Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
3s-gtech replied to 6Foot2's topic in Windows 11
I think I already added it to the Intune kill list. Junk running in the background annoys the hell out of me. -
WSUS woes - some client machines not getting updates
3s-gtech replied to timbo343's topic in Enterprise Software
Thick or thin imaging? This used to be an issue in the old days of imaging with Ghost and failing to sysprep properly. Didn’t have issues with thin images, and have now ditched WSUS as it was a bloody nightmare in the end. -
Yes, we do. So first name would be Mr S, then Display Name would be ‘Mr S Smith - English’ If I put first names in there my sensitive parts would become jewellery.

You’re going to need to ask on a busy car forum like Pistonheads or Reddit (or Facebook if feeling brave). It’s quite a niche question! -

Linux kiosk logon to rotate between two web pages
3s-gtech replied to nicholab's topic in How do you do....it?
Something like Xibo? It’s overkill but can call up webpages on schedule and they’re not iframes. -
Welsh schools - Hwb Intune for Windows devices instead of local domain
3s-gtech replied to Olliekai's topic in General Chat
Yay. i will be keeping our current infrastructure running, pared back, for just such an eventuality. Those paid enough to make decisions like this inevitably get promoted out of harm’s way, or ‘head-hunted’ out of the organisation, then vilified by those left.- 32 replies

The symphony of a B-Series powered BL car struggling to start in the heat as the fuel vaporises in the carb(s). Until the battery dies. Like Mozart but with more unburnt fuel.

Ha! Password1 is too complex! I made sure to override those annoying Microsoft password policies - that way I can make sure that my passwords are the same as the usernames - that way I'll never forget them and they're super secure too!

Parents: "Shut the schools! It's clearly unsafe for the children! How dare you open! I will be writing to my MP! You are CHILD MURDERERS!" Also parents: "Why is $leisure_facility/shop/theme park/nail parlour/overpriced coffee shop I want to use closed?! This is deeply inconvenient! What about my needs?!"

I'd originally avoided it (for 10 years or so!), but it does work well and didn't take too much faff really. I had to move my ASM account to a different Apple ID then sync'd the lot. I don't tend to interact with it much.
-
Account per user with ASM (synced across from Entra). I can then license the apps and push them out with my MDM.

Do tell more. How do you find it overall? How much control do you have, and what can you get to and manage?
-
From memory, stuff works without it but I found DC operations markedly quicker with IPv6 active. You don't need it active on clients, Smoothwall, firewall etc. You're also going to 'recommended' settings rather than 'it works so I leave it' settings. Try it.

Entra Joined Laptop - Block Logins from outside a trusted location
3s-gtech replied to 2097's topic in Cloud Services
Can you restrict the wifi settings in any policy, so that they can only join your SSID? Make them useless off-site. -
Yes. I had to whitelist (no inspection) the site.

I have a folder on our (on-site) file shares. It's the rundown of everything from static IPs, our main audit, and written guides to our individual setup and services. All Word docs and Excel spreadsheets. Tried to keep it as simple, non-technical and accessible as possible. It's not accessible to anyone other than IT though. If something happens to me, it's there. There are still things that annoy me that I haven't documented though, because I use it constantly and expect everything there!
-
That's covered with our 'failing to plan is planning to fail' policy. Whoever booked them at 6am is welcome to put them in SIMS, where they'll sync across with our morning task. Otherwise, I have to do it when I come in and it'll usually be ready 15-20 minutes into the day.
-
What's the filetype of the video? Is it actually an executable?
-
Here - no name, no account. They're added by name to our MIS, which then syncs and creates their account. We then have an access trail. We don't use shared accounts. It means that every supply agency staff member has to be put into our MIS, but for safeguarding that seems like a small step.

Had it for ages on one mailbox (in one browser) but not another in a different browser. Then it seemingly got fixed and works fine in both again.
