I have been searching and having demos for quite some time, thats the impression I'm getting. Pupil owned machines need man in the middle otherwise you are opening up yourself to trying to install software on their machines and all sorts of other issues that come with that.

We currently use Barracuda firewall and Censornet for our web filtering. We now want to delve in deeper and setup keyword searching and alerts. Unfortunately it seems that this is an additional module on either device at a cost of more than what we are currently paying. Our senior school heavily use pupil owned devices which is where we get a bit stuck. There are web filtering solutions out there, but these rely on an agent being installed. You can imagine how that will go down, although Senior management believe they will be able to convince parents to install these, I am not confident in their persuasive ability. Does anyone know or use any device that can sit between their devices and the outside world, that doesn't need any additional software installing, but will do keyword searching, alerting etc, and quite importantly won't kill my budget.

AssetTiger is already set up and hosted (for free) so can be accessed from anywhere and has an app. SnipeIT is $39.99 per month hosted, otherwise you have to download, setup and host yourself and self-manage. Just for that alone AssetTiger is a much better choice. No maintenance or worries if its up to date etc.

I'm on iOS 11.2.2 and its still working fine. Once I update to 11.2.5 I'll test again, but might not be for a few days.

Hi all, I've been asked to sit in on interviews for a computing and ICT teacher for years 6-11 tomorrow. I can interview for an IT position, but for a teacher's position, now that's a different kettle of fish. What sort of questions should I be asking? Any advice on what to look out for or interviewing techniques for this one? Have any non-teaching IT people been asked to sit on this type of interview before, I'd be grateful for the advice? CRAP, absolute rubbish, don’t do it, you will regret it. Promise you everything, deliver less than nothing. Cheap, there is a reason for that. 8 months of telling them there was something wrong with their kit, they promised they would escalate every time. When they finally changed it their Senior Technician couldn’t get it to work. In the end I managed to get it working, God knows how. Now if we need anything changing, I dread picking up the phone. I’ve told support off like a child for tutting at me down the phone. Over 40 hours of phone calls to them in the first 8 months alone. As compensation they offered us another year on top. WHY would we take another year of your awful service and rubbish hardware. I’m happy for anyone from Barracuda to come back and fight their corner, but they won’t. They have ignored all correspondence about redressing this. Avoid like your job depended on it, because it will if you recommend them. Spread the work, share my post. You’ll have a headache that no tablets will cure. Enough feedback? I can go on!!!

Hi all, I hope I'm posting in the most appropriate forum. We have a company that is developing an app and looking to trial in schools. We are currently trialling it in our (private) school and I have been asked to help with the technical side of installations as they will be trialling in LEA schools. Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the protocol of third party app/program installations in these schools so was wondering if anyone can shed some light onto this. We have this week installed in a school, the desktop app has to contact their servers in order to check the login credentials are correct. This was fine, but the app would go no further and wouldn't download the course material further. Working with one of the ICT co-ordinators (one of the teachers, who isn't very technical) we discovered that the teachers have to log into a web portal in order to allow them to access to more websites. Once the teacher entered their credentials, the app would then work properly. I am concerned that each time a pupil will use the app, the teacher will first have to enter their credentials so that the app isn't blocked by the firewall (I'm assuming that its an LEA firewall the the teacher has logged into). What steps should be taken in order to install third party desktop apps in order to add them to the "safe apps list" so that the pupils will be able to use it without the teachers having to insert their credentials each time? Is there a process that the app development would need to go through to allow it to be certified as a safe app by the LEA to allow it to work through the firewall? Thanks in advance

Wireshark is showing the server is receiving DHCP requests, BUT it seems to be only requesting on the 192.168.67.x range. Also showing destination as 255.255.255.255 which doesn't look right to me. Please see screen shot. [ATTACH=CONFIG]32428[/ATTACH]

Unfortunately its what I inherited. I will look to reduce the scope as we don't need anywhere near that amount of addresses. I have wireshark installed but never used it. Looks quite complicated. Any short youtube videos or guides you know that will guide me through how to test if the server is receiving DHCP requests?

Server is standard install (not Hypervisor). Switches are all Netgear either GS724T, GS724 or GS716T. Both ranges are on the same network, No VLANS. 100 Range is for printers

Hi All, Just wondering if I could have some rough idea of the costs for a Firewall and Web Content filter management hardware solution. I've had a few quotes, but management believe "no one is paying that sort of money" and that "everyone else is getting it much cheaper". Specs to include, Firewall for approximately 300 people, Web content to include layer 7 and Bandwidth management on a 3 year deal. How much per year?

I have an address pool of 8556, 2% currently in use Address Pool 192.168.67.10 - 192.168.100.254 Subnet mask 255.255.0.0 A few Exclusions, a few reservations. Most items are currently on the 192.168.67.x range, there are 3 items on the 192.168.68.x range and 6 items on the 192.168.100.x range Over the last few days we have had a few users complaining they can't get onto the network. I've noticed a couple of IP address clashes and a few machines have just not been able to get an IP address at all. When I add an address in manually, this seems to resolve the issue for a few of the users that I have tried this on. Lease duration is 12 hours. It may be a coincidence, but I have had a few users complain about slow network. Any ideas greatly appreciated as I'm banging my head against a brick wall.

Hi all, looking for a web content management system and firewall preferably all in one hardware but maybe look at virtual. Have read a few posts and am looking to get a few demos next week. Like the Tru View of bloxx so its pretty much up to date and not relying on out of date lists, but it seems a bit pricy. Also need a firewall with integrated with VPN capability. Around 300-500 pieces of equipment connecting at any one time. Reporting Bandwidth management Allow teachers to manage certain content filters BYOD Proxy detection AD authentication and guest access Had a quick look at the Smoothwall S4, anyone had any experience of this? Any other recommendations all welcome.

We have a few Konica Minolta Biz Hubs, 2 being the same model. Over the past few weeks we have users complaining they can't print. Have had the Konica Engineer our a few times, he has updates a couple of the drivers. We have finally discovered that the problem is printing photos or photo type images. Users are able to print, documents spreadsheets etc but not photos even small files. This is the same for the different printers. Network is all working fine. I have installed the drivers directly onto a hard wired PC and a laptop running off wifi. These spool the print job on their own hardware and are able to print fine. The engineer from Konica and I have come to the conclusion that there is an issue with the print spooler on the server. The problem is we have no idea where to go from here. How do I go about finding out the exact problem and then how do I go about fixing the issues. Any advice greatly appreciated. If you need more details to help diagnose, please ask and i will try my best to answer.

We used to use Symantec, I wasn't keen as it wasn't very intuitive to use and wouldn't always do what it said on the tin. Seemed pretty slow at installing too. We had seen a few different types, many were very similar to these ones, quite thin and good quality build. Keyboards are quite flexible and are best used on a desk otherwise you can sometimes mistype, but once you get used to it, its not a problem. The other variations were quite bulky and looked a little childish. Most users we asked liked the look and feel of these. USB was a necessity, Micro HDMI to attach to larger monitors if needed, front and rear cameras were liked, Micro SD a bonus along with the ability to add 3G if needed. Price was pretty good too, especially when buying 125.

Those Prowise look good and at £199 including windows Pro, that would be high on my list to try out.
