For future reference if anyone else is in a similar boat, I found an xml file which lists sync conflicts on W8.1 and W10. It may well be on W7 too. C:\Users\*username*\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\OfflineFiles\SyncConflicts.xml

I think you're on to something there! I suppose if the modify date on the documents folder is current then it would be syncing. The main thing we're worried about it PST files so I could check the modify date on those too. I love this forum!

We will soon be upgrading a good couple thousand laptops to Windows 10 from 7/8.1. Each staff member has their own laptop. The laptops use offline files for desktop, documents and favourites. Is there a way to check the staff member's files have synchronised while logged in as the local administrator?

My colleague's job has come up, most of us Band 4 technicians are ex-education. It really is a great job if you enjoy IT Support, driving and talking to people. I'm after some recommendations. I've got myself an iPhone 4S. I would like to buy a fairly rugged case and a suitable in car holder so that I can use it as a sat nav. Looking at some of the photos of these in car holders, I can't really tell if a phone in a case would fit!

We just asked PRM to collect our drives along with a few other items. If you don't have enough other items, talk to another local school and join a collection with them. PRM are happy to do that as they just need to cover fuel.

Another vote for PRM (Especially after we kicked up and they now give everyone asset registers and data destruction certificates by default!) I do seem to remember that there is a minimum limit of items though.

Stuart and Geriant are decent salesmen, have been in the game for a while and know how to treat customers. They are especially good for getting hold of items that other companies struggle with. Their items are also very reasonably priced.

Thanks for the quick replies. Fixed it! The QNAP device uses Samba. I needed to alter a setting on the Local Computer Policy. Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\Microsoft network client: Digitally sign communications (always) needed to be changed to Disabled. Makes sense as the QNAP device isn't digitally signed.

I've got an interesting problem here. I've created an image using MDT, rolled out to a new machine and I realised that folder redirection for the start menus and desktops aren't working. After a bit more investigation, it looks like that although I can't file browse the server (a QNAP device) I can ping it and web browse it. Even if I try to map a drive in the command prompt, it errors with 'The specified network name is no longer available.' Machines built with the old image work fine but this new image doesn't, I've tried building several different machines. It's a brand new image and I've done nothing more than install programs, update Windows and make a couple of unrelated tweaks. I'm not really sure where to start with this, what would you do in my situation?

I'm having a problem building computers that are on anything other than the core switch (3Com Baseline 2928-SFP Plus) on our RM CC4 network. If I try to build a machine that is on a different switch, most of the time an IP address isn't picked up and the build fails. I gather the cause is likely to be multicasting and spanning tree not getting on very well. We've got a star network with two cables going from the core switch to each of the four other switches (all are 3Com Baseline 2924-SFP Plus). I'm worried that if I turn off spanning tree to see if it's causing the problem, a loop will form. My questions are: Would the dual network cables be for redundancy or increased bandwidth? Is there a way to have the best of both worlds and have loop protection and allow multicasting to work?

Does anyone have a contact for a company who will recycle these? Most companies specify originals only. We're stocking them up as it seems a shame to throw them out to waste.

We didn't bother with roaming or mandatory profiles, though I did create a default domain user profile. I exported a list of users then used Mikeys Magic Active User Manager to recreate the users. Copied the user folder file structure over and used icacls running in a for loop to apply the correct permissions to the folders. That last bit wasn't as easy as it sounds, took a bit of working out mind as I hadn't used icacls before! The whole RM to Vanilla process was a bit scary at times as it was such a steep learning curve, although I had contingencies in place as much as I could, there were a few moments where I could have quite easily chucked it all in and gone home to bed.

We have school supplied polo shirts with the logo, job title and our name. We also wear black/grey trousers but recently we've all bought ourselves proper work trousers with an extra thick section of fabric over the knees and lots of extra pockets. I wear steel toe cap boots even since I dropped a projector on my foot! We went for a grey theme for our tops. Other support staff departments have gradually decided to follow suit with the polo shirts. Premises wear burgundy, kitchen staff wear black and so on. It certainly makes it easier for people to identify us, the departmental colour coding has made its way to other things aswell.

On the off chance, does anyone have any spare RM Classboard or Interwrite interactive whiteboard pens they would be willing to part with? A couple of ours have expired in the last few months and we no longer have any spares

We run around 12 RM Classboards around the school and recently a few of the pens have gone to the great RM salesroom in the sky (One had a taste for coffee which is eventually what killed it). I've contacted RM, ICT Direct and Wedgewood but no one can get hold of replacement pens. I assume that RM rebadged their boards, anyone happen to know what they actually are? Or even better, where I can get hold of a few pens? Cheers

We've got a pot of money allocated to buy ourselves a shiny new server for our RM CC4 network. We currently have an RM Dualserv Pro: 2x Intel Xeon E5450 3Ghz Quad Core CPUs 16Gb RAM Two lots of RAID 5 arrays of 400Gb and 270Gb There are two roads I could go down, buy a new server or I could suggest we upgrade the current one (Apart from the abysmal hard drive space, the current server is adequate for our network of 100 desktops and laptops). I reckon it will be quite a while before we have another pot of money allocated for this. Our current server was bought in 2008 and the warranty ran out in 2011, it would be nice to have a server with a 5 year NBD on site warranty. Hard drive space, reckon I'd want at least 4 TB of useable space along with a spare hot swap included in the price. I'd like to delve in to virtualisation to make package building and testing much easier. If the new server ran all the RM gubbins, this old server could be kept as a virtual server and general technician machine rather than logging on to the DC. An extra 2008 R2 license is cheap under our SWGfL umbrella agreement and RM would sort out the installation side of things. What do we reckon on my thoughts? RM don't sell hardware any more. Any recommendations of companies that supply servers? Cheers

£150 on presents?!? My parents were never that generous and I'm only in my early 20s!

It's quite a task but as long as you plan and test as much as you sensibly can it will be fine. I filled an A4 exercise book with notes, ramblings and questions to answer! I spread the work over a year, a day a week then the final push was over the Summer Holidays. Work out how long you'll need to do the task and then double it. I did it single handed apart from a week in the Summer where I had a volunteer give me a hand. It's not something I would want to do again by myself!

We started to do this but we soon realised that tagging the 2000 plus devices would be both soul destroying and there would have inevitably been a lot of room for error. In the end we asked SAM for a serial number seach, they stuck one on and we're using the serial number stickers that come with all the devices anyway!
