"The Helvetica font is celebrating its 50th birthday today... "

So, do you have any font preferences for email, writing documents, IMs, etc.?

Personally, I'm liking Trebuchet MS for everything... looks nice :)

Wingdings!

I'm a Tahoma/Verdana fan myself, and prefer Bitstream Vera Sans/Deja Vu Sans on Linux.

The school uses Gill Sans MT and California FB for publications which aren't too bad either :)

One of the things that is often forgotten is that there is a reason for serifs. They provide the eye with a line to follow, greatly aiding the reader who is either very good, or of low ability. Less so the average reader. The upshot is, that any "body text" should be in a seriffed font.

This is less important on screen, or in narrow columns. I had the misfortune to read a book by some trendy TV comic type who's publisher (or him) thought that a sans-serif 'looked cool'; it was 'king awful to read!

Comic Sans MS, there was another one but I dont recall the name

Grrr, Comic Sans MS must die. Horrible, horrible font.

Agree 100%! My design for our school website was professional and based on a private school (I think it was Westminster or something) but then I was told that it must contain all our school colours (4 of them) and must use the Comic Sans MS font 'as it is friendly'...

Regarding serif's - that only applies to printed text. If it is on screen Sans-serif is actually easier on the eyes (this was taught to me when I was at uni). But yes, publishers who try and be 'modern' by using sans-serif fonts in books are just wasting money - people won't buy difficult to read books.

comic sans

that being said, I was told only last week that dyslexics find they can follow words and meanings written in comic sans better than most other fonts.

Still hate the nnnrrggghh

Tahoma for me!! It's just nice cool looking font. I also like the new Office 07 fonts, but I'm more keen on Tahoma. But the one thing I hate is seeing Times New Roman

Most public stuff I do is written in Verdana, but I know people that like Comic Sans because it doesn't create a stylised "a" (I still hate it though).

I also really like the font used on British road signs (you can download it - it's called Transport)

Isn't Verdana is the only font that is a "True Type" one for both PC's and Macs?

Don't think so - we've just bought some new fonts here which are apparently "MAC and Windows Open Type" format...

I'm a fan of Calibri or Gill Sans myself.

Calibri for a modern, clean stylish look, or Gill Sans for a more traditional look.

Agreed that Times New Roman is way overused, and boring as hell to look at :)

Although the flip side of that is that people who suffer from dyslexia find non-seriffed fonts easier to read (and text which is left-justified only, not left-and-right justified, but that's another topic).

Serifs are, however, useful when carving in stone, as they give cause the stone to break cleanly at the desired point. Sorry, sad pub trivia quiz fact, I'm full of them!
