The school has used it for years, tied into our RM Unify to *simplify* logins. By and large, teachers like it and use it regularly, parents seem to rate it, and office staff have nothing to do with it as it syncs directly to our MIS. The two issues we have are when the sync fails (usually not Satchel:One's fault) and students not using RM Unify to sign in. The first lesson in IT is all about how to sign into RM Unify and Satchel:One, so that helps with the latter immensely, but we still have numerous students over the course of the year not getting it. But you can also use O365, Google or Azure AD for SSO if you prefer.

Ultimately, using the Smoothwall for authentication didn't work for me, so moving it to either a DC or another server may work for someone else.

It's how I've got it setup here, apparently it's best practice to have a DC conduct the 802.1x stuff as it reduces network traffic... As long as Accounting goes to the Smoothwall, it works fine.

The Smoothie was fine at authenticating users, but the Safeguarding Report didn't pick up who the users were, only their IP address. Since moving to the DC providing 802.1x for the BYOD network, reporting is far more accurate. Anyway, I don't want to drag this off topic, but I would suggest that moving to a server to provide 802.1x authentication, whilst sending the accounting to the Smoothwall, is a valid alternative.

Interesting, I was told that using the Smoothie box for RADIUS and DHCP wasn't best practice, so I shifted to using a DC instead.

You may want to look at AB Tutor as well.

Might be worth look up Smarty, cheap and filters adult content as standard.

Do you have a Captive Portal in place? If that fails to load, that could be blocking access, turning the WiFi off and on might be kicking it into action? I've turned mine off to see if that helps with RADIUS accounting, but now have to wait to see if it has made any impact!

Apologies for the necro thread, but I'm having a similar issue with my Cisco Meraki Setup. Students can authenticate fine, but it's very hit and miss as to whether their network traffic is kept assigned to their username, or reverts to the IP address, which from a safeguarding point of view, is less than ideal. Similar to @Molsey Smoothwall diagnostics say that calling-station-id and nas-ip-address attributes aren't being sent, but I'm 99% certain they are! The SMTP Server needs to be: smtp.office365.com Enable SMTP Auth Enable SMTP TLS Enter username and password You may need to allow the user account in O365 to use SMTP if that's been disabled.

Also check you have the required PoE specification for the APs from your switches. When I looked at Cambium, they required the higher rated PoE specification (802.3at rather than the old standard 802.3af).This could be the same for Ruckus, I'm not sure.

If you can hard wire the Chromecast, or device accessing Stadia, then I've found the connection to be pretty solid and Cyberpunk runs very well. An annoyance is that my 2019 TV can't pass through the sound properly, so it has to be directly plugged into my Soundbar, something to do with Google cheap skating codec licences. To be fair, it's a next gen console that is, sort of, free. But I suspect it's on the wane, I got it to play Cyberpunk, which it does. Whether I'll buy another game, or keep my Pro subscription, very much depends on Google as @Roberto pointed out.

We've been using RM Unify for a number of years. It may, or may not, do what you're after, but it can auto-generate users, groups and distribution lists direct from SIMS or AD into O365 or Google (or both). It has increased its cost recently, but it has been pretty straightforward to use.

I've been similarly asked to look into this. Did people go with it, if not, what solutions do other schools use to do composition on ChromeOS?

Bit of a necro thread raising, but has anyone managed to get offline files to play nicely with Windows 10? I'm getting Network Offline issues when the device is connected to the network, saving issues, database corruption issues. I know, longer term, we'll be shifting to OneDrive, but until that happens I would love to get Offline Files to work all the time for all staff!

We use it for Sora. To be fair, their support people were really helpful. I couldn't get SSO to work with RM Unify, but if you have G-Suite setup it's pretty easy to integrate. Otherwise we just uploaded a .csv with usernames and passwords, and then use the user management portal to make changes.

Also, before you export the spreadsheet, ensure the data is for the last 30 days (there's a drop down menu to the top right on the usage screen)

I would: Login to the O365 Admin Centre - Reports - Usage Click Export and save the Excel Spreadsheet Open the spreadsheet - Insert Pivot Table Add Display Name to Row Labels Add Received Count to Values Add Last Activity Date to Filters Filter the row labels with values above 1 Filter the Activity date, manually clicking each date (there may be a better way to do this!) That should give you the info you're after

Also interested as the VPN Software used by Smoothwall has a few 'quirks' that as @mikkydoos says, aren't ideal in the current environment...

Cool, looks like it could be an in house job, though I have potentially got a company giving me a quote. On a related note, does anyone use the UniFi Switches? Do they have a good reputation? For the price of the APs, I'm looking at changing our Switch estate and still remain under budget. The only thing they seem to lack is a core switch that can handle a lot of fibre inputs.

That may be the route I have to go down. Just not sure the site team want me wielding a drill across the school!
