    Students go into that holding OU, then we move them into the OU they need to be in for permissions etc. Bromcom doesn't move them once they're created, so we can move them into the OU they need to be in after that. I like it that way, gives us overview, and the ability to move them into Sub-OUs if we need to strip a permission for whatever reason.

    Not really. If you want them to have their own device to do it, perhaps get them a cheaper Android handet and just not put a SIM in it (Nokia 1.3 with Android 10 Go is about £90 a pop) or an iPod Touch?

    Yes, but you need to make sure that parents understand that the liability to report that it is lost or stolen is on the child, so the school aren't liable for refunding due to that. That's probably why, even with the PII issues fingerprints can entail, a lot of schools still go down that route. Much harder (though not impossible) to lose your thumb.

    Oh it very much is a concern. Name and a photo on a card issued to a student is very different when you attach a number which can be used to identify students in different situations to it. DPIAs should be done across the board. The question has to be why students would need an ID badge or lanyard in the first place, let alone an ID number on it? Staff can identify them via the MIS, which has the photos on record, and they can be identified by their school uniform. Different for staff or Post-16 students... Unless there is a purpose for the number, then why have it at all?

    It's usually a thid party, not Apple. The most you'll get for an iPad Mini 2 is likely free recycling. There isn't value in them. Working condition you'd get maybe £20/£30 at most?

    You need to be careful with this one. GDPR/PII and all that. UPN is definitely PII. I don't know where an internal admission numbers or exam numbers would sit with that, but as they are identifiable I'd cautiously suggest they are also probably PII. One for your DPO or the legend that is @GrumbleDook

    I'm presuming that people were warned. I warned staff at my previous role. They still went out and procured software that wouldn't work on iPads without consulting IT first, but getting the Head's OK - which caused parent uproar. It was then made my responsibility to "fix it". You can imagine what happened next, but the head insisted the issue was one for me to solve. As if a 500 pupil school could tell Apple what to do... Suffice to say, that was part of why I looked to pastures new!

    Well I suppose you won't get next day delivery during the high demand of a sale. More likely to get it when there isn't a sale on and things quieten down...

    Ultimately it comes down to security. If Adobe can't guarantee the security of Flash to the point they've stopped supporting it (Revenue of $11bn) its not something a small school's IT team are going to be able to support either. Whoever makes the call, you need to get yourself a paper trail that you can turn around and go "Well I was against it... but..." when it all goes wrong

    Well that depends on the technology you use to deliver that. EoFTTC shouldn't cost much more than that, but I would certainly think of getting FttP put in if the opportunity allows.

    The only real safe workaround is to replace the software they had 3.5 years warning about, I'm afraid. If you start creating work arounds now, they'll expect them in 5-10 years too. Personally, I'd say you need to be firm and refuse work arounds. Say to them "Remember when they announced Jodie Whittaker was going to be The Doctor" or "Remember when Dunkirk came out at the cinema" and they'll go "Yeah, that was ages ago now" You can reply "Yeah, that's when they announced Flash was going to go at the end of 2020. You've had plenty of time"

    Lots of local authorities have done this. You'll find nearly all the high schools go their own way, as will primaries who are in MATs and those who have technical support from sources other than the LA.

    I wouldn't trust that they'd be fine. Temperature changes alone wouldn't be great for it - Does the enclosure have some kind of dehumidifier system in, even if its a little drawer for a decent sized pack of silica gel to go in? Plus like has been previously said, unless it's continually in the shade and the enclosure has UV protection too, they need to be exceptionally bright.

    ac.uk are usually reserved for FE, HE and occasionally I've seen them used with Adult Education establishments. So, you might get one if you do have a Post-16, but usually they stay with their school domains.

    https://chromex.io/en/ Plus, text to speech is built into Chromebook, so can't you use that? Surely the issue isn't blocking all internet access but using tools block everything except services needed that students can't directly access anyway (like APIs for text to speech tools)

    We do it all via Bromcom. Emails termly and end of year reports out, stores them in Bromcom and allows access to them via MCAS.

    I'm not so sure about that. DfE are certainly looking at it and Wales and Scotland have already made a state. It might be a little while yet, but don't be surprised to see it happen sooner rather than later.

    We will ask for them back, and redistribute if we have to. Ultimately, we need to backfill, as a lot of the ones we actually handed out were our own devices, as the DFE ones arrived far too slowly.

    Maybe in your school, but for most who have developed high quality wi-fi network and wired infrastructure with internet connectivity that isn't dependent on their LEA (like most schools aren't now) this is absolute bibble. Now is absolutely the time.

    Yes, but trying to do it on an iPad is fine for 1:1 but a complete management disaster for shared devices. There is no overcoming that right now. You see this where it's an opinion on devices. The Surfaces are a fantastic device. the iPad is great too, but there is nothing you can do on an iPad that you cannot do on another device. It's that simple really. Are we really going to take about how expensive a device is when you're talking about Apple kit? £470 for the first-party stylus and keyboard, do we seriously want to go there?
