  1. I guess many of us will be going back tomorrow (4/1) so what do we all have in store for the first week back? With any luck the final bits of our VDI kit will be arriving so that will be getting put together – also its going to be time to start looking at putting some of our ‘internal’ web services onto the actual web.
  2. You shouldn't have any problems in that case - one of the best things you can do with any Virtulised setup is activate the copy of Windows and then take a snapshot the moment after - that way all you do is roll back to that snapshot anytime you need and you won't need to reactivate again.
  3. Got to be my first Car - Ford 2009 style Ka
  4. Its asking to reactivate because you have (I presume) cloned a existing Windows PC and then moved into a virtual machine - because of this Windows has detected that it is running in new hardware and so by default will require a quick reactivation. If you do ever come across a activation problem (Windows XP/7) just call the number that comes up on the screen and have a quick chat with the Microsoft guys and they will set it straight. Only word of caution - if you have VMed a PC and try to reactivate it using a OEM licence (e.g. a sticky label that was put on the side of the PC by HP/Dell/Whoever) then by making it a VM you may well be in violation of the software licensing for that copy of Windows (this is why Microsoft came up with a new type of Licence for Win 7 VMs).
  5. We are getting one of these for our IT Club/6th form work - it uses a simlar processor to my laptop (Athlon Neo 1.6ghz Dual Core) and its more than enough to handle running multiple VMs in Virtual Box and Hyper-V.
  6. Merry Christmas to all on here! Been a fantastic year of new IT Developments at work (VMs being the main bit) and although I can't wait to get back to find our shiny new Thin Client setup delivered I think the Christmas holiday is well needed!
  7. Ultimate praticly is Enterprise edition - like someone has already said its only realy ideal for Notebook if you need BitLocker unless you want the features like Federated Search and Branch Cachce (full run down at this link). As were under a schools agreement we do run all our Windows 7 PCs with Enterprise but thats only to keep images down to a min.
  8. This may help you- IAS Log Viewer - DeepSoftware.com Works with Server 2k8 NPS and helped us to find the problem with our authenticated Wireless.
  9. Have a look at task manager and see how much of your CPU is being used - personaly I think you 7,200 rpm HDDs are going to be the biggest issues and not the CPU. Maybe its time to consider 3-4 10,000rpm (or if you can afford it 15,000rpm) drives.
  10. SharePoint foundtation 2010?
  11. You need to setup WPA2-Enterprise with and make one of your DCs a RADIUS server - theres a few guides here on here if you run a quick search.
  12. Could always just try installing it on a testing server (if you have some spare RAM in your PC run it inside virtual box) and just have a go with the trial version before comitting.
  13. Sorry wasn't expecting Virtual PC to be used in such a way. You can still use it to create differancing images, heres a quick guide I found at the top of Google that could help solve your storage problems- Creating Differencing Disks with Microsoft Virtual PC
  14. If your not using Hyper-V/Citrix XenServer/VMware what are you using to run your Virtual Machines?
  15. If you are running Hyper-V you could create a 'golden' image of whatever OS your students PCs are running then sysprep and attach differancing images to that - you could cut your disk space requirements down to much less than what you are asking for there. (XenServer and VMWare does this to)
  16. Although I can't say for sure (no longer at a RM school) I don't see any reason why System Centre (I'd assume you are thinking of using config manager) shouldn't work. You could use it to deploy Windows XP images but then you would have to SmartClient them after however.
  17. Is the sound device showing up as installed in device manager?
  18. If its Windows XP you could try a repair install? (wouldn't destory your data just fixes certain parts of Windows) If not what is the error message (if any) that you get on screen?
  19. 3 so far all saying thanks for all your help with IT over the last year - I think the NM got a bottle of wine from someone to.
  20. Are your time zones setup correctly? While it would be a weird error if the time zone is out (because of the regional options being out) it should affect user logins (although it should stop them compleately). Also if the server is a DC it wouldn't be getting group policy from default domain top level but from the domain controlers policy (look for its OU in group policy management).
  21. Maybe a chance to make the entrance into thin client technology? We are getting a similar setup to what you are describing in our Library using Kaviza VDI. Thin clients are tiny and sit on the back on the monitors – easy to move around if needed in the future and keeps the whole place clean and tidy. If your SMT are intrusted in it you could label it a ‘Green IT Investment’.
  22. Reason why out Thin Client setup is running Citrix XenServer at the moment - although when we make the push into Windows 7 (already on staff notebooks and admin PCs) for our desktops were going to change over to a pure Hyper-V enviroment.
  23. You should't have to many problems then even with Windows XP - we have a simlar setup for our digital signage and haven't had any problems.
  24. Are you looking for a all in one PC or something thats energy efficant?
