OS is Debian Squeeze. Pretty much a default "desktop"-style installation with gnome and such. Out of the box, it successfully auto-mounts drives that I plug in via USB in /media/{UUID} or /media/{Volume name} (depending on if the drive has a volume name or not, I guess). I am very happy with that system and I want to keep it. My only complaint is the permissions. An NTFS filesystem gets mounted drwx------ (with owner and group as my regular user, not root). I want drwxr-xr-x. I've been trying to find out how it works, or how to adjust it. udev notifies udisks and gnome-disk-utility or something like that, I'm not 100% sure and I can't find anywhere to configure a default umask/fmask/dmask for it. Looking in /var/log/ at the time a drive was connected I can find ntfs-3g's entries in daemon.log and syslog telling me what options were passed to it but I can't see what called it. Does anyone know how it works or how I can adjust the default permissions provided by the existing automatic mounting system? I don't want to replace the system with another, I don't want to put stuff in fstab, etc...I want to learn how the existing system works.

I've got Debian 5.0 installed on a server. In gnome when i go on the network option in the menu when it opens i get a unsupported platform message and it allows me to choose which distro im using. If i pick Debian 5.0 (Lenny) it opens fine and allows me to change the network settings nicely so any ideas about this? And also every time it gets shutdown the dns servers seems to get emptied so theres nothing in /etc/resolv.conf or in the dns section of the network applet. This started happening since i apt-get dist-upgraded from Debian 4. I'd reinstall but the server doesnt have a cd drive(i dont have a scsi cd drive ), cant boot from network and cant boot from usb. Thanks Jack

Help! any Moodlers, MySQL experts out there? Running Moodle 2.6 on Linux debian as a virtual machine on VMware. Yesterday morning got a database error when browsing to Moodle and took the following steps: Rebooted the server and fsck kicked in, took an absolute age to complete the check but then booted ok except failed to run the MySQL service. Logged in and ran df -h command which showed no free space on the disk. 1.4T disk but the previous nights full backup had only been around 500GB? Used FTP client to access and browse the folder structure, found and deleted lots of old moodle sql backups freeing up about 100Gb. Restarted mySQL and all was good for about four hours, successive df -h commands showed that the free space was diminishing rapidly Looked for advice online which suggested it could be a process running on a deleted file, ran lsof | grep "deleted" but didn't find anything. Did a disk clean up to make a bit more space, apt-get clean. Now going to increase the size of the vm disk but this may be futile as I think the disk space will be swallowed up by whatever the underlying cause is. Has anyone come across this or similar? Thanks

Hello, Dont know if anybody can help me, but im looking for anybody who can explain the download and installation process for Xandros. I have been searching for the .ISO file in order to create the installation CD but can not find a suitable download mirror anywhere. The only download files i seem to be able to find are torrent files, which obviously are not suitable. Thanks in advance! Tom

Getting stuck with pillars and formulas. Debian stable installed. Trying to configure dhcpd and bind, salt '*' pillar.items shows the server can see the pillar items, and state.highstate installs the packages, but they're not configured, any ideas? git cloned the dhcpd and bind formulas from https://github.com/saltstack-formulas copied the pillar.example files to /srv/pillar/dhcpd/init.sls etc /etc/salt/master: file_roots: base: - /srv/salt - /srv/formulas/bind-formula - /srv/formulas/dhcpd-formula pillar_roots: base: - /srv/pillar salt/top.sls: base: '*': - screen 'server2.school.local': - bind - dhcpd pillar/top.sls: base: 'server2.school.local': - bind - dhcpd pillar/dhcpd/init.sls: dhcpd: domain_name: linux.school.local domain_name_servers: - 192.168.0.2 - 8.8.8.8 default_lease_time: 600 max_lease_time: 7200 log_facility: local7 subnets: 192.168.0.0: comment: | This declaration allows BOOTP clients to get dynamic addresses, which we don't really recommend. netmask: 255.255.255.0 dynamic_bootp: True range: - 192.168.0.40 - 192.168.0.199 routers: 192.168.0.1 salt '*' pillar.items: server2.school.local: ---------- dhcpd: ---------- default_lease_time: 600 domain_name: linux.school.local domain_name_servers: - 192.168.0.2 - 8.8.8.8 log_facility: local7 max_lease_time: 7200 subnets: ---------- 192.168.0.0: ---------- comment: This declaration allows BOOTP clients to get dynamic addresses, which we don't really recommend. dynamic_bootp: True netmask: 255.255.255.0 range: - 192.168.0.40 - 192.168.0.199 routers: 192.168.0.1 So it seems that the client, (which is the same machine as the master btw) can see the pillar items fine. And it installs screen, bind, dhcpd, all the dependencies, and tries to start dhcpd, which fails as it has no config salt-call -l debug state.highstate 2> pillardebug grep pillar pillardebug [DEBUG ] LazyLoaded pillar.get is the only line, read through it all, can't see anything that stands out. Same happened with trying to configure bind.

I would like to use Debian netinst (more specifically, kmuto's remaster of Lenny netinst) as the basis of a system recovery partition but I would very much like to automate to install process so that all I would have to do eventually is just boot it of a CD or USB and everything (the base system at least) would all be installed with no manual intervention. Debians solution to this is called pre-seeding but I'm not having any luck configuring it. Before I go remastering the netinst CD I want to have a preseed file working that is loaded off USB at boot with a standard (kmuto) netinst CD. The idea is that I would install windows and then leave 20GB or so unused space on the drive which the Debian installer would auto-partition into one big / partition or one big / and a swap as big as the RAM if Debian insists on having a swap partition (which I think it does). This Debian install doesn't require any net access or access to the repos. If anyone has successfully pre-seeded Debian netinst, please can you share your preseed config file and I'm also not entirely sure I'm passing the right arguments at boot to load the preseed file as I've read different examples of how it should be called. Here's my preseed file as it stands (albeit with most of the comments removed so I could post it here), which I'm trying to load by appending: file=/hd-media/preseed.cfg To the kernel boot args on the Debian netinst with this preseed.cfg located in the root of my flash drive as a unix formatted text file. Debian loads the kernel but before it starts booting the kernel I just get this on my screen: (process:1472): INFO: kdb-mode: setting console mode to Unicode (UTF-8) d-i debian-installer/locale string GB # Keyboard selection. #d-i console-tools/archs select at d-i console-keymaps-at/keymap select uk # Example for a different keyboard architecture #d-i console-keymaps-usb/keymap select mac-usb-us ### Network configuration # netcfg will choose an interface that has link if possible.
