  1. I have to agree - It's the sort of position an experienced NM may be interested in, but I'm not looking to relocate and take a pay drop. £42k would be a reasonable start for that sort of responsibility.
  2. Check out csnewmedia CS New Media Web Hosting - UK Based Web Hosting, Reseller Hosting, VPS & Dedicated Servers. We've hosted with them for nearly two years now and not only are their prices good, but Carl's support is amongst the best I've had...
  3. Be Open Source?
  4. If I remember correctly you don't need it at all if you've got 2k8 or Vista/7 machines as they can pull all the info from XP/2003 machines. I've certainly used Vista to migrate printers from retired XP machines to new XP machines without putting anything extra on the client...
  5. All passed away now, but we've had Honey* (Hampster), Pamplemousse, Kisses* and Hearts* (All Guinea Pigs)... That blows the demonic theory out of water heh? * Explanation: I have two daughters - maybe if I had boys they'd have been called Hacker, Slasher, Maniac and Dexter?!
  6. mochasoft do remote desktop lite and network ping lite (ping, ping subnet, traceroute and telnet) which are both free and good apps...
  7. Nice indeed - you might want to change the favicon to your crest instead of the default joomla one sometime...
  8. We also went live in September... i) None at all ii) Half a day general training - more for admin users on 1 to 1 basis and more for specific tasks like registration, but it is very intuitive iii) No, it's nice and simple iv) Data conversion was a fair amount of work but iSAMS support and assistance was excellent v) No delays - we were ahead of schedule by a week or so vi) Been excellent so far vii) No issues I have had experience of 3 or 4 other MIS systems and iSAMS would be my choice by miles. It is a remarkably good system and we are very glad we went with it.
  9. No, you don't need it if you have the client side extensions installed... Just deploy the printer under User Configuration-Preferences-Control Panel Settings-Printers Don't forget to use item level targeting (under the common tab) to point printers at specific OUs... Works a treat! *Edit - assuming Server 2008 GPOs *Edit again - the difference between the two is that deploying under preferences gives you the option to set a printer as a default and the item level targeting is available. Don't forget you'll need to set loopback processing for this GPO.
  10. Xerox 8860 - we just bought two... they are expensive at £1700, but ongoing print costs are very low and judging by my previous Xerox hardware they should last a fair while. Have a look at Colour Laser Printers, Printers - Printware lists most current printers and gives costs per page too...
  11. Hi Nick, We have some mounted on the Acer V173 which looks identical. The only problem with vesa mounting them is that they have the ability to slide up and down and do so too easily, so if you push a usb stick into them, they slide down the mount at the back - not the end of the world, but an annoying 'design feature' none the less. We might have to bodge them with some super glue or something so they stay still!
  12. Nice one Mr & Mrs Contink - congratulations

  15. We use Policy Patrol here too, but there is an open source version of mailwasher server that is pretty good too MailWasher Server Open Source Site
  16. I'm no Apple fanboy, but I love my iPhone - can highly recommend it...
  17. Putting aside your insults for a moment - So you want us to all dump our existing systems and come to your company to switch us over to FOSS, paying through the nose to do so eh? Hmmm, let me think about that.... ...no thanks - cheers anyway. And you'd like the government to sack us all and employ companies like yourselves to run ICT in schools instead because that would be cheaper of course Does your MD know you're trolling forums and bringing your company into disrepute? No? Thought not

    Atom PCs with XP Pro

The Revo's run XP Pro with no problems - see my post on the other thread about these... http://www.edugeek.net/forums/hardware/38047-anyone-using-atom-powered-desktops-2.html
  20. We just deployed 75 Acer Revo R3600's over the summer, replacing nearly a third of our desktops... had to go XP on them in the end, as we just didn't have enough time to complete testing of all our apps on W7. Apart from one DOA and some teething troubles with getting the image just right, they have all deployed and work like a charm. They were replacing 3 year old desktops and thin clients and performance for general Office/Web and even some photoshop elements work is fine. The Nvidia Ion really shines on multimedia with full screen streaming video not being a problem. We are also deploying them as digital signage clients using Xibo. We got the 1Gb RAM and were going to upgrade them to 2Gb, but having seen them in action there isn't much need to at the moment - we'll get to it later this year some time... Hope that helps anyone thinking of using them - any specific q's - fire away....
  21. We moved our FOG server from Virtual to Physical (as the good people at FOG recommend) and did notice an increase in speed - 50% or so faster IIRC... Our base 10Gb image takes less than 10 minutes now... Gig backbone with 10/100 to desks...

  23. Thanks Gibbo - we found those links but they're aren't much help - I certainly don't think my user has been using the program it refers to... as I said she was just expecting to see her files and folders (normal school and personal stuff) on there... I asked her if she'd encrypted the contents of the stick and just got a very blank look - I don't think she even knows what encryption is!
  24. Had a girl bring a memory stick in (Kingston Data Traveller 8Gb) which shows just two files on it - DVREM000.epm and DVREM001.epm. One is just over 4Gb and one just under, with 900Kb spare on the drive. Now this girl's first language is not English, but she was just expecting to see her files and folders on the stick... My guess was that it has been encrypted but I'm not having any joy finding out how it might have happened. She has a Futjitsu laptop, but that's about all I know... We're scratching our heads on this one - anyone have any ideas? TIA...
