Yes the licencing on AB Tutor is very good no student licences. A few schools round here use it and they love it. Got RM Tutor here and don't see the point of upgrading it yet. Butuz

Even worse was the fact a wheel fell off a car later on as a reminder of last week. I think there are going to be some rule changes maybe I think I may agree with them for once! - risking other poeples lives by desperatly trying to drive your car around the track in order to get back to the pits simply to try and get a few points or stay in the race is dangerous and I think it needs to be clamped down on maybe. Yes they are super expensive because they only sell about 10 per year. Thin client adoption is not high in the fat client world - it is miniscule in the laptop world. But hey - if you buy 'em now - that will help drive prices down for us! Butuz

Yep I am really pleased with the performance results on NFS. My VMs should be happy! I am using ESXi 4 too which apparently has quite a bit of iSCSI improvement compared to ESXi 3.5. Will deffo do some quick tests with trunking to see if it makes any difference to the results. Butuz

Well guys I managed to finally get round to doing some NFS v iSCSI performance testing on my 7110s as I was interested that people had noted poor iSCSI performance and wanted to see if I could replicate this. Both my 7110s have been upgraded to the latest firmware (2009-04-10-3-0-1-1-16). All performance testing was done with the following networking conditions: Test VM - Windows 2003 Server with 4 x 3.16Ghz vCPU and 4GB vRAM SANs - both of them only had a single 1GB link configured (no trunking etc) ESX host was a SUn X4150 and had a single 1GB link configured to the SAN and local storage was 2 x 146GB SAS drives in Raid 1 No live VM's running - i.e purely a test spec setup. Control Test: Local Storage configured as RAID1 Total I/O Per Second: 208.45 Total MBs per Second: 2.14 Average Response: 4.7968 Maximum Response: 114.6618 CPU Utilisation: 0.74% SAN-001 - Configured as Double Parity Raid (Raid 6). 1.4TB Usable SAN-001 NFS v3: Total I/O Per Second: 348.52 Total MBs per Second: 3.51 Average Response: 2.8685 Maximum Response: 1750.4661 CPU Utilisation: 0.89% SAN-001 iSCSI: Total I/O Per Second: 173.92 Total MBs per Second: 1.90 Average Response: 5.7491 Maximum Response: 2734.5700 CPU Utilisation: 0.66% SAN-002 - Configured as Mirrored (Raid 10?) 0.8TB Usable SAN-002 NFS v3: Total I/O Per Second: 508.82 Total MBs per Second: 5.73 Average Response: 1.9668 Maximum Response: 1198.8586 CPU Utilisation: 1.33% SAN-002 iSCSI: Total I/O Per Second: 201.25 Total MBs per Second: 2.26 Average Response: 5.0480 Maximum Response: 260.3086 CPU Utilisation: 0.66% As you can see iSCSI performance on the 7110 is shocking. I will be doing these test again soon with 4x1GB trunked links to see if that helps iSCSI perfromance along. I have my doubts! Will deffo be using NFS for my ESXi Host's VM storage. Butuz

Will be setting up a new sims virtual machine here later on in the year. Planned spec will be: Win2003 Std 4GB vRAM 2 vCPU 3.16ghz iSCSI SAN storage Though in light of above I may well swap to Win2003 Enterprise with 8GB vRAM instead. Reason I am saying 2003 is LEA dont support 2008 yet. My upgrade may end up co-enciding with the LEA upgrading to 2008 though. Have to wait and see. Whatever I end up doing - it's gonna be a hell of a lot better than the 5 year old Single Xeon 2.4, 4GB Ram IBM thing thats running it at the mo! Butuz

Fair play credit where credit is due. Ordered a fair bit off Simon now and he has always bent over backwards to get me the best prices on the kit I need. I do seem to have a nack of finding almost unbeatable prices already - and I think Simon probably does an inside sigh every time I grab him - but still CP are willing to negotiate and more often than not beat my best price, if not, they get darn close and with free delivery it's deffo worth using CP Ltd rather than ordering from some random company that happens to be a few quid cheaper. All the stuff has come very well packaged and promptly. Cant ask for more! Butuz

So far - no one has noticed that last night I virtualised a terminal server onto my VMWare test setup. It all seems to be working swimmingly! From a Dual 3.5 Gig 4GB RAM 1u pizza box onto a virtual 4 x 3.15 gig 4GB RAM VM Not under heavy use today - hence the 4% average CPU usage. I wanted to check that the actual conversion works nice, which it does, and that there was not any unusual behaviour. So far so good! Will be converting two more terminal servers on thursday night to do some testing next week! Vmware Vsphere Convertor is a work of genius! Butuz
