  1. Play Baldur's Gate (again)
  2. Just to throw Freshdesk out there, the free version would, I suspect, cover their needs!
  3. Going to have the same issue here come next summer I'm sure, so also wondering what other schools do!
  4. Check the Queued Activities and Activity Errors tab. From the Options menu, try clearing queued activities (even if it's showing as blank) then Reinstall Apps - Then check the Queued Activities tab again to see if the Apps appear there to be installed. I've always found Lightspeed a little hit and hope to be honest...
  5. We went with something similar, but with a 'Christmas tree' configuration so all the desks are at a 45 degree angle facing the front. Also make 100% sure that you have the power and network connections exactly where you want them!
  6. Sounds like an opportunity to trial out some different manufacturers. Might be worth getting on contact with a reseller who can arrange a trial or free AP unit. Or, whilst I personally wouldn't recommend it, Unifi equipment is pretty cheap, you get the controller part for free and other people on here use it quite happily.
  7. I would ask to see the Insurance Policy and the exact paragraph that he believes leaving network equipment on would void it.
  8. No. Any money saved on electricity you would lose on replacing broken switches. As you say, they're not designed to be turned off and on. I would be worried every single morning that something hasn't come back online. It would introduce a risk to IT service that is unnecessary. By all means, look at more power efficient switches, or if there are redundant switches that can be removed. Also, before he asks, turning off servers every day is also not a great idea!
  9. I believe schools can use R&R (Recruitment and retention) to add upto 12-15% onto a grade. This is usually temporary (1 year) but I've had it a few times in my career.
  10. Guardian - Web filter - Policy Wizard gives you a step by step guide to create a new policy. Then Guardian - Web filter - Manager Policies to move the policy up so it come into force before any Allows (if that makes sense?).
  11. We use Onenote / Class Notebooks extensively across the school, but a major drawback seems to be that work is not backed up anywhere when you are using the online version of Onenote, and we no longer use Onenote 2016 which took offline copies, and now use Onenote for Windows 10, which works in the cloud only. Which leads to my question, is there a way to back up all Class Notebooks, teacher work and student work, across the board? Either a paid back up or free alternative would be great.
  12. ScoMIS - https://www.scomis.org/ used them for years for hosting and support.
  13. Sadly you are probably right. We've changed the password twice, and the student insists that they haven't told anyone. We have a 1:1 device scheme, but it's possible they leave their Chromebook unattended long enough for work to be deleted. Because it's ClassNotebooks and whole sections are being deleted, there is no way to back up the work either. I think I'm at risk of derailing this thread, so I'll leave it there!
  14. I have a similar issue, in that a student's work is (probably) being deleted by another student. It would be extremely useful to be able to restrict a students login to one particular device if possible.
  15. Yep - Add the IP Address as a location on Smoothwall, then create a policy blocking messenger from that location.
  16. There is a major amount of admin work for a 1:1 scheme to work (marketing, chasing parents, keeping on top of financial work) alongside the IT stuff. Make sure that whomever is taking this on is aware of that and they have the capacity because you don't want that to fall on your shoulders as well! We're 4 months into our scheme, and it's working out reasonable well. Some tips: 1, Make sure you have a lot of spare devices, students forget theirs, or forget to charge them a lot. 2, Have a system in place to charge the devices, don't give out chargers, they never come back! 3, Have a good repair/replacement system with whomever you go with. Not a week goes by without a student damaging a device enough that it needs repair. 4, Know what happens when a student leaves or joins mid-year. As we're using Chromebooks, there haven't been too many technical pitfalls. We have SSO through RM Unify so that works pretty well tying AD, O365 and Google together with one username and password.
  17. Still have my Wii U, it's with my collection of older consoles (Raspberry Pie with Amiga games, Mini SNES, PS2, PS3 and 360) vying for time and HDMI ports! Tbh, the only reason for keeping it is to some day play through and this time finish Xenoblade Chronicles X and maybe Legend of Zelda Windwaker. My main issue is that the Gamepad now has a range of about 2 metres, presumable because the battery is toast.
  18. She's got the Key2, but it has some fairly major battery issues, so was hoping for a new Blackberry to be released this year. Thanks for the info on Unihertz, but some fairly major sacrifices to the quality of the phone need to made to have a physical keyboard!
  19. My wife is devastated, she only likes phones with physical keyboards, so has been Blackberry for a long time. If anyone knows of a decent phone with a physical keyboard, give me a shout!
  20. Nearly finished this as it's included in Prime Unlimited, generally found it pretty engaging, is the rest of the Rift War series worth a read?
  21. One last bump with a question, is there anyway of triggering Recovery Mode that doesn't involve the key combo?
  22. Thanks for the reply, but I don't think it's that. Either she is hitting the key combo to get out of lessons, or something software related is kicking in. I'm suspecting the former, as when I log into her account, nothing I do triggers it. Therefore, I'd really like to block the key combo if I can!
  23. I've got a student that is constantly being kicked into recovery mode on their (or any other) Chromebook. I was wondering if: 1, There was anyway of blocking students from being able to enter recovery mode, as it's a very easy way to get out of lessons? 2, Is there anything (software, profile, extension etc) that can trigger recovery mode other than pressing the required key combination that may explain why a student keeps getting kicked into it? I don't believe she is doing it intentionally... Thanks
  24. Perfect! Thank you. Link speed showing as 1000Mb/s Which is good, but doesn't explain why the network starts to fall over when wireless traffic hits around 150Mb/s... Back to the drawing board!
