We tried synthetic full like you on a weekly schedule and although during the week days the backups were fast at the weekend the synthetic full was taking 48 hours plus to complete or sometimes failing altogether. We then went back to reverse incremental, it's slower on average but still completes all our backups within our backup window, takes less space and you always have a latest full backup so recovery should be faster.

Did this only a few days ago and worked a treat. We do it a couple times a year and always works well. We use a old video camera with firewire but anything that you can input into you computer should work I.e a webcam etc here is my instructions using VLC player: [VLCStreaming To stream video from a camcorder over the network do the following after plugging the camera in to the computer via firewire cable Open up VLC player on the computer you want to stream from and click Media and then Steaming... Along the top choose Capture Device and make sure the capture mode says DirectShow. Choose Stream at the bottom This will then bring up a new window called Stream Output, choose Next In the destinations choose a new destination and choose HTTP and then click add, click next and then stream to finish. This is it you are now streaming the output from the camera. You now need to open this up on another computer (it can be more than one computer the more computers the more likely for network strain) To open the stream open VLC Media player go to Media, Open Network Stream in the protocol box choose HTTP and in the address put in either the IP or DNS name in place and make sure you include the port used in the streaming capture which by default is 8080 so for example computername:8080 A few seconds later the stream will open the audio will be fuzzy if the camera does not support stereo recording. In VLC player go to Audio, Audio Channels and choose Left. Job Done Hope this helps

I started using Cameyo back in late 2010 when I saw this post http://www.edugeek.net/forums/thin-client-virtual-machines/61620-cameyo-like-vmwares-thinapp-but-completely-free.html I have used it to virtualise a lot of software from back in the XP or even as earlier back as NT days that people insist they still use/need. Anyway it has been great and works on Windows 7 32bit fine. It is only in the last few months when I have been testing Windows 8.1 when I thought I would see if there is a new version of Cameyo out to use with it. When I go onto their website now I find that they have now started charging for the latest version if you are using the apps on more than 50 computers. Well this is fine and sometimes it is the way when things start out free but then go onto being paid for but what annoys me is that after some digging I found out on their blog that they insist that it has always had a limit of 50 computers Now that 2.5 is out | Cameyo Blog "We’ve also released a commercial offering for enterprises & developers who need more than 49 machines (some of you didn’t realize it, but the Cameyo license has always been free but limited to 49 machines). " Now when I looked at this back in 2010 I am sure it was free to use and distribute freely and I was convinced I read otherwise. So off I went on a mission and found this page Cameyo which clearly states: "Installation and Use: You may install and use an unlimited number of copies of the Software. Any copies of the Software which this License authorizes you to make are subject to this EULA. Reproduction and Distribution: You may freely reproduce and distribute copies of the Software. Reselling the Software or integrating it into another software requires written consent by CYO. The CYO opening splash screens should never be tampered or removed.” Can a company retrospectively go back and change the license? Just a warning to anyone using Cameyo, I’m not planning to pay for the new version especially after they have done this, does anyone else use Cameyo what do they think? Cheers

Not sure its possible. To be honest if they have jailbroken their iPad they could have easily removed Meraki. We use Meraki and it will inform us if someone has removed it by going into settings profiles but if you do a wipe then jailbrake I don't think it can pick up the fact Meraki is no longer on the said device. One of the many joys of iPads i'm afraid o I love ipads.

When I got a quote it seemed pretty expensive, sorry Smoothwall love the filtering BTW but I think the Spam stuff was more expensive than the filtering for us. To save the school some pennies I am trying to achieve the following... turn off the monitors, put them in standby when no one is logged onto a computer after 5 minutes or so. We have Impero but it only has the option of turning of the monitors after so many minutes regardless if a user is logged on or not. Does anyone know a way of achieving this? I have played around with Power Options in Windows for a while and with registry keys but the settings seem to apply for the whole computer instead of just the logon screen which is a pain. Seeing that you have HP and 3COM switches I would use HP's very good management and monitoring software IMC. You can download a free 60 day trial and if you whack it on a VM it should only take 30 minutes or so to setup from scratch. It will show you the load of all your switches, draw you a pretty network diagram which can be helpful, show you any config problems and should help you identify any network slowness if that is the problem. https://ssl.www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/imc-60-day-free-trial/registration.html Cheers

