hello!. I've decieded my laptop is too slow to run windows so i've been twiddling with ubuntu. on my work pc i have all the virtual machines i could ever need and i'd like to use those on my laptop with ubuntu. Can anyone point in the direct of the relevant software and if possible an idiots quide on how to use it.

unfortuantely this wasn't the problem that was affecting us, were showing the same symptoms as KB75811 but the best advice so far has been restore a backup which is something were not keen to do as we will lose a days input into sims.

its a really great program when you get into it, its only £40 per admin so its not too expensive.

vnc scan will also remove it at will for you . Its useful for providing remote support as you can preview all teh screens at once and it has a facility to see whos logged onto which machine.

bozteck. http://www.vncscan.com/ deploys various different styles of vnc on command and can send wol automatically. Ironincally you can use it to run a script on as many machines as you like remotely!

quite happy to see the ads to be honest, i've found some decent suppliers via the ads.

best bet is that the harddrive is corrupt. try running a chkdsk on it.

The virtual hard drive is just a normal file, mount the hdd in a virtual machine and your away!. Have a little look around here for the concepts of a virtual machine, then the setup is very very easy!.

cant say i do, but it might be worth running wsus as a virtual server or on an old desktop if you've got one spare.

have you tried deleting the mapping at the begining of the script before you map it?. If it sees the letter assigned it wont map but will look to the naked eye like it has.

theyre a mob based in reading, they do west-berks lea's website and vle's. It is basically just a geocities esque production. I'd not like to see it used in any school that has dedicated tech support. Much better product for a school with no dedicated support however. moodle is a much better route and easier to maintain too

They are super useful guides, theres a website that does a similar thing too. Just one little bit about deploying office.. make sure the help works once u've deployed it!. It didn't for me

Your set up will only be as fast as your weakest point, if all your switches cables and your core are set for 1gb and your server NIC is set for 100mbs then the fastest that will any computer will receive comms from your server is 100mbs.

And does the sick pay policy cover being shot?

i'll give it a go, but I was looking over the shoulder of a much more experienced tech at the time!. We had problems getting it to recognise the drive was there, the bios saw it, windows saw it, but backup exec couldn't see it. we ended up uninstalling the new drive and the second drive and reinstalling. Then we decieded to recreate the backup jobs just to make sure. I remember the other tech saying that is was usually a lot smoother than that but it still wasn't that tricky.

dezt, might be worth getting 2 servers so you have some rudundcy. Best suggestion is get 2 of the servers ict-direct are doing. You'll also need to get some serious backup sorted out, as if your hdd fails in a server you might stand to lose upto 4 servers!.

no , the virtual machines each take a share of the host computer be it hard drive space, ram, or processor. Whats good about virtual machines is how independent the services become from the hardware. So for isnance if you had 2 servers now and one went down u'd be stuck, with virtual machines you'd move the file to another server, fire it up and your server would be ready to go.

and if your looking to disable the power button it might be easier to yoink the cables from the mobo rather than physically fix it on the front.
