Apprenticeship is the way to go. It's nice to see lots of other people started the same way I did. I got an apprenticeship at my old school after leaving college, experience is key obviously but any qualifications you can get are going to help you get your foot in the door. Volunteering is also a good idea, it shows you've got a keen interest and I'm sure there are plenty of schools in your local area that would be glad of the help. Keep an eye on the jobs board of this site, I regularly see adverts for apprentice technicians. Best of luck!

Surprised the hard drive is still 500gb considering the size of these downloads, especially if that's what they're trying to push. What's the betting they have an "elite" version in the pipeline already?

Does anyone know of any good battery monitor software for laptops? Ideally that displays battery life details on screen. We have some RM lapotps that have RMBatMon which displays an onscreen traffic light (green for good battery, amber for less than an hour and red for low battery). This software will only work on RM laptops and we now have some HPs. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The point I was trying to make is, where is the incentive to raise your earnings when you can live more comfortably on lower income. I'm not making snap judgements, I was referring to people I know personally.

It really isn't a minority and it is frustrating. Certainly in the area I live, I see these people with 3/4 kids living in a council house that would cost upwards of £300k and they're renting it for the price of a studio flat. The kids have a blackberry/iphone/expensive clothes and there's a massive 60inch flat screen in the living room with sky. Me and my Mrs cant even get a mortgage for anything with more than 1 bedroom, the thought of having a house and family seems completely unachievable. I don't know anyone my age with a house that hasn't had help from their parents, something that I'm not going to get. I can only see it getting worse and more people ending up living off benefits and living above their means.

We have a set up similar to what you want, but everyone connects to the same SSID. Using smoothwall as our proxy, we have a transparent proxy with basic student filtering so anyone that connects to the WiFi goes through this filtering. If they want a higher level of access they need to enter the proxy server setting on their device (we share these with staff) and then point to the authenticated proxy port where they must authenticate with their AD credentials. This is a bit of a pain on some devices (apple) because it constantly asks to authenticate. Any laptops that are on the domain have their proxy settings set through GPO.

Is it sad that i took a half day? ha! Postman better not let me down or i'll look very silly!!

Not gonna get much better advice than that.

If the laptop is set to automatically detect it will work fine when they go home. We use a WPAD file, although using a transparent proxy is even better for students as they don't need to authenticate.

I wouldn't let a student login to the server. Most restrictions can be done from the server, although they are more difficult to lock down than windows PCs.

I don't think there is any way. I'm pretty sure you have to use a card.
