal pain trying to get it to select the HDMI on startup and we ended up using VGA but the other one was fine, so good luck :-)

I would recommend contacting Meraki, even though it is free when I had a problem they were fast on getting back to me and quite helpful if I remember.

@Epick one is connected by cable ties to the wall mount, sounds dodgy but it is really sturdy due to the shape of the Revo, we used two cable ties connected together in a X shape works very well. The second is above the false ceiling on a shelf.

+1 on this, I remember having the same conversation with Papercut a few years ago when we first looked at buying it and they said it was not possible, looking forward to what @MatthewL finds out. Cheers

We have bought Casio LED projectors for coming up to the last 5 years since they were first bought out on the market and all the hype about the 5 year warranty/10000 hour warranty and the potential for it to go on for a long time has kept us buying them even due to the high initial cost. We have about 90 onsite here mainly XJ-A130 and A131 and wanted to let you know of recent issues. I would say roughly 15-20% of all of the units have been sent back now due to one (I believe) inherent fault which are lots of tiny pixels on the image which when I ring they all seem aware of this issue and no further questions seem to be asked regarding the fault. I was wondering how many other people are experiencing this fault and is it on the same level? I am also concerned about the quality of the refurbished units Casio are sending us as replacements for the faulty units. I have had two sent back with smudges and hairs inside the lens and recently one sent to us with a cable caught in the fan and the replacement for the replacement has a smudge mark on the image. It’s not the end of the world as I know if I ring them up they will send another one but everything at Casio seems to take a long time. You speak to one person on the phone who logs the call takes all details which takes about 15 minutes normally and then a few days later someone else rings you to arrange collection. This is worlds apart from the experience we used to have with Epson who would remember all your details, log a call in a few minutes and send an engineer out the next day. I am thinking about contacting Casio expressing my concerns but was wondering has anyone moved away because of these issues or have any input into my problems? Cheers as always

Surely some people backup their physical hosts though?

Hi @zag your not really missing much, I guess its just for disaster recovery. We have 4 hosts and all the VM's could easily go on 3 without any issues at the moment. I guess it would save time though if the Host OS went corrupt for whatever reason and instead of rebuilding the server with all the configs and drivers, updates etc from scratch I could just blow an image and get backup and running? So do you use Hyper-V or VMWare? Cheers

Please can anyone let me know what software they are using to backup their Hyper-V Physical hosts when they are part of a cluster. We use Veeam to backup all VM's in the cluster which works well and have been using DPM to backup the hosts but since I applied some Windows updates during the Easter holidays to the hosts in the cluster DPM has been throwing up some VSS errors on the hosts and even causing the cluster service to stop on certain hosts failing the VM's to another host. I have had enough of DPM now and the way certain updates break it and need to change software before I go mad. Can anyone suggest anything other than DPM for backing up the physical hosts that's works well with a cluster? Cheers

We recently bought one of these around £130 ex vat Logitech for Business Logitech BCC950 it has a good mic which should be able to pic up even if you are not facing it and the camera has a remote that you can use to move the camera around and zoom into objects. The cable it comes with as well is long so you should be able to position it easily. It might not be 100% what you are after but works really well for the money. Also a god send is it is true plug and play on windows 7 no drivers to install so we can lend it to anyone to use for Skype, WebEx etc

A cheaper way to do it might be HP 5500-24G-4SFP HI Switch (JG311A) roughly £1700 which will give you 24GbE ports and 4 fibres, and then an expansion for the switch HP 5500 HI 8-port SFP Module (JG314A) roughly £500 so in total you end up with 12 fibres. You can add a redundant power supply for about £150 (JD362A) as well.

Got to say I really liked the look of AirCatch when I first saw your post on the 1st of April. I downloaded the trial and it worked well. I spent a day making my own though as the concept is quite easy and the price fairly high seeing as its an annual cost of £595 for us. A local mail server and a script to download the files and pop them in the right folder along with a profile made in Apple Configurator for the mail settings deployment. It depends if you have the time I guess. Cheers
