I have been posting in the MIS thread for a while but have decided during a rare morning of easing myself back (procrastination *ahem*) in to work after the holidays and OFSTED 2 weeks before that. I work in a secondary school in Leeds, I live between Huddersfield and Sheffield and I am obsessed with snowboarding, climbing, general fitness and food! Welcome along! Always good to have more Yorkshire folk on the forums and you cover South and West!

I personally have 6 schools, 18 servers, and god knows how many devices I manage / look after, in conjunction with the rest of my team and the overall environment. I'm a IT Generalist by trade / experience, but I'm especially fond of the Raspberry Pi, having help start 2 Evil Genius clubs where we use the Pies to inspire their imagination.

Hi @MrZippy and a welcome from a fellow newbie;) On the raspberry pi interest, I purchased a RP2 over Christmas with the intention to use it as a low-power media server for home. Alas, it seems that it doesn't have enough grunt to provide a smooth experience (I know, schoolboy error) so I am now left with a RP2 gathering dust. I would be interested in turning it into a cloud box to dump my files from smartphones/torrents etc. Have you ever done anything like this? Edited March 4, 2015 by hcs-tom
MrZippy Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 (edited) Hi @hcs-tom. Welcome. In response to your question..have you tried the Openelec Build for the RPI2? (OpenELEC Mediacenter - Get OpenELEC). I use it on a couple of Pi's.. a B, B+, and an RPI2. It boots directly into KODI (formerly XBMC), and it is quite useful. The trick is to have something else do the heavy lifting for you. I run a MySQL DB on one of my Pis in RaspBian, which hosts the DB for KODI. THe physical media files reside on an NFS share, and you just add the source. I get decent performance even on the original B. The trick to remember is to buy the codecs from RPI for mpeg2 and VC1 (http://www.raspberrypi.com/license-keys/). They may or may not be necessary for your video.. but for a grand total of 2.40, can you really complain? Other things to consider: - With network streaming, it is always best to use a wired ethernet connection, especially with HD Content. - Have a look at this guide: The Perfect XBMC Installation On Your Raspberry Pi - gaducated.com - Also, read this one for some good ideas: The Only Raspberry Pi XBMC (now Kodi) Tutorial You Will Ever Need - Finally, Look at the Kodi Wiki with regards to MySQL setup. Offloading the DB to another machine / device (be it another pi, or perhaps your NAS) will let your Pi do what it does best - Me personally, I don't use the CEC remote.. I just use the XBMC remote app on my phone and control it that way. Also makes browsing quick and easy. Edited March 4, 2015 by MrZippy

Thank you also for the heads up on the codecs that are available, I was (unreliably it seems) advised that the hardware codec of h264 was the only way to go on a RP.

I run the show at a private school in Leamington, whatever the title is, it seems I'm responsible for everything IT related. The problem is EVERYTHING seems to be IT related. So I've done stints in various IT roles including vehicle manufacturing, Health Clubs, Nightclubs and bars, the fashion industry, but this is my first time in education, wish me luck.

I've been involved with school data for 14 years but am really struggling to get my head around the new Progress 8 Measure, retirement is still to far off to be an option to I had best knuckle down and get to grips with it
