Hello Geoff, was this for me?. If so I'm looking for something to identify whats plugged into each switch for me as i have a few random ports aroudn the school. The switches are all hp 2626.

if you update the drivers on the server they should update on the clients. Might be worth seeing if the failing machines have different drivers to the others?

sorry to hijack a thread. Everytime i use one of these programs it gives me a flat map and doesn't show me which devices are plugged into which switches. Could this be because my switches are on a different subnet to everything else?

When i tried this i found that a lot of laptops couldn't see channel 13

we have a raid 5 array on a spare server holding our asr and ntbackup's. This is also backed upto a usb. Our 2 main DC's are backed upto tape daily and taken offsite weekly (8 tapes).

Hello all, just looking for a little information 1. do you have a helpdesk? 2. how do you priotirise the workload?, do you take corridor requests/scraps of paper/laptops left on your desk? 3. how fast do you resolve things? 4. who monitors your performance? 5. do you ever supply self help answers rather than jsut doing the job for the teacher 6. how do students interact with the helpdesk? 7. what is your school policy on requesting help? does it all have to be via helpdesk, how do you deal with people that refuse to play ball?

hello fella, hope you had a good xmas. I failed 291 this week!. i've found the startmenu can be delayed if a link doens't exist, we for instance had a link to a random computer with a program on it, when we disconnected it the startmenu took ages to load.

double the ram in those and they'll be fine, i've found that 512 with sp2 is a little low and with sp3 coming soon its probably worth the £25 per machine it'll cost.

the important thing that really ages computers is the software. So as soon as your software starts to be a problem you'll need to change your hardware, in a smaller school you need to be aware that a new computer suite may not work with the software you have and a new OS will definately kill off some of your older software.

togo into a little more depth about ap channels. Althought there are 11 channels (13 on some) There are only 3 that truely dont overlap, 1, 6 and 11. You will also find that if you set the ap to have 13 channels that some clients simply wont pick up the signal past 11.

mirroring will have both disks the same all the time, so the only thing it does is protect you from hardware failure (even then it ins't fool proof, i've had power surges take out both hdd's)

are you using an administrator account?

4 access points in science block? large wad of money on it being overlapping channels on your waps. download netstumbler onto a laptop and move around the school, if you can see more and 3 access points at any time you definately have signal overlap. think of it like tv channels, if you have 3 signals on one channel it wont work.

create a webpage with a link to the intranet on it, create a website contraining that page, set the website properties so it can only be accessed by the people you want it too, then make an a record pointing to the website. and hope no ones using an external dns server!.

i like the format of the testout stuff, with videos, demonstations, notes, and then sims. I think if people are able to create topics with all the above being open to them (maybe not sims!) then they'll be able to create great topics.

I dont know about locations, but i've noticed a lot of them are right next to train stations. So its possible to goto one far away relatively easily!.
