  1. A bit of a longer term thing to look into however VDI maybe an option, most setups have the ablity to restore a image back to its golden state the moment the user loggs off.
  2. No one has noticed that this thread is from 2007 then......
  3. Hi all, I've just inherited a Moodle install which is taking an age (~6-7s at quiet times and ~11s at peak times) to display the front page and general page navigation is slow (over the LAN and Remotely). My intent is to put in place the APC cache to get things running faster, as it turns out the previous chap had put most of the settings in however it doesn't appear to be working. Key details are- Server 2008 Standard 32bit 8 Cores of CPU and 4GB RAM (pretty low utalisation at about 2GB however we will be bumping this up over the easter holiday) SAN storage (no bottleneck there) WAMP Server 2.2 (going to look into changing this to IIS over the summer) Apache 2.2.11 PHP 5.3.13 MySQL 5.1.36 Moodle 2.2.4 ~3,000 users site wide with an unkown number using the site at any given time (probably no more than 200) I can see in the Apache logs PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library 'C:\\wamp\\bin\\php\\php5.3.13\\ext\\php_apc.dll' - The specified module could not be found.\r\n in Unknown on line 0 However all other extensions are loading fine. Got about an hour this afternoon where I can bring the server up/down with no issues so does anyone have any thoughts on what to try? Before anyone asks - Yes I have rebooted the server, yes I have rebooted the web services, yes I don't like WAMP but can't change it right now. Thanks to anyone who helps out James
  4. Can you get the LGFL mail up and running with the Outlook client? If so then the Outlook calendar printing assistant is pretty good however a even better thing to do would be to work out ways to not need to print off calendars (encourage use of smartphones for staff etc).
  5. Any kind of Firewall on the AP? Most modern bis class ones have the feature built in as do some of the better home models. Can you also access other resources from the 2nd PC (that you can't RDP into) e.g. file shares/printers?
  6. Exchange 2010, Henley - works verrry nice
  7. We used to have a TS-212 for use with Windows Server Backup (poor mans DPM ) and we just had it setup all as one single virtual disk and then iSCSI into that from the DPM server. Performance was good enough just make sure you run your backups at times that won't hamper normal network traffic.
  8. When it comes to Office/IWB software you would feel the speed of a hard drive swap out with SSD more than you would with a CPU change.
  9. Sorry back on topic Great successes with RDS at my old place as well, I've got a series of posts/videos about the setup on my blog - Series: Custom RemoteFX RDS Farm « my world of IT
  10. There has to be a hypervisor in there somewhere to host the virtual machines? Even the VDI-in-a-Box software is just a Virtual Machine. Either way a good place to check is making sure that power saving modes are turned off in the BIOS and in the OS. Are you hosting the VMs on HDD or SSD as well?
  11. Intresting are you running it on Hyper-V by chance?
  12. Whats the issue with your VDI in a box setup? When I was at my last place we had it setup and running with no ill effects.
  13. For publishing of secure internal sites you can use Forefront UAG - its based upon TMG but Microsoft have said they will continue providing updates to it (as they just have done with Windows 8 support). For firewall/web filter/NAT I was looking at the Meraki line of appliances
  14. If you have a server of any kind that will take WDS I would just set that up and roll out your images from that and save bodge jobbing together something of your own design. It could certainly help prevent any issues that may crop up in the future from misconfiguration now.
  15. The only thing that brought us to thinking it was a faulty NIC was when we did a large sequential file transfer into the server - outbound it worked perfect every time, inbound we would start to see excessive packet loss.
  16. Ages ago we had a problem with our Lync 2010 (SIP and VoIP) where incoming calls would drop every now and again - turned out the issue was a combination of a faulty NIC in the virtual host that was running it as well as the power saving mode was turned on the power features on the virtual host server. Fixed both of those and we haven't had a dropped call in months.
  17. We've got a mix of Sony and Axis cameras here (tending towards the Sony ones these days as they seem to have a better image quality). Milestone Xprotect express for the recoarding server, something we custom built with a 2U case from Xcase and a AMD mobo/CPU. Origionaly we went for 2TB HDDs but after consideration we changed our length of recoarding down to 30 days so most of that is unused now and I kind of wish I went for smaller higher speed 10k hard drives.
  18. Sorry I wasn't clear You need... IP Address 1 (192.168.2.2) - SSL Cert 1 - NAT to external IP 1 IP Address 2 (192.168.2.3) - SSL Cert 2 - NAT to external IP 2 So different IPs per IIS site are needed unless you have a multi domain cert or wildcard cert.
  19. That's the one - although the SSL certs should have the host names in already which IIS will pickup. Then in your DNS point the address to the IP that you have assigned the site to.
  20. You will need to either get another NIC in your server (so one SSL cert per NIC and IP address) or get a multi domain/wildcard cert
  21. OneNote and the Modern UI RDP application on my Surface RT - anything that I don't have I can always get to by RDPing into my desktop back at the office
  22. That is one of the highest speed SSDs in the background though
  23. No clue but its working great here - Custom RemoteFX RDS Farm
  24. We've got a App-V management server which hosts a UNC share with the packages - the appropriate packages/applications are assigned to the user upon login (pretty much cuts out the need for a managed start menu). Do give it a look - there are educational discounts and its a whole lot cheaper than running something like XenDesktop or VMware View although you still have to pay for enough hardware to host the virtual desktops it will create.
