Firslty don't worry about Exchange and RAID 5 it will eb fien for only 200 users, and lets be honest all 200 won't be on at once if your a 24/7 operation. One thign I will say to check before you go ahead is the processors in the DL380 servers, as you could have 2 x 4core (4 threads) or 2 x 4core(8 threads), the thread count becomes important as a thread can be a CPU when virtualised. So you could hyave 16 virtual CPUs or 8 virtual CPUs. I would be tempted to go for 24gb (if your RAM chips allow this) and 4 x 300GB drives in the HQ like you mention, as this is the primary server. Another suggestion would be maybe to use the Dell Server as well as a HyperV host, as you can then use this to run VMs from the backup should you lose your main host, obviously this would eb determined by the spec of the server.

DSapied You need to find out where your DC is getting its time from, if it is virtualised then it will probably be the host, but you can disable the time sync function. Then your dc will use your time server again and your host will use your dc and it will all go good. We had a situation once where all our servers seemed to be getting the time from any DC they saw fit, who were in turn getting them from host servers, until a big loop was formed and noone was getting the time from somewhere sensible, I soon broke up that little party though! About 10 servers and between them they couldn't even count!

Im assuming your doing this on a test switch, as you don't want to break a in use uplink. Though this would be pot calling the kettle black as when I setup mine I used our library for trial an error! Shoreham has HP switchs with Unifi though, so he can probably elaborate on how his VLANs are setup on them, personally I have done it on Netgear and D-Link

I did a a pretty diagram for itgeek yesterday that I can email later if needed, I might need to tweak it slightly. Basically your APs need to to be on switch ports that are untagged on the Default VLAN and Tagged on the second VLAN. All your uplinks need also ofcourse need to be untagged on default and tagged on the second VLAN. Your controller just need to be on the default VLAN, and the traffic on the second VLAN does ofcourse need an outlet, maybe a server providing DNS and DHCP (personally we use our Smoothwall box).

We have two SSIDs on our Unifi points, one on the Default VLAN and a second on VLAN (example). The setup on the points/ controller should be as simple as that. You then need to make sure your setup the VLANs on the switches correctly, we use Netgear and D-Link switches here and 1 HP switch (old one) and it all works fine. I guess your ports on your switches are the problem. Ona Netgear switch they are Tagged on in you second VLAN and then untagged on the Default VLAN.

I think your real question is, what do I get from EMBC and what do I need from them, once you have both lists you can workout whether it is worth it. As a school that used very little from our local authority, we left it because we paid the same as a school that used a lot but without the benefits. However schools that used a lot/ most of the services provided obviousily chose to stay, prefering to get a lot of services from one central location and having the local authority there to help should they need it. The extra factor to consider is, if you left what other schools in yoru area have left (if any), how do they operate and are they someone you can ask if you have a question? Where I am, several schools have left the authority but the IT staff within any school will happily help out any other school whether they are within the local authority services or not. If your local schools are like this then you have an extra safety net. Personally I only used the council helpdesk when there product was the problem, usually the central filtering box had died etc, so when we stopped using there filtering, I stopped contacting them, as we have to go direct to Capita for SIMS support etc.

If you want to use the "ink layer" ever, then just put something in the empty tray slot. If you don't want to use it ever then simply bluetack the sensor or you should be able to unplug the tray.

We have an implementation of 35 access points here, and an average of 300 devices on the Wifi (Staff and Guest), mostly ipod/ ipads and phones, so mainly web browsing and checking emails, but also laptops (on the network using AD credentials). I personally have found the system good, it does everything we need it to and some extra that we don't use., we have only once had a problem with the Wifi since we introduced it but restarting the controller software solved this, i must also add the system has vastly improved over the time we have had it. Initially the controller had to be run from a user account, now it can be run as a system service which shows active development and in the right directly. They are also planning new types of points. I do have two minor complaints about it though, although these are being addressed. Firstly the APs do not work with PoE switches unless you buy adapaters for them which add a cost of about £20 per AP should you want to use one. Secondly, if you don't use a PoE switch but instead use the inline PoE adapters provided, they come with European plugs, which is an annoyance.

i believe it is to do with the LUNS, two servers with iSCSI connectiosn to a SAN cannot see the same data and update it live, without a little bit of work. So I imagine this is the same sort of problem.

Use the trial Winhex to see if it opens, open it as a physical drive and not a normal drive, when you use WinHex you'll see what I mean. If it opens it ask ti to recover files (trial can only do small files, upto 256k) and see if it gets anything. if it does then buy WinHex for about £60, if it doesnt you haven't lost anything but now know about a wicked tool, it scans the drives at hex level, basically if it spins at all, you can get info off it.

Our kids play games every friday lunch time ina n IT suite, and I supervise them. We have several games they can play, all run from a network share and they have to use a special account that is disabled except in Games Club time. Edit: All the games they play are free to play, and have no blood or guts in them etc.

Depending on budget, as me and m25man always say. Always take a look at Ubiquiti Unifi, its cheap and I mean massivley cheaper then anyone else and it should do everything you require at a school.

You will not necessarily need to buy a new license from Capita, don't telling untrues on the forum creese. If your school has at any previous time had a SIMS license with your School name on it then you will not need to buy a new license. If your school has only every used SIMS as part of the LEA buying SIMS and the schools contributing then you will need to. We moved from our LEA this year (Feb) with regards to Internet and AV etc, we have been an academy since Sept 2010. Our Capita support was always provided by an external company. The first thing I will say is contact your LEA, ours didn't start charging academies more for any services they kept with them, we left simply because it was cheaper to leave. The process we went through was, 1) Establish what licenses we owned (including SIMS) in the school's name. We then had to look if we needed to buy anything, we luckily didn't some schools have had to. We host our own Exchange and Moodle already in house. 2) Contacted the LEA regarding our Internet feed and AV, this is all they provided that we used. We stayed with the LEA from September 2010 to February 2011 3) We decided to leave the LEA for services to, we moved our AV over first. Then our Internet feed. We could have stayed within the our LEA for both though. Ask your LEA what they will continue to provide (at a cost) if they will provide everything for a while then you have more time to leave if you should wish. It also depends entirely on how confident you are being responsible for everything, if you like the idea of having someone to ask for help e.g the LEA then consider this should you want to leave. I'm in an area where a lot of schools are acadamies, some are with the LEA for IT services, some aren't, some of the non-acadmies are with the LEA and others aren't.

Our ICT lessons are "Controlled" to an extent, the pupils login and get a different drive to their normal home drive during ther ICT periods. Meaning they can only access the work when they are meant to/ allowed to. This is achieved using a GPO that affects members of certains groups, this GPO has a variety of settings in and a script that runs and originated from someone elses post here. The students (in preset class groups) are then added and removed from the corresponding groups via a scheduled task at the correct times. Its like a controlled assessment but the light version.

We dont use originals in our HP or Oki printers, some are fussy some aren't it depends on the printer and the quality of the compatible
