Bigape Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 Hi there I'm Andy, based in Wokingam and one of a team of 3 tekkies tasked with keeping things running. The best part about the school is the IT kit is all first rate and as a IT and maths college we're committed to keeping things the best they can be. Last year we ripped out our old wireless network and replaced it with all Cisco kit running off a Cisco wireless controller. It's been so well received we're now bidding for the funds to double it's capacity The worst thing about the school is it's a listed building which makes adding new infrastructuer a nightmare as we can't do anything to the fabric of the buildings Oh well - that's life:D

Bigape Posted April 2, 2009 Posted April 2, 2009 The Controller is a Cisco 3750G/24 port capable of supporting 25 Wireless access points - cost us a shade under 10k. We're running 23 Cisco Airport LAp1142 access points from that. (500 quidlets each) We want to add another another 3750 with another 25 WAPs (if we get the funding). It was a bit of a bugger to set up, but we 'borrowed' a Cisco engineer for half a day, once everything had been installed and it now runs like a dream. It needs very little maintenance and I just check the controller each morning to see if things are OK, then forget about it. I've managed to remove all the wireless black spots we had on the site using this kit and staff can now move freely around the site without falling off the network - it was a lot of money, but it's saved us so much more in time and effort over what we had before.

openaccess Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 I am a BTEC National Diploma for IT Practitioners student in the east. I've had a strong interest in computing and networking from a young age. At the college they run an RM CC3 network with about 600 workstations, 200 or so laptops and a few dozen lasers. Help out the network technicians with bits and bobs. Mainly here for the insane stories people have and how they overcome them. I was thinking of going on the RM graduates programme; has anyone done this, and/or got anywhere with it. Im doing the IT Practitioners, only got a few months until completion If you need any help or pointers, send me a PM and I'll try my best! Time to introduce myself. Im from a large secondary school in Devon with approx 850 Desktops and 250 laptops. I mainly deal with front line IT and laptop support but also get involved in all the other stuff. My current 'mini-project' is Licensing. Certainly a learning curve
