It sounds to me like one or more of the source videos has been moved / deleted? If you have say 5 source videos stored in My Documents that you've edited in Movie maker and then you delete/move one of them and then try and re save the movie again Movie Maker gets upset. Can you check if this is the case? Cheers Butuz

Use the Powerchute software and serial / usb cable and hook a PC /Server up to the UPS. Check the log files and look at the line voltages at the time the problem occured. This may give you more insight (i.e if the line voltage is very high). We have the opposite problem here - our line voltage is often very low. Sometimes in the morning it goes down to 204/205v and the UPSs all kick in to battery mode. Have an electrician coming in in Easter hols to balance the phases. Butuz

I have nothing but praise for Sun 7110s. Unfortunatly when I was shopping they only did 2tb ones, so I had to buy 2 of em! But now they do a 4.2tb version which should suit your needs to a tee (so long as you can skimp on that 0.8gb). They're ultra fast, ultra reliable (so far!) and ultra managable! VMWare ESX over NFS works a treat! Butuz

I think the moral of the story is - don't just blindly sign off/order quotes and assume they are/were correct. I am surprised at some peoples comments on here, particularly Grumbledook's! If I was grumbledook's network manager and he pulled me up as to why DVD writers were not fitted, and it transpired to be because I did not double check the quote was 100% correct - I would expect Grumbledook to pull me into his office and give me a right royal rollicking. I am actually quite shocked that Grumbledook is on here bad mouthing CP Ltd simply because the NM/techie involved did not double check his quote before ordering it!!!!! Butuz

You seem to be happy with using a Terminal Server and RDP for your workstations - if current performance is good (i.e. your server is happy) and all you are planning to do is move from OpenOffice to MS Office (this should improve performance as MS Office is faster than Open Office) then I would recommend you use "get rid of the middle man" (Atoms) and use zero/thin clients such as the Axel M80f. These can be set to boot from DHCP and immediately connect to your terminal server, thus eliminating the problems you have with users getting confused with RDP and local machine logons and also speeding up the whole process no end. The Axel M80f's can happily handle large screens, animated flash shockwave and youtube video etc. The question really is: Is your old(‘ish) terminal server going to be up to the job in a year or three's time, when you may have more apps installed, and more thin clients around the school? Hey it's a good point. My £681.60 per year saving was based on using Atom PC's as dekstops, so no thin client servers needed in that example. With our thin clients, based on our usage, and the fact our terminal servers are virtualised (which further reduces server costs) thin clients still work out significantly cheaper to a) buy and b) run than even the atom desktops and that's including the server costs and power consumption etc. When your moving from old P4 type fat clients with possibly CRT monitors, huge energy cost savings can be made by selecting newer, much more efficient equipment such as Atoms or thin clients. Is anyone here running 2003 / 2008 Terminal servers on CC£ that they have set up themselves? I.e Vanilla TS's as opposed to RM Client Connect? If so can you let me know I have some questions about what you did in the Active Directory Cheers Butuz

Yep they are amazing units. Currently I am running 3 x VM's on mine over NFS3 on a single Gigabit link. One terminal server serving 36 thin clients, and 2 low use web servers serving our sharepoint intranet, helpdesk and other random web based software. As linescanner says it is not even being tickled. Will soon be adding another Temrinal Server, a SIMS server, and a couple more low use web servers onto there. Over the next couple of months I hope to upgrade it with port trunking etc to give 3 (hopefully 4) gig links for each SAN and 2 (hopefully 3) gig links to each ESXi server. I am sooooo glad i went a totally different way to everyone else around here and gave Sun a try (thanks to linescanner!!). I won't buy anything other than SUN now - no need. Butuz

To be honest it is wise not to install any extra web apps or databases onto your CC3 Domain Controllers. For messing with web programs and helpdesks and intranets and anything else - Build up a Windows 2003 Std Member server based pon a HP ML115 or the like you should be able do the whole lot for £400 inc licence. As far as I understand - cloud symbol is not really megabusy it just means it is being used a bit. Are you running a database on there as you have quite high iops compared to your network usage? Here is mine Cheers Butuz

So is anyone elses air con not too happy with the loverly winter weather? Server room was hot this morning - Air con had gone in to de-ice mode and was actually blowing warm air! Erp! It's back to cool air now. I hope the temps dont drop too low again! Butuz
