iPad 2's you having a laugh! I have had mine for two years now and since the upgrade to iOS7 it has slowed down so much and constantly crashes I hardly use it anymore. I think its Apple's secret way of making you think you need a new one, No thanks I'll wait for the new Nexus 10.

I would do roughly the following. Login to Smoothwall go to Guardian, Policy Objects, User Defined. Go to Manage category content create a new one called Apple Updates. Add the appropriate URLs and IP's of all of the Apple Stuff apple.com, meraki.com, meraki.cisco.com, ios.meraki.com would be a good start but get a new up-to-date list from their websites and then save this list. Then go to Web Proxy, Exceptions and then find this list in the category groups and add it to the exceptions. This way anything in that list would bypass the SSL login and go straight through to the internet. If you have any issues you can check the smoothwall logs for any addresses not caught in the list and add them where appropriate.

Or another way which would achieve what you want but keep the SSL login is to add all of the Apple URL's and IP's, as well as Meraki's (which I'm sure you can find with a bit of Googling) to the proxy exception list in Smoothwall so that all Apple traffic including updates won't require authentication and should just go through ok.

The teachers here are required to sign in and out the iPads and write an individuals name to check for any damage etc so it is up to them to put Timmy's name next to which iPad he took and that way we can say well it wasn't Jenny that went on the norty website. Not ideal I know but then nor are the iPad's as they are finding out. Question I got yesterday is in Popplet and Pixntell both apps that don't support the Open In button to save to SkyDrive how do we save to Skydrive? Welcome to the nightmare that is Apple and education. We use Meraki and Smoothwall together and the best way was to setup all the iPads to ident by location rather than get indivduals to logon via SSL or NTLM.

Sorry I thought the student advantage was the same thing as Office 365.

The way I check (I don't know how accurate this is mind you though) is to login to Office 365 admin go to Admin, SharePoint click on user profiles and then it says number of user profiles which I believe is the number of users that have logged on. So far out of 2800 users we have 50 so I don't look often as it took me about a week to set it up 100% but o well at least we provide the service.

Had a couple of Ubiquity M5's on site since September to provide a link to a PE hut. Cost about £125 for two with everything you need in the box and then a couple of cheap satellite mounting kits from CPC for about £5 Since September the link has been 100% no dropouts or reboots and we get about 7-8MB/s over the link. Seeing we have had extreme wind, rain etc I think the only other test is snow but it is proving to be a winner.

We have AirServer installed in around 50 classrooms and also across VLAN's using Multi-VLAN Airplay with Avahi... | Technology, Music and Everything Else... but I would say I doubt we ever have all 50 using it at anyone time. Because of this I choose to make sure it is not running unless the teacher opens it from the start menu. Also remember for 100 users to be using it at one time you are going to need a decent wireless system as at the end of the day all it is doing is streaming uncompressed video over the network so could use anything up to 3MB/s per user in theory.

Depending on your usage Ovivo can work out good value. Like you my £8 a month T-Mobile contract has just ended and I've gone with the £0 a month SIM from Ovivo. They give you 200 mins, 300 texts and 500MB of data a month so as long as your a low user you could save around £100 a year. SIM card cost me £20 but will get £15 credit if I go over my allowance.

Excellent question @gshaw thought I'd reply to bump this thread as we would also love to achieve what you are trying. We seem to be hearing the same question often now which is I have dropbox, gdrive, box or SkyDrive all with 4+ GB's of storage my memory stick holds x amount of GB's why do you restrict my "My Documents" to 1GB? Where as we know enterprise storage (SANs etc) is relatively expensive still for schools if I could give them some cloud storage for other files that had a decent sync/upload tool that would be amazing. Found this on a Microsoft forum regarding disabling Newsfeeds and it does work for me also. Login to Office 365 go to Software and download sharepoint designer log into your mysites url via sharepoint designer. url would be something like https://yourorgname-my.sharepoint.com go to "All Files from navigation pane to the left make a copy of "default.aspx" as a backup (do this to be safe) copy contents of "Person.aspx" to clipboard edit original "default.aspx", highlight all, delete, paste in contents of "Person.aspx" save Now when anyone clicks "Newsfeed" it will simply take them to their profile page. Not perfect but it gets the desired result of keeping students from playing in the newsfeed.

Yea in my opinion the software is written really badly in terms of getting it working on a network and to be fair I only installed it under the local administrator account to humour the support guy on the phone thinking no way could this make a difference but to be fair to him it did. I also just found my notes regarding the case: Install Quark only under local administrator account not domain user Give everyone full permissions on these folders: 1. Administrator\AppData\Local\Quark 2. ProgramData\Quark 3. Program Files\Quark Hope this helps

Had a lot of trouble with Quark 7 on Windows 7 32bit spent hours on the phone trying to resolve, I do remember that we got it partially working only with one error on exit if it was installed under the local administrator account on the PC rather than domain user or admin which was out of the question weird I know but might be worth a try.

Thanks to a big helping hand from @Boredguy I now have a powershell script that will login automatically, search for users with the word Student in the "Department" AD field and then allocate them the A2 Student licence and the Office Professional Plus for Students license. Yea this is what I have been working from but just can't get the syntax working, just thought some school must have done this already and wouldn't mind sharing, I can't believe anyone did it manually?

DirSync is great and in total including Server setup this was a few hours work but the real fun comes after when you have to then allocate your users a particular license in Office 365 admin portal. This is the stage I'm at now. So I have imported 2300 students using DirSync and all is working fine including the password sync which I thought was going to be the hard bit but now Microsoft thinks its acceptable for me to select 20 users at a time and then click edit and then select the right license then repeat. Really 20 users where is the select all or select all by filter? That's just the students then I have a couple hundred staff to do. I have heard it might be possible to do this via powershell but have not found one example I can amend for education licences or get working. Surely someone has a answer for this and please don't say ADFS Cheers

Well in some respects I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue it's now going to be the first brave sole who waits for the issue to present and then gets in contact with Microsoft when's it's not working who is going to win this battle. Main problem is who can afford to do this when a restart solves it and ringing Microsoft and getting any useful helps takes an age in my experience anyway.

Non dfs simple file share here, simple permissions and file resource manager but nothing fancy.

Yes same here, I haven't got any 2012 R2 servers setup yet.
