Blimey that's a bit early for my liking!! I rolled out of my hotel room at about 11.45 Just got back home now - I am absoloutely creme crackered. The M6/M5 was a horrid horrid road, multiple accidents on both sides and lots of rubbernecking. Only good thing was that I had an escort from 2 fire engines at one point which sliced through the traffic quite nicely. . The edugeek conference was fantastic!!!!!! Gonna have a nice nap now because I am falling asleep! Butuz

Just to say I used CP Ltd for the first time to order some HP Procurve and APC UPS equipment and Simon was very good, undercut my regular suppliers prices, and delivery was super fast! Will be using CP again! Butuz

The driver is usually more than just one file? What happened when you did press F6 and point it to the floppy disk - did it come up with the Make and Model of Raid controller and prompt you to accept? Butuz

Sounds to me like you need to download the drivers for the particular RAID controller and do the old Press F6 right at the very beginning of windows setup to manually load the Raid driver into Windows 2003. Butuz

True - but to be honest I doubt there are that many secondary schools only using SIMS on a handful of copmputers nowadays. We used to run sims on 11 PC's, now it's 100. And one thing those graphs do not show is the increased reliability of SAS drives compared to SATA. Just my 2p, but I don't use SATA drives in any of my servers. Butuz

It may seem good on paper but I can't see how it could ever actually work in real life. The problem is, the pupils need to be given ownership of the laptops (by ownership I mean they are theirs to take home etc), but pupils nowadays are not really interested in taking ownership of anything at all, many of them can barely manage ownership of a £5 calulator, let alone a £300+ laptop. I mean we all know we have enough problems trying to get the teachers to take ownership and look after their laptops - what hope have the pupils got exactly? Saturating the school with PCs is a hell of a lot more viable than saturating the kids with laptops, that's for sure. Butuz

This is exactly why I believe that access to all school data from outside school should be provided by secure encrypted Terminal Services etc. Data always stays in school, in the server room, It can be viewed and edited, but can't be copied onto whatever client is being used to view the terminal session (thin client, fat client in school, PC at home, laptop on train, etc). 7200RPM SATA is not faster than 10/15k SAS in database I/O which is basically what SIMS is. I'd go for SAS every time. Have a look at the graphs below. With both SAS and SATA the number of drives is king. So go for 8 x 73GB drives rather than 3 x 400GB drives. Also - Read performance on SAS drives is far superior to SATA, whilst write performance is not quite so clear cut. Processing capacity of Quad core Xeons is massive compared to non Core Xeons. I agree though it may not be the processor you need to upgrade, RAM looks to be the first priority (look to 4GB) and Storage the second priority (willing to wager it has slow IDE/SATA hard drives possibly not even in Raid), third priority is Gigabit network card. Really, as you may need to upgrade three of the four core components of the existing server, you would be better off buying a new quad core server with 10,000rpm SAS drives in Raid 5, and then you shoudl also end up with 3 years warranty on it too! Never found the RM CC3 build process to be a problem to be honest, it's unnatended, takes less than 2 hours and can build 60 workstations at a time. Does the job here! No doubting there are better methods out there - but I am not a big fan of reinventing the wheel Butuz
