    Xandros ISO help

Xandros no longer offer a free version as far as I know - haven't for a while... $39.99 for the home version and they have a 30 day trial on their website (although the licence does say you can install it on as many 'non-commercial' computers as you like - within your home!). A mix of OSS and paid for components = very confusing IMHO
  2. If anyone is interested, apparently there is a deal to be had at the moment... if you buy VMWare Foundation edition before the 21st May, you will get a free upgrade to VSphere Standard after it's released (under the support and subscription contract). This is because there will be no more foundation edition under vsphere. Get onto your reseller quick if you're interested... I reckon it works out at about half price the price (so circa £3k instead of £6k+).
  3. Congratulations to you both...
  4. Does it play nice with Vista too? Dare I say it, but I'm thinking of moving that way later this year...
  5. Nah, mine's straight...
  6. That's good to hear - I have FOG virtual appliance downloaded and ready to install at half term...
  7. Also, Sonic do a plug in for Photo Story 3 so you can burn the slideshows to DVD for $19.99 Home User > Products > Sonic DVD for Photo Story 3 Makes it even easier for teachers
  8. Faster - but then I have gone from the 32bit beta to 64bit RC so I'd expect it to be really! So far all good, just needed to download a dev build of Chrome to get it running but it may be obsolete for me anyway as IE8 64bit seems very quick and so far very stable too.
  9. Cool - thanks guys... Lot's of upset teachers and I can look all innocent and say sorry, not our problem!
  10. The OCR site appears to have been down all morning - can someone confirm it's happening for them too please? http://www.ocr.org.uk Thanks...
  11. Have you looked at Photostory? Microsoft Photo Story 3 for Windows: make show-n-tell cool again
  12. We have done this with 2 Windows Server 2008 TS boxes and have had no problems. Even though it's not 'officially supported', as long as you have decent hardware specs I don't see why not.
  13. Ahhh look, it has a 'continuous supply' thing going already!
  14. Oh no, I have Swine Flu! Somebody call a Hambulance
  15. Lenovo or HP here... we've tried everything but always come back to those two.
  16. What about using 'User Config - Prefs - Control Panel Settings - Printers' to deploy them instead. It works really well and you can choose to set as default as well. Only thing is you need the client side extensions on the clients, but that's easy if you have WSUS. Particularly nice is the item-level targeting in it. If you want more info, just ask... I could probably run off a quick how-to as I've just changed over to this last week...
  17. Done. C'mon EG - we want St George...
  18. Not independent schools though...
  19. Quote: "Places are free for teachers, local authority staff and those presenting." So not for support staff then? You know, like network managers whose job it is to decide on solutions for their school?!
  20. Judging by the skinheads I knew back then - yes!!
  21. Short for 'Skinheads' - there were a lot of them about then....
  22. You can use NTFSFix from Wisesoft: http://www.wisesoft.co.uk/software/ntfsfix/default.aspx. Excellent tool and free too - just remember it needs to run on the server itself...
  23. How about Bournemouth for VMWare? Only a couple of hours and you could have an ice cream on the beach while you're here!
  24. Most are sold on the basis of a 'core' package that holds all your student data which covers day to day administrative use. You can then add to this by buying extra modules, for example, reporting or sports management (as you mention). Why it would be seen as expensive to a burser is that say for example your MIS doesn't offer a particular module that you'd like (eg. sports!) but another one does - then your school would have to ditch the existing system and spend quite a lot (time and money) on replacing it from scratch. In your position it would be best to get others on board by showing them the features that iSAMs has that your existing solution doesn't. Organise a demo and invite key people along - particularly your network manager! I won't post costs here as they are protected by a privacy clause in the quotes, but suffice to say we are soon to be moving from PASS to iSAMs ourselves...
