You need to accurately work out how much power each laptop PSU actually uses. Reading the back of the PSU will not help as most of them do not make sense. E.g the 65w HP one I have here does not make any sense at all when you compare the input and output ratings. It states it's input to be 100 - 240v 1.6amp. Firstly that makes no sense as at 240v it will be using less amps than at 100v so how can it have a catch all rating?? Secondly at UK voltage, 240v*1.6a = 384 watts?? There is no way it uses that - it would actually catch fire if it did. Secondly it states it's output to be 18.5v @ 3.5 amp. This is correct as 18.5v*3.5a = 64.75watt. Realistically that laptop PSU should be no less than 60% efficient, so to output 64.75watts it should only be inputting no more than 100watts. 100w @ 240v = 0.4amps. This is the rating I would use whilst you plan how many adaptors you can fit into a 13a plug socket. In my case I would be happy to run 30 of these particular laptop adapters from a 13 amp socket. It would also be a good idea to use one of those cheap wattmeters to actually measure the definate input power ratings of your laptop chargers before you commit. Butuz

The following is fairly easy to understand. A Physical Server = An office. An Operating System Install = A Worker On a non virtualised system, you have your office, and in that office you can only install one worker. The chances are, your office is massive, it might even be a whole three story building, and your worker only uses one tiny corner of it. Thus you are wasting a large amount of money, buying an office, heating an office, lighting an office, paying the phone bill in an office, hiring a security guard for your office, etc, etc all to satisfy the needs of one worker. If you want a second worker, you have to buy a second office!! Ouch!!! Also imagine that the worker (o/s) is tied inextricably to the office. You can't easily move a worker between offices - they have their office and that is where they must stay. Now - imagine the virtualised set up thus: A physical server with virtualisation software = An Office A Virtual Server = A worker. This is where you can start to visualise your possible benefits and savings. Now we have our office and in it we can partition the office many times over, and in each partition we can fit one worker. We have instantly gone from being stuck with one worker in our three story office, to being able to fit say 30 workers into our office. Now, your seeing big cost savings in purchase cost and in running costs. Also - thanks to the magic of virtualisation software, if you have a new worker, you can fit them into an existing office rather than having to buy a new office. You can effectively, squish the other 30 worker's partitions closer in order to fit one more worker in. Easy. Also - you can move workers between offices at the click of the mouse. If one office has a problem (water leak) your workers can effectively drive to one of your other offices and carry on working with minimal disruption. Does that make sense?? I guess you can simplify the above analogy right down to basics, a couple of lines if you need to get it across to a totally IT illiterate person. Butuz

As it still gets hot without the side of the case fan I would rule out the case/psu fans and concentrate on the cpu heatsink and fan. Does the heatsink get hot? If the CPU really is at 70 degrees and you have good thermal transfer, then the heatsink should be too way hot to comfortably touch for longer than a few seconds. If the heatsink is not hot or only barely luke warm then you need to as difinity suggested and re-fit the heatsink with new thermal compound. Butuz

Well here my Admin Network is actually part of the LEA network so I am limited in what they will allow. Therefore we had to keep a separate admin and curriculum domain. However I have Virtualised both the Network Infrastructure (Procurve VLANs) and the Server Infrastructure (VMWare) for both curriculum and admin domains. This means I can keep both networks virtually separate (and keep the LEA Happy) whilst actually saving money by collapsing them both onto one physical network and server set up. Money is saved by: a) reducing the number of switches used (from 30 to 20) thus bringing replacement and electricity costs down b) reducing the number of servers used c) being able to tag any network drop as either admin or curriculum - whereas before with the physically separate infrastructures I often had to get new network runs put in just for admin drops so money saved there too. It works well. I can change any network drop in the school to curriculum or an admin and I can give any server admin or curriculum network access simply at a few clicks of the mouse. Ideally everything would be on one domain but with very tight security - but the LEA won't allow that. Butuz

Put it this way Keinoboy - HP units may be popular but popularity means nothing. I'd quite happily junk all my HP units if I could. Problem is, HP were the best value at the time.... the time, unfortunately was before I discovered Axel: 1) Cheaper to buy than HP 2) MUCH Faster to boot than HP 3) MUCH more powerful than HP 3) MUCH less nonsense to manage than HP 4) 1/3 of the electricity costs of HP. *sigh* Butuz

How long did it take you to move the server? Just wondering if the battery backup on the raid card ran out, so when you booted it it decided to initialise to be on the safe side? Just a guess. Butuz

Whatever you do don't use anything sharp to clean it off as even microscopic scratches will hurt the heat transfer performance. just use the removal and thermal paste products linked to above and you'll be fine! Butuz

You could add a file hash rule in your software restrictions settings for the EXE that the mem stick encryption uses. As long as the version of the EXE on all memory sticks is the same this should work. As long as the exe does not actually install anything on the PC you shouldn't need any privileged access rights for staff. Butuz
