Yes! The only people in the school who can access Youtube etc are the staff

I agree with Geoff. Once you're into the cycle of paying money out again and again to keep the same piece of kit, then it's time to ditch the junk and get new. The school I'm at has invested heavily over the past 4 years in IT and AV kit and the govenors have agreed to a rolling 4 year replacement policy for IT and AV equipment. Now I've got projectots that were installed over 4 years ago and are 'due to be replaced'. The vast majority of these are still as good as the day they were installed, so I see no reason to spend 500 quid on a new one. I've reached and 'understanding' with the dept head (in charge of the budgets) to not spend the money but use it as a disaster contingency fund. Then when a server or switch dies we'll have the money to replace it, the budgets will still balance at the end of the year and everyone gets to be the good guy for a change. Another point to note - we've also got some of the NEC projectors, and they're the only ones I've had to replace in 4 years - out of about 60 others we have, I've only had to replace the bulbs on 2 and they all get used for 5 periods a day!

You seem to have missed the most essential piece of kit any well stocked support department needs. Just put a sign up on the door, so it can be read from outside, and write on it 'Back in 10 minutes' If nothing else it will let you know who has trouble with the English language (strangely, that usually seems to be teachers!)

Got fed up with it after a few weeks - went back to TF2

We used to have a teachers PC in every room, but 4 years ago, all staff were issued with a laptop and told in no uncertain terms that not having it with them was not going to happen. We're now slowly taking the PCs away and if a teacher is without a laptop for even one lesson, they tend to behave liike the world has ended. One teacher even goes so far as to refuse to teach if she doesn't have a laptop

Me too - I've been officially designated the departments MOG (miserable old git)

Are you looking for a student or staff one? We use Securus and students are required to agree to the AUP when logging on or they're denied access to the system I've attached a copy of our student AUP. I'm in the process of drafting a new staff AUP as the current one is 2 lines that basically says 'don't be naughty!' student.txt

Why do I get the feeling that Davenater is a student/pupil?

The Controller is a Cisco 3750G/24 port capable of supporting 25 Wireless access points - cost us a shade under 10k. We're running 23 Cisco Airport LAp1142 access points from that. (500 quidlets each) We want to add another another 3750 with another 25 WAPs (if we get the funding). It was a bit of a bugger to set up, but we 'borrowed' a Cisco engineer for half a day, once everything had been installed and it now runs like a dream. It needs very little maintenance and I just check the controller each morning to see if things are OK, then forget about it. I've managed to remove all the wireless black spots we had on the site using this kit and staff can now move freely around the site without falling off the network - it was a lot of money, but it's saved us so much more in time and effort over what we had before.

Hi there I'm Andy, based in Wokingam and one of a team of 3 tekkies tasked with keeping things running. The best part about the school is the IT kit is all first rate and as a IT and maths college we're committed to keeping things the best they can be. Last year we ripped out our old wireless network and replaced it with all Cisco kit running off a Cisco wireless controller. It's been so well received we're now bidding for the funds to double it's capacity The worst thing about the school is it's a listed building which makes adding new infrastructuer a nightmare as we can't do anything to the fabric of the buildings Oh well - that's life:D

We've all had it. A fault has appeared on a machine/projector/IWN, whatever, and the person reporting it is adamant that it hasn't been touched. The fault is usually something that the average year 7 kid could fix without looking up from his playstation, so what do you put in the call log? A couple of my favourites are..... PEBCAK There was an issue with some of the digits in the bio/hardware interface The second one once got me a pat on the back from the dept. head after I 'fixed' his wireless connection problem on his laptop (I turned the wireless switch back on)

We're running about 50 of various makes. The only problems that we've come across is the smaller screen size on the first batch of HP machines we put in. Everyone has complained they're too small, so now we make sure that the screens are at least 10 inch. Our next project will be to issue all year 12 & 13 with netbooks (about 120), so it's a toss up between the EEEPC netbooks and the new line of Toshibas due out at the end of the month

Gone with the wind - tried watching it many years ago when it was showing in Leicester Square. At the interval I walked out thinking 'what a stupid ending' not realising that there was an interval:getmecoat:
