If the price has been artificially high for 10 years, all that will happen is the government will fine the companies some miniscule amount compared to the profits they will have made from it and tell them to stop being naughty. Then later that night they will all go for a knees up at some exclusive place that their friends int he oil companies pay for. Call me a cynic, but there will be no benefit to the man on the street at all. They aren't going to post us a refund.

The certificate warning is something I never sorted out because I didn't think it was that big of an issue, we taught our staff to accept the certificate. As for the single sign on, that should be a few tick boxes to get to work. The fix would explain it, the pool and the RDP file being created before the gateway meaning they didn't know about it and hence when recreated it does appear, my gateway was there from the start but for me the gateway was created early. I'm glad you have it solved except a couple of minor niggles that can be ironed out.

Interesting, so when you publish the standard app, it picks up the gateway but the remote app doesn't. That box your talking about is what I see. Which server is the standard app trying to connect to?

So basically from what I am reading the published RemoteApp (for RDPing) doesn't contain the gateway, and it needs to. When you click on the Remote Desktop in RemoteApp, what details does it give you, I have just checked on my session based server, and the remote app shows me the following: Publisher: *.mydomain.org.uk Type: Remote Desktop Connection Remote Computer: Myserver.domain.local Gateway server: ts.mydomain.org.uk == my external gateway server name Do you have the gateway in your server details? I don't know for sure but if I was connecting to my VDI Pool and not my Session Host, the only detail I would expect different would be the Remote Computer name.

I haven't been to Harrogate, so I can only tell you want our Head of IT reported. He said Harrogate was being done extremely well and they started with just teacher, he didn't like ESSA's approach, he thought Harrogate was more thorough. Whether it is the best approach is another question, I can only give feedback to the original question.

As I mentioned above, ESSA is underwhelming compared to Harrogate Grammar (been confirmed), though depends on your school which may be best. I would say it was even disappointing, iPads turning a school round is properly deceiving to. ESSA spend the equivalent to half out schools entire income on IT every year. If you spend literally 10s of millions on a new school, then spend millions more then most schools get every year on a school, the results should increase. Last time I went they had an external contractor for IT support which they didn't use, but was costing them £100k+ a year, this has now changed. But how can one school afford that?

There is a school in Harrogate doing 1:1 iPads, they are meant to be a really good place to visit, they held the conference recently. I would recommend them from what I have heard, our Head and Head of IT have been. ESSA academy is using them, but our Head of IT wasn't impressed at all, I have seen them with iPods and I thought it was wasted money.

Your RD web Access should be easy, as your server is told to publish the link to RDWebAccess, so it should be automatically configured correct. Try disabling the the published RDP file, then re-enabling it.

If you go to https://yourserver.domain.local/rdweb in Firefox, then when you click the RDP connection, it will download the RDP file because it can't launch it like IE can. If that file downloaded doesn't work then your issue is to do with your server/ vdi pool setup. The RDP file will also connect to the pool, and it will say it is connecting to the server, NOT an individual machine. The error to do with a computer not being registered with the session broker implies that the problem is down to how you originally setup your server and pool, when you are connecting to the server it seems there are no pooled VDIs to connect to, and you cannot connect to the VDI directly because the host isn't set up correctly to allow this (especially when using the gateway)

You shouldn't be connecting to an individual VDI but to the server hosting the VDIs, this server you then realise you don't have a /admin switch and redirect you to one of the pooled VMs, it acts as the session broker. If you download your working RDP file from RD WebAccess, then add the gateway to this, then it should work without changing anything else. But to connect to a pool of VDIs, it shouldn't be connecting to individual machines. Although you could make it, but then you would need lots of individual RDP files, which defeats the point of a pool, even a perosnalised pool using the same RDP file. Can you ping the gateway on the external address, although you should be able to use the gateway internally, just turn off bypass the gateway to force it to use it. The gateway may not work if you aren't connecting to the server though (as I queried above)

I don't actually have my VDI pool available online, but you should use it. Try using a pre-configured RDP file from home, so one that has your gateway preconfigured and check that works. Once you know that works for sure you can start checking the RDWeb one, personally I email staff the RDP file that connects to our session host server.

have you set up a gateway server? if you are connecting over the Internet i would. I believe it is either VDI pool or RemoteApps you server cannot provide both, as RemoteApps is done using a session host.

You need to use the /admin switch when logging in to the server. This will log you in properly. That pool on the RDWeb access should be all VDI computers.

This debate has moved to far from the original one. As now products from different price points are being compared, afterall switch costs go from a few pounds for an unmanaged fesktop switch to 10s of thousands for top end data centre equipment. In reality when you budget for the switch you compare at your price point and make the decision, and depending on what the switch is for helps makes a decision as to which one to buy as well. Different places put different thrings through the switches, as shown above, a lot of schools have only data with multiple VLANs, others have everything. Most medium to high end switches have decent OSs on them for debugging, when you move to the fully managed from "smart" switches, they might not be the best, and there is probably less perr support but then their in the argument of which OS is best in multiple aspects of IT. We are also all trying to second guess the future, whether we will need extra features of better switches, how many extra ports to get in place. Is it better to get the 1gb HP Procurve or better to get a 1Gb Netgear with 10Gb uplinks? All are questions that need answering when we buy a switch. It also depends on what is already in place, if you have 95% HP Procurve then you would probably not put one odd one out switch in place.

Unifi here, we have had them longer then most people have, put our first in during 2010, and covered the school in 2011. We have about 500 users on ours points across the school.

Interesting, we have setup a few trials of this type of thing but for nearly free, that's even better. I think I will give it a go next week, I'll have my technician start it tomorrow and see then i'll let you know if we did it and how successful we were.
