Upgrade in stages (that's what I did at my old work). Remove all your plugins to and then upgrade the base system. I found it seemed to freeze but then about 10 minutes later it suddenly jumped forwards.

Honestly, from experience, keep asking questions. People will get annoyed at you probably but that doesn't mean it is the right thing to do. You will see loads of things where you think, why are we doing that like that... only one way to find out, ask. Also clarity with your line manager on anything they can help you with, for me for example, at my previous job, the summer was pretty much flexi time, whereas at my new position it isn't, you need to work one of two shifts over the holidays. Get the non-IT issues sorted first, the IT size of things will come to you in time as you bed in more and learn more about the network and how it is setup. Also document everything you discover when you discover it.

To be honest, it is a standard article. These articles always want a Win8 tablet must be able to run Photoshop, Office and eveything a PC can do but it needs to be cheap and light and have a super battery life. But Android tablets and iPads just need to run small apps and web browse... I don't understand why articles complain that an atom processor runs Photoshop slowly etc, when the other tablets that don't even run the program to start with. It isn't really a comparison is it.

Thinkiosk is free and runs over windows, it just replaces the windows explorer.exe shell with its own. Hence I asked what clients you were using, managing is GPO is also free ofcourse.

We put thinkiosk on our clients hen in that we put the auto launch for the RDP file, we also replaced the shell with thinkiosk as well. 10zig try and sell you a product that costs another £20 per machine, but thinkiosk was free. If you use it though, there is a tick box in the settings for RDS mode, which means it will launch and re-launch correctly. It can also be controlled via GPO which is a nice benefit. But basically in the end we had ones turn on and off at set times, and then when booted you were presented with a username and password box, you could then connect, if you disconnected or logged off, then the same connection box opened again. One reason we used WES clients was the ability to install local printers etc, as ours were for office use.

Apologies but you didnt actually ask anything except has anyone done it. To answer your question directly yes, and it worked well, and it was using 10zig WES clients. With regards to your problem, can your dumb terminals auto-launch an RDP file?

Who owns the folder it is in to begin with, such as there home drive. If the owner of their home drive folder, is the Administrators group, then new sub folders would also be owned by them.

My old work has 12 setup as Personal desktops but it did have pooled desktops before, it was using wes7 thin clients though, which aren't actually that thin.

Turn the computer off, then send a WOL packet to it and see if it turns on. Simple as that for me.

Opera Mini does the same thing, so watch out for that! With Opera Mini though, we blocked their server and it just broke Opera Mini.

We have 60 macs here, and they are fine. 30 of them are "wasted" in my opinion, being used for stuff any machine can do. The other 30 are being used for Garage Band, iMovie etc, they are all integrated into the network. The network here is .local though, and they are frankly garbage at logging in, it takes ages, and they have to be rebooted between logins for some reason. All stuff to look at for me during the summer. They do share the network storage though with no problems, they are controlled centrally as well, including the profiles etc without any problems, yes the Apple updates regularly break a few things, but usually this is easily fixed, Microsoft/ Windows does the same after all. Security issues, well most of our school has bars on the windows, the mac rooms have bars and then internal shutters, but in the past at a different work, we would put huge bolts through the base and the desk to make them extremely difficult to steal. Keyboards and mice are a problem, so the students can't change keys easily, well that means they just break the keys instead... we go through about 15 keyboards a year, and probably a similar amount of mice, this might be due to classroom management though? They are high demand items because they are shiny, nothing else. A mac holding it's value is hardly relevant to most schools, as we don't resell them anyway. On a personal note, I don't think they are worth the money at all, if it was a Windows PC versus a Mac at very similar costs, then sure but otherwise I don't think the premium is worth it unless you are going to make use of the Mac only software. Also remember Mac work on a shorter life cycle for software, usually you can get 3 OS upgrades then your hardware is no longer supported.

Windows Embedded thin clients would work, as you can install the interactive board drivers locally. Not sure about others though.

Although I have only a little experience with mac servers (only started using them in the last month) I can confirm that you can indeed set the proxy and have a different setting for different AD groups through the xserve/ mac server.

Check your error logs again, I have seen it refuse to create collections or even start the VMs before due to a permissions issue, so badly so that we had a schedule task to do a gpupdate /force every morning about 30 minutes before staff arrived. The above problem seems to be a known issue.

Personally I said spec the fibre for up to 10Gb as it will likely be used in 10-15 years, when things could have changed. His current plan for running at 1Gb only is fine.

In exchange could you not setup a overriding rule so that any emails to the distribution list "parents" gets automatically changed to be sent to original sender and bcc parents instead. It sounds entirely possible from my memory of Exchange 2010.

We always use to run at least double what we needed, because the extra cost versus time made no sense not to but then we are a secondary school. If we needed 4 we would run 8 and it has proved a good idea to because the amount of times I have used the extras has been countless.

If the run is as easy as you say then you can order pre-terminated fibre cables of a predefined length, which wouldn't cost as much. You can buy it at about 90p a metre (8 core OM3). You then need two fibre patch bays (about £30) each. Otherwise yes for that run you could use CAT5 cable and you should get a similar result, personally I would consider fibre though if the run is straight and easy, with not harsh corners.

Put high end fibre in,and then 8 cables. You could then trunk the ports (same as cat5) but if you put fibre capable of 10Gb in the future then you are future proofing as well.

Check the event logs for services not starting due to incorrect privileges. When I installed RDS I had a similar problem found that a service couldn't start due to the account it used being unable to start, which as a result meant the installation failed. Though I remember it failing before the automatic reboot.
