wow i have just found this site http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect_setup_ubuntu_6.06 i asume its the same for 6.10 if not i can give 6.06 as i see it is still avalble for download and if i install ISPConfig i cna then do it all from webbrowser. is that right looks simple but i might be back.

is this the best one also as i am a novice with linux so my next question has it got a good gui if not is it easy to learn. i know basics. it says it does not. if not can you recomend one.

sure i downloaded it at home on two of the pcs i use and thought nothing about it at the time we were changing bb supplyer so i was expecting some disruption then i set up and was trying out dansguard which slowed down the network to a trawl. i checked the logs on the dansguard server and found ever 20-30 seconds somthing was trying to connect. i took of the proxy thinking it was the dansguard server. still slow so i checked traffic from the diffrent and found thats the toolbar is always downloading or connecting. my partners sone had one as well with another group of people i decied to take off both toolbars and if by magic traffic went down and my internet speed went up. i have done some other tests i dont know exalty what it is doing but it does eat my bandwith. and as i only used it for the feed i used wizz reader which only check every 10 minites and you can switch it off and then you manually check.

i have been using access for years and it has caused me nothing but problems. one of the big issues is the permissions it needs to run the thing i say to people is that if the do need to use access put a copy in there my docs then copy it back when finished. a lot of errors you will find is the fact two people try to access the same databse causes big problems.

Ok after a long time away i am back lol (not had time to do nothing rl getting so busy) right back to the problem in hand. we have decided in the school to set up a internal web server. As i have got a few pcs lying around and it is only going to be for about 60 or so students also going to put some teachers recorses on it and so they can stream meadia through a web browser without having to download it on the laptops. so i am going down the linux route with apache and mysql. one of the big questions is which distro. points to note. 1 I am a novice so this is a big experment. 2 will be simple to set up. 3 wont cost a penny as we have no money at all. i have had a play with Ubuntu and opensuse plus knoppix for what i am going to do what will be the best disto.

i found a big problem with it. when i checked it is always connected and takes up a fair bit of bandwith. i decided to go with a good rss feed reader as this is not continusly connected and cheaks at intervals ie ever 5 mins and it works well.

one of the probs we have is that the teachers log on in the morning without plugging into the network and so the profile does not sycn and causes all sorts of problems its easy to sort by getting them to do a manual sync but untill they do it they cannot print and its my fault.

the single man profile is good the problem i am getting is they get an error every time they log off like the profile cannot be updated ??

the problem i found especial when you have a new car there is a data bus system and i found the every time i swiched anything on it would go click out the speakers so when you are driving in the rain and wipers on int it would click every couple of seconds drove me mad.

i had a defaut profile set up in \\server\netlogon\Default User but it stiil seems to take the first pc they logonto as the default profile to set it up. i have worked around this by getting everyone to log on to a pc i have setup with a default profile that i have changed. but someone last week logged onto another pc and then i got i have not got this and that on my profile. so i had to add it after was not a problem but someting i could do without. also is there a way to set diffrent default profiles for diffrent groups of users as the ta's have same shortcuts as teachers (just most of them dont work)

thanks i think i have got it i do have hide c drive and restrict c drive its only this one folder that needs write as databases need that to work ( i hate databases)

i got a Harman Kardon Drive and Play and have not turned back and they have put the price down in halfords to 90 pounds was the best thing i ever bought for my ipod simply to use and safe. also very easy to install.

i have a small issue with profiles that i am tring to sort out. have needed to create a couple of new users and thats fine then they come to log on this is where the issue comes and it creates there profile using the default pc profile. i have created a default profile on the server which i would like them to use but it seems to default to the pc this is a bit of a issue as default profile on the pc does not have some of the shortcuts which the server one does.

so there is no way to force it to shut once it has opened explore.

right where do i start oh yes we have this software. when it installs it puts some examples on the c drive for students to use. all well and good but the here comes the tricky part they are doing databases. All the other exapmles work except databases i did have c drive restricted to stop them playing on the c drive no good. apprantly i need to give the students read write execute modify to this folder how do i do that without going round and doing it manually on about 60 machines. the software in question is texease studio ct. i have a work around for the time being but have been told this is not good enough. i have already had to remove the policy restrict c drive for them to access it i dont want to do no more ??

what about if you redirect the apps if i rember thats where the word stores it normal.dot if that is redirected problem solved. i am right in thinking it is saved here Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates so if Application Data is redirected so will templates folder. and even if your profiles are man it will still save this data

i have used this script and it works well have done a few mods to it ie 4 settings 1 home 2 school proxy 3 staff unfiltered proxy They need to log int proxy to become unfiltered 4 no change. and the best thing is that thay still cant change proxy manually its still grayed out. so i am really happy now. just need to know how to shut a script down as it opens ie and does not shut down till ie is shut??

i when a friend went for a job the other person had mcse ect ect but when asked a simple question about dhcp dns and reserving addys for print servers he did not have a clue and kept stumbling. my friend got the job all he has is 5 years exerperince but not a single qual which is a shame because i think he would fly trough it. but he just says its a wasit of money and would rather spend it on his kids. I think he is right. That was a year ago he has now been promoted works in the us and is in charge of 4 company networks and says to me when he interviews h looks for what people know and not what they got on a bit of paper some of the best people have got no quals but good experince.

you can then give it a tim limit to update and then it ping you to tell you if there are any new posts.

have you set up the watch list it will not update unless you got it on the watch list and if you want to up date it manually dubble click on the fourm link

you said befor not enough females in it they may not be in the tech support side but in the programme side and web desgin database and programme desgin 90% is done by women they sem to have the patince ie we rang up sims support with a problem and the only person who could fix it was a female who (so i was told) is there top programmer. and like i say behind every good man is a better woman ( his mum ) lol

you can do it via the gpo in the user settings admin templates control panel you can force a default lang but it need to be installed on the machine or you will have to go round and do it manual as you will need th uk lang pack installed look here for office http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ork2003/HA011402251033.aspx
