Sorry to Necro an old thread, but was there a 'Smoothwall' sanctioned method to get Puffin Academy running on iPads? Maths dept. want to use Mangahigh, though I'm not even sure if that's part of the Puffin Academy list of sites...

Have you installed VAMT 3.1? Makes activation a whole lot clearer if nothing else!

Have you told your router/firewall about your vLan? When setting ours up, I had to ask Virgin to add routes to the Palo Alto Routing table that was serving as our Firewall/Default Gateway. Nothing complicated (as far as I can see) just a route that says anything from the new vLan IP address range needs to be directed to the Core HP switch.

For setting up Windows 10 for staff, I highly recommend following the advice @Arthur gives here: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-10/165029-how-get-rid-candy-crush-soda-saga-other-windows-10-start-menu-junk-good-2.html I removed everything apart form the News App, gives a neater, more work like Start Menu. Also trialling NOT giving local admin rights to staff this time around. The threat of Crypto viruses, combined with VPN access, has got me spooked enough that I don't want to come in Monday morning to find all files encrypted over the weekend by a mistake by a member of staff... Otherwise, staff seem to like Windows 10. Helps that the laptops are very snappy! Also highly recommend docking stations as well if you can get them.

I would set another GPP at a higher level (so it takes precedence over your existing GPP, I believe that's how it works) that changes the proxy to something that won't work, and set the Item filtering like the below. You could also change the Group Policy refresh rate to every 5 minutes, and give your self a bit of leeway (say internet comes back on 5 minutes before the end of lunch?). And then I would test it as extensively as I could! You're absolutely right, you don't want students not being able to use internet for their actual lessons.

So, in theory, you could add a GPP (Group Policy Preference) to users and add a proxy via Internet Settings. I've looked, and you can't add it to a computer unfortunately (that I can see anyway). The picture below should help locate the setting. I would suspect that you would need another GPP to take off the proxy once the time has passed, but I could be wrong. For full closure, I've had little success applying internet setting via GPP, but worth a go!

You could try adding a proxy setting that goes nowhere, and then use Item-level targeting to a time range of lunchtime. This could then be applied to student users, the specific machines, or both. I have no idea whether it would work or not, nor how accurate the time range would be, but could be worth a shot?

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but fans of Persona might be interested in knowing that Persona Q is half price on the 3DS eShop. Picked it up yesterday, though haven't played it yet as I'm still finishing Trails of Cold Steel (which is also a LOT like Persona 4).

I thought that might be the case. I remember reading ways to force Windows 7 to see mapped drives as Libraries, might try digging that out...

Apologies if this has been covered before, but is there a way for Windows 10 search to search a mapped drive, such as a users home directory? Love the fact that Windows 10 search is extremely fast, but it would be really useful for teachers to be able to quickly search their My Docs for the files they need...

Could try printing to PDF instead of saving as PDF? Bullzip or FoxIt PDF printer might solve the issue.

Played and completed it, really enjoyed Moonlight Sonata as I recall... Just bought The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel after a reviewer described it as a mix between Persona and Suikoden. A few hours in and it's showing potential...

For us, the fix is to change the computer name, specifically the Member of domain bit. For example, our domain is network.local, so if on the affected machine the Member of Domain reads Network, we add .local or if it's Network.local, we take away the .local part. Click OK and reboot the computer.

Anybody used the Windows Imaging and Configuration Designer? Looks interesting, and the blog @Winner posted shows potential, at least Microsoft are looking at the Education market!

Always nice to see my blog getting linked But yes, in theory my GPP looks to see if the computer has been idle for x minutes at 3:15, 4:15, 5:15 etc and if it has, then shuts down. I haven't put this on staff machines (our staff have laptops) so you may want to change shutdown times etc.

I dipped my toe into failover clustering, and backed out of it last week after I realised I had made more points of failure than I'd fixed. This quick guide might put a bit of light on it, but essentially, as @Oaktech says, you definitely need independent storage, as well as multiple NICs on your servers and ideally a vLAN setup to carry just failover traffic between the servers and storage. The ability to Live Migrate from one server to another quickly was good, but you're still dependent on: 1, Your storage being accessible 24/7/365 so I would imagine a SAN or similar (rather than just a NAS). 2, Your Hyper-V failover host being up all the time (I believe this can move from one server to another, but I found that a sudden drop of connection and the entire failover cluster would fail) From my personal experience, if I were to attempt this again, I would want to ensure that the storage I used had built in redundancy, that the network I used was segmented away from the rest of the LAN, and that I had three servers in the cluster, rather than just two. One aspect I didn't look at, but would definitely look into now, would be having replication setup, so that one server had copies of all the VMs that the other server was running, which you can only (I think) do with a failover cluster.

Running Aerohive on a 1-5-9-13 arrangement. Now wondering whether it's worth shifting to a 1-6-11, though as a rural school we don't have other WiFi to contend with.

Definitely not your Palo Alto... What's the error message? There might be more info in Event Viewer on DNS as well.