Back to the topic though just looked this printer up and it seems very good for the price, roughly £119 ex vat and cheap consumables too roughly £14 for compatible and £22 for original 2000 page (5%) cartridges. Shame that @MrLudwig rates the photo quality badly, but then again it still might do for a standard ICT suite printer, maybe not just for the Art department what do you think? Also free 3 year warranty at the minute too if you register online EPSON 3 YEAR EXTENDED WARRANTY Cheers

I hope it is not the Xerox Colourcube 8570 or the older 8560 or if it is you have a decent warranty with them. We had about 25 in total and I think we are down to the last few now. They all seem to last over 12 months then fail anytime upto 3-4 years is our record. They seem to suffer from power supply faults and colour bleeding into wrong print heads. Shame really as when they work they are amazing printers, fast, good quality and cheap to run. Only downside I've heard when they work is you can't laminate the print outs but that's not a big problem really. Now gone to the Kyocera FS-C5250DN colour laser. At least they come with a 3 year warranty. Don't think they will be as cheap to run and they certainly are not as fast but time will tell if these are a winner.

@Nick_Parker thanks for the update please let us know how you get on. We have 10 of these switches on site, the problem only occurs once a month of so but it can cause real issues when it does happen. How often does this occur for you generally?

Thanks everyone for your help yesterday I think it is now sorted. I ran wireshark on one of these computers yesterday while it was switched off and saw tons of ARP packets coming from our NAS box (Qnap Ts-1079 Pro 10) to the machine. I thought it was a bit strange so rebooted the NAS on a whim and last night no machines switched on by themselves. Either the problem was related to the NAS or it randomly went away. Still very strange but if its sorted I don't care too much :-) Cheers

@Marches I will check the Bios again it just seems strange this has only become a problem over the last two weeks @tekins No impero has stayed on the same VM with same IP address for a few years now but thanks for the suggestion keep them coming

@Marches when you say you turned off WOL do you mean within side Windows? and impero still wakes the machines up ok?

@LukeC really good thought we do use Spiceworks just for the ticketing system and have updated it recently. I have just checked though and in Inventory it is set to Scanning Disabled. Still the random not turning on from Standby exists though

@Achandler I am already using a WOL sniffer named (Wake On Lan Monitor) which detects the packets impero is sending out but never detects any further packets throughout the day. Yes it is the same machines that turn on. Also if it was a true WOL packet then the machines turn on from Standby also I think. @Marches thanks but we do need WOL to be enabled as we do use it to turn machines on in the morning. Hardware is all different as well but mainly Asus motherboards. The main thing that stumps me here is it must be network related but why not wake from standby only shutdown. Time to run wireshark I think that should be fun.

We use Impero to wake all machines using WOL in the morning which works well but over the last two weeks when machines are shutdown at the end of the day they randomly turn themselves back on usually within 20 minutes. It is quite a strange problem and still appears even when the Impero server is shutdown so there must be some kind of network chatter somewhere that is causing this. What is even stranger though is if the machines are set to standby (sleep) then they do not wake up. In the past I have had it the other way around if pattern match was enabled but never this before. Does anyone have any ideas short of going around and resetting every switch to stop this issue? If the network cable is not attached to a computer then they will not wake but if the cable is attached and the machine is off (not in standby) then they do wake up. I have checked things like scheduled tasks not causing the PC’s to wake up and also checked things like pattern match is disabled but what I don’t get if it is WOL then why do they not switch back on if in Standby as Impero still wakes them ok in the morning without any issues. The other thing is it is not all machines it is around 10% of computers and it is not just one hardware type either. All running Windows 7 if that helps. Any suggestions anyone? Thanks

O dear that's a real shame I was really hoping they may have fixed it. @glennda I appreciated these switches are not expensive high end switches but believe me I have Netgear switches that were far cheaper in fact completely unmanaged switches that were like £10 and they never have had this issue. Has anyone contacted HP over this so far? Cheers

Further to my last post I thought I would have one more look on HP's website and they have released a new firmware recently on the 09-Jan-2014 version PK.1.18. Has anyone tried this I know I will be tomorrow!
