I know some companies do wipe the hard drives however would it be better to wipe them beforehand? Also, who do you use? I was thinking of using Computer Aid. Thanks!
synaesthesia Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Plenty of places doing it, we use PRM Green from Rugby who do free disposal and collection and certify for data destruction which, I hasten to add, is something you more than likely can't provide yourself. Peace of mind and documentation in case something does come back to you. Of course nothing stopping you doing it anyway but mostly wasted time, especially for curriculum stuff where the majority of data is all server side. Just cache you have to worry about.

jamesfed Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 I will always do a hard drive wipe using 3 passes of eraser(Eraser) (just for my peace of mind) but there are more than enough company’s out there who will take kit away for free and do a secure wipe of drives. We use a place that’s local to us (in Abingdon) but other edugeekers will no doubt come up with some better options.

mcrompton01 Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 We use Computer Disposals Limited Computer Recycling and IT Disposal - Printer, Laptop & Monitor Recycling - CDL here, provide certificates of destruction and or data eraser and they take toner too. We usually get free collection and takes about 6 weeks to get all the paperwork back.

Hit Screwdriver/Chisel with hammer. Repeat, adding a couple of direct hits to the HDD with the hammer. Task is complete when the HDD sounds like a sand timer when shaken.

You could replace the Screwdiver/Chisel and Hammer steps with Electric drill with metal bit If your DT department is feeling very kind, you can always get a jig made up to fit a HD so that you can use the pillar drill for multiple passes.

Yep, but nothing so Hi-Tec here. Obtain supply of 6" nails and matching 4lb club hammer from Site Team. Place hard drive on floor of workshop. I'm sure you can all guess the rest.
