Network Monitoring Software
SpuffMonkey replied to mcnallyfc's topic in Network and Classroom Management
I pay Cutter Project to sort our Nagios/Cacti box out - they're good chaps if you've some spare budget. -
Yeah - they are lovely quality - being so big - but my Dad was in the Merchant Navy for quite a while and theres a limit to the number of pictures of 1950's Cape Town, Singapore, Hong Kong, Aden, Dar es Salaam harbours & beaches that I can stay focussed for...

Sucks air through teeth noisily "That'll be yer dilithium crystals mate, it'll cost yer"

Best of luck with that - you're lucky you've 35mm slides - they are easier to deal with - I've recently done 100s of my Dad's slides - which 2.25 in square - I couldn't find any automated system for them and had to do them individually - *sigh*

We've just converted and gone with Resource 32000 from Corero - its a nice product

If you tell us which format you require - it would be helpful. SUPER can do most things, Format Factory, avidemux, etc -
No world cup for England... I blame the BBC personally!
SpuffMonkey replied to GREED's topic in General Chat
It seems odd that people seem surprised that a patently corrupt body (FIFA) award something to a patently corrupt country (Russia - see the wikileak stuff for confirmation of that) - if you want to be in the game - you've got to play it - either bribe them more - or jump sideways and set up a clean alternative. Its like the problems that arise when we find out that our defence/engineering firms bung countries backhanders to get massive contracts - wise up - its the way of the world - a few million buys a few billion & keeps people in work here. -
Good grief - is that a serious recipe? I would've thought it would be too thick to drink and clarty to boot??

Its the old Flexibility/Reliability/Cost triangle - you can have any 2 of the 3 - let them have whatever they want - but it'll either cost a lot to support properly, or become unreliable

Not free - but have a look at AB Tutor - its a lovely bit of software - and you only pay for the control stations - not the clients -
MagicInfo screens... worth the extra money?
SpuffMonkey replied to gshaw's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
We have MagicInfo and are just in the process of installing Xibo - as MI is complete pants. Now - just got to find a decent replacement to handle 3x2 video wall we've got - then we'll be free of that Samsung rubbish - anyone used an Eyefinity card with 6 outputs - was wondering if that would do the job - tied to a little PC. -
How to punish Proxy Bypassers?
SpuffMonkey replied to adamtate's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
We drop them to an "educational only" whitelisted filter - so they can get to specified educational sites - but not to most stuff. -
I'm sure I read that the net effect over the last 10 years was a loss after taking into account sorting out the mess they made... Personally I can't see why there should be any bonuses until all the money that bailed them out has been repaid - given the bonus pots in the big banks are 7-10 billion - I can't see that this would be too terrible.
-
We use iSpring to convert to flash and embed that. The MagicInfo software is truly a pile of poo and we're just about to install Xibo which should give us a lot more flexibility and improved scheduling.

Comapre thin computing suppliers
SpuffMonkey replied to johno's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Hi Johno If you are really struggling - I'd strongly suggest you talk to a firm that can do all this stuff for you. We've used Dataspire Dataspire: Innovative IT solutions provider to public and private sector organisations across the UK. here in the past - and have always found them helpful. You're welcome to come over and see our setup if you need. -
The tax system explained using a beer analogy:-
SpuffMonkey replied to laserblazer's topic in General Chat
I suppose the alternative view would be that they all get charged £10 from the start, but the poorest 5 can't afford to drink and die from dehydration, just to put more of a left wing swing on the analogy. -
