Yes in my opinion. Even on my 2003 terminal servers the difference between weak thin clients such as HP T5135 and much more powerful thin clients such as Axel M80 is massive. E.g T1535 struggle with simple flash wheras M80's can play youtube vids. I'd love to try on 2008!!! Butuz

OK just going home now but used the VMKPING and can ping the SAN Network IP address of the 7110 but still cannot add it as an NFS Storage device Butuz

Here are my times. I did an initial run of SIMS and then closed it and did a subsequent run. As you can see once SIMS has been loaded into RAM on the end it is very very quick to open. (Workstation speed drastically affects SIMS start up times so what workstation are you running this on???) Admin Network: Initially 17 Seconds / subsequent runs 4.0 seconds (Core 2 Duo 2.66 / 2GB RAM/ 7200rpm) Curriculum Network: Initially 14.7 seconds / subsequent runs 4.0 seconds (Core 2 Quad 2.66 / 4GB RAM/ 10000rpm) It does sound like you have network / server issues. No I will try that now thanks for that suggestion DMcCoy. Still at a loss as to what's going on. Restored one of the SAN's to a previous good configuration from July and still have the same problem. I am learning towards the ESXi boxes now so am going to re-install the latest version of ESXi on one and see how it goes. Cheers Butuz

Dunno what's going on at the moment but my SAN connection between my ESXi 4 servers and my SUN 7110's seems to have gone mental!! Story is the week before last I had some time off and on the Thursday night we had a very short powercut in work but only in one building. It was during a nasty storm so could have been a lightning strike, either way it took the 16a breaker out of the air con system thus the server room overheated and most servers shut themselves down. I got in on Friday morning and got the air con back on made sure every server was shut down and let the room cool down. When I got it all back up and running my ESXi boxes could not see my SAN's. Now I have a SAN VLAN and bonded links into my Procurve core switch - just since that episode I can not get the ESXi boxes to see my 7110's no matter what. I've even tried pulling the entier SAN LAN off onto a seperate 8 port gigabit switch and still I can not add the NFS shares on to the ESXi boxes. If i plug a laptop into the SAN network I can ping all ESX and all 7110 boxes using their IP addresses. I've got round it by using the curriculum network link for NFS traffic but this is far from ideal. Carrying on troubleshooting but I just wanted to vent as this is so random It's been working solidly for a year and now just refuses to play ball even tho no settings have changed!!! Butuz

Just thought I would update this thread to say that I did get VLANS working in the end on my HP Procurve Kit mostly thanks to the info and links on this thread!!! I've gone for a relatively simple set up to start with. Split the network into three VLANS: 1. Curriculum (default vlan) 2. Admin (admin/sims network) 3. SAN (Sun Storage for VM's / virtualisation) Touch wood seems to be working good!! I am looking at expanding it further to have separate VLANs for our catering system and our teacher PCs but am not 100% sure about this as my core switch is only a Layer 2 not sure if I can get the required routing working on that switch. More research needed!! (or a HP Procurve course!!!) Butuz

Don't go by the RRP. Education gets big discounts. I am running 2 x 7110's here and I would not have been able to if it was not for the education discounts that linescanner on this forum got for me. Butuz

Your ultimate plan looks fine to me! UPS's and servers are front to back cooled and best practice is to leave no gaps at all as this maximises the front to back "tunnel" effect. As apaton rightly says many switches (particularly smaller 1/2u ones) are side to side cooled. As he says, either put them at the bottom, or purchase extra 240v fans to bolt onto the rear door at the top of the cab in order to make sure any stagnant hot air gets sucked out at the back. This works really well! Butuz

I've tried with VMWare converter and that works. I have also smart cliented a vanilla xp virtual machine and that works a treat too. I doubt you'll be able to get the full RM build process working using VMWare network drivers. Butuz
