We have Edexcel reporting a SSL Error, not the usual "Server Error" I've just done some digging and using IE9 and visiting https://a2c.pearson.com results in the problem with this certificate error.

I believe if the school owned laptop is primarily used for work purspoes then it should be covered by your school license, and lets face it it should be primarily used for school purposes. They is some nice grey area wording somewhere from Microsoft which makes it as clear as mud for you.

There are also schools that have goen from SIMS to Serco to Scholarpack. To say the school is considering alternatives to SIMS would be true, but how serious they are I don't know yet. I wanted to see Bromcom in action really, but don't fancy a 3 hour drive!

Indeed vikpaw, I did the same search as yourself and found it mentioned very little. I have contact details of two schools that do use it, which we are going to contact but I expect their views will be predominantly on how it works, I want to know if it always works and what bugs there are, as end users tend to "do it this way and it stops that happening".

I know all MIS have their quirks and problems, annoyances and bugs and even some useful features. However, I am wondering, does anyone use Bromcom as a full MIS? If so do you like it, in comparison to SIMS. I think that Bromcom have actually gone away and rewritten their program, something Capita can't/ won't do and as a result on paper (have only seen 2 modules) it looks much better, and has a better feel to it but then on paper I suspect SIMS looks good to. We have Bromcom coming in soon to show us their full MIS and wanted to know any thoughts first.

Ok. For Forefront you need to get the Enterprise Desktop CAL from what I remember reading, this same CAL does your SCCM for your desktops. About £40 per FTE. The servers then need a Management License each, they are about £50, This Management CAL includes the licenses to install, SCVMM and DPM but nothing else. To license other parts of SCCM you need to buyt them seperaely, although when SCCM 2012 is released this must be changing as that is 1 whole suite. My license for SCCM was something like £40. I'm not entirely sure if there is a small license fee for the Forefrotn Server or something as well as I don't use it., but it won't be much if there is.

Then I hope someone knows a tool that has a chance of fixing your registry as much as possible. Then long term you can move off the server, if you have a lot of problems though, a new server for yoru files will atleast relieve a lot of pressure from staff wanting access etc.

Step 1 take them off roaming profiles. Do you take backups that copy the permissions? The reason I ask is that if your registry is potential corrupt and this server is just a fiel server, then I would consider a complete reinstall and copy the files back across (if your backups keep your permissions)

You can remove read permissions to the spellcheck DLL if you are using exama ccounts, personally we use LibreOffice for students who arent allowed spellcheckers and remove all lniks to office files etc.

Oh well then yes, it would be way more expensive to get SCCM. We pay around £4k a year for everything.

I can't really see how Symantec is cheaper, but then I dont't have the full price worked otu for myself.

Then i shall tell you we are paying £54, So Symantec is charging you £10 per server for all there management stuff? As I am under the impression that that pack is needed per Server not per Employee. As your CALs for it are included within the Desktop Enterprise Pack.

Its not a problem. Your Main DC would be the new one, but I wouldn't demote your 2003R2 server yet. I would keep it running as a DC (once virtualised) but not the main DC; at least until you are sure everything is working and you are happy with it.

If you are using 1 server for everything which you are (not recommended) then running your DC as a VM or DC as a physical HyperV is neither here nor there. Microsoft recommend keeping 1 physical DC if you virtualise because shoudl your Hosts all go down then you still have DC and can login, also your hosts would fail without DNS if you were using Failover Cluster Manager. The main reason I would do it to the VM (not recommended) and not the host (also not recommended) would be I would have 2 DCS in the end, and I can backup the whole Virtual Machine easier then backing up a physical machine. It would also be easier in the future to delete this new DC should it be necessary, as you can demote it and remove it without effecting the physical host.

We have no aircraft carrier, and even if we did we don't have any planes to fly off it! Sorry been busy. Install 2008R2 to your micro server. Create a VM on your microserver, Server 2008R2. You now have 3 servers, a VM host, the old server and a new clean VM. Make the new VM a DC, using dcpromo, have this server takeover the FSMO roles, DNS and DHCP fro your 2003R2 server. We still have 3 servers, but now the main DC (along with DNS and DHCP) is virtual and is 2008R2. Now we do a physical to virtual convert on the 2003R2 server onto the host (microserver). So we end up with 3 Server still. The Mmcro server as a host, then 2 virtuals the a New main DC and the older 2003R2 server. You also have a spare phsyical box (the old 2003R2 server). I would now assume you are going to move the virtual server back from the micro server to the old physical box, once you ahve wiped it and installed HyperV etc on. We we end up with 3 servers still, 1 physical 2 virtual and you take your microserver home. Its liek that crossing the river with the corn, a chicken a hen and a fox!

Personally if you are intending to move to a 2008R2 DC then I would move the roles across because I converted. Do you only have 1 DC, if so i'm not sure if promoting the host to a DC is a good idea, as you want the hsot to do one thing. Have you considered making a new DC on the host, and having 2 DCs one new virtaul one and the older 2003 one, then move the roles etc and convert.

Yes you can take a physical 2003 Server, use the offline physical to virtual converter (I would), then you will end up with a virtual server you can run on any server with HyperV installed. I have done it before.
