Oh right - you move out of schools and now all of a sudden you need an all singing and dancing I7!!!! In all seriousness, I7s have a big price premium. Yes they perform, but is it worth the cost? If your gonna be running VMs - I would suggest a HP ML115 G5 server from Servers Plus add some extra RAM and you have a seriously good 4 x 2.1Ghz Core 8GB Ram server to run VmWare ESXI on for about £200. Then spend £400 on a Quad Core SCL workstation and hey presto - all you need for £600. My 2p Butuz

Yes better to seperate them with vlans. If you just reply on subnetting and you make a mistake with the subnet masks you could potentially reveal all your storage by accident to the rest of the network. Butuz

Yep they're a good intermediate step but Dell don't actually supply them. I take it the OP wants a pre-built server with no fiddling required. They supply powerful PSUs because the server is Dual CPU capable and can take 6 Hard drives of up to 15K SAS - this will use 400+watts at full tilt so having 580w is a good idea! Butuz

I would get rid of the 160GB 7200RPM SATA drives and use 73GB 10,000RPM SAS drives (or 15,000 if you can stretch the budget). Other than that - looks fine! Butuz

Also look at The Cutter Project. Very good educationally focused company using Sun Ray thin client technologies. They would be my choice if i was not sticking with CC3 for a while longer. Also - where are you looking to use thin clients - and what kind of software are you going to be running on the thin clients? Butuz

Using roaming profiles here on 100 thin clients with 1000+ users and it works fine. Why are you under the impression roaming profiles "won't work" with thin clients? it works in exactly the same way as on normal XP fat clients. Butuz

Just would like to post up a big thanks to ServersPlus. Few weeks ago ordered a HP ML115 G5 on special offer to test out and got very fast delivery. Then asked for some extra RAM for it and got that next day too! Yesterday afternoon I ordered 20 more ML115 G5 and got them all today before dinnertime!!! :hat: Awesome delivery!!! Very quick at getting back to your questions etc - and very quick to keep me updated on delivery times etc. Can’t fault them. Butuz

I've got the opposite - during the day power sags to well under 220v some times as low as 210v. We also used to have quite alot of power cuts so I've overspecced the UPSs somewhat. We've got over 15 mins runtime on everything now. The APC UPSs are doing a sterling job tbh! Butuz

Here are our electricity costs per pc per year based on a school average on and off peak usage pattern and current off and on peak electricity costs. £21.09/year - Dell Optiplex GX520 P4 3.00Ghz PC £19.62/year - RM Core2 Quad 2.66 PC £8.16/year - RM EcoQuiet Atom PC £4.12/year - HP T5135 Thin Client £1.51/year - Axel M70w / Sun Ray II Thin Client Also for VDU devices: £16.14/year - 17" CRT £6.35/year - 19" TFT So - moving from an ICT suite of 30 x older Dell P4 workstation and 17" CRT to a Atom PC with 19" TFT's will save you £681.60 per year just in electricity. If you factor in electricity costs over 3 / 5 years then it becomes idiotic not to go with atom if you do not require massive processing power. Butuz

Know exactly how you feel mate! Last two years we have only had £5k per year to spend on IT so to finally get the go ahead from SMT/Govenors to order the 7110s and Fire servers was like a breath of fresh air! Butuz

BSF aside - the article is right. All of the financial and auditing procedures that are there to make sure tax payers money is well spent actually ends up wasting far more money by forcing schools not to procure best value and also wasting countless hours of staff time. It not right that Schools themselves should be blamed though when it is the procedures they are forced to adhere to by LEAs etc that are actually wasting money. It's mostly LEAs that are actually wasting this tax payers money. E.g if a school wants to have a partition built in the office so many hoops are put in my place to jump through that the school ends up just having to use the LEA building team / LEA official contractors and this is what ensures schools do not get best value, as the services the LEA offer are generally way off best value and often actually below par.
