Hi all, It's been a while, I know. I've gone from working in a middle school to working for a university. So, as far as I'm concerned, I am still an edugeek. We are having a problem over here with a shared workbook. When we try to open it, three out of the 5 sheets show only grey - no cells, no data, just the column letters and grey. I know the data is still being read because the other two, readable, sheets are interacting fine with the data that's on the other, 'blank', sheets. We have tried everything to solve this, but haven't been able find a solution. The problem only came about when I set the workbook to be shared. No-one has had any time to mess with it, so I know it isn't human error (except, possibly, my own). Has anyone come across this before. Has anyone found a solution. Thannks. It's good to be back.

Hi peeps, It's been a while, I know - I'm no longer an eduGeek, but still think this website is a brilliant resource. So, I thought I would use it to tell you of a new project I'm working on, and it's a very simple one. I want you to email me at [email protected]. Email me anything - a story, question, poem, song... anything! It might seem like a strange, and potentially stupid idea, but I just want to know what happens if someone is given an email address that they can send anything to. I plan to put my emails on the site Email Me - but don't worry about your personal information, it won't be published. I should point out that I make no money from doing this - as I said, your personal information is safe. I am just a 20-something guy, sitting in his garage, with a bit too much time on my hands that wants to know what happens when random people email me. So, send me a message. Sadly, I don't have control over the server - otherwise, that sounds like a good idea.

Does anybody know of some software (pref. freeware) that would sync files on a local system to those on an FTP server automatically? For example, if I were to change anything on the local files, those changes would also occur to the files on the internet. Thanks

Thanks for your help. Your solution didn't quite work, but did remind me that I could create conditional comments - so i just created a new style sheet for IE and inserted the following code in the Now it looks good on all browsers...except Opera. Turns out Opera doesn't like negative margins - I migh tackle that later though!

I thought of doing that at the start - but the design of the site, and requirements from the client, meant that the shadows had to be affixed separately. Which is a shame really, because that would solve the problem.

I have been working on a website for a private client, and everything is going rather smoothly - except for one thing. The client wants a shadow on their site, so I have been playing with repeating images in table cells and div boxes. However, I find that FF and IE can never agree on how to display something. At the moment, I have the right-hand shadow in a div box, which displays perfectly in IE. However, firefox seems to want it about 10px further over than it should be. The CSS code it is listening to is: #rightshadow { width:753px !important; padding:0px; margin:0px; background-image:url(../images/rightshadow.png); background-position:732px 0px; background-repeat:repeat-y; } 732px is exactly where is should be, and is what IE displays, but FF doesn't. I feel like there is just a peice of code that will correct this, but can't currently think what it could be. Any ideas? I've attached an image of the problem Thanks - it's good to be back!

Since arriving, I have had one sunny day - and the rest have been (literally) freezing. Yesterday, it snowed - I mean, I'm meant to be in the desert here! Although, when it was sunny, it was SUNNY - my poor British skin didn't know what to do!

Just wondering if you had looked at Joomla - it will give you a nice consistent theme, and also you can get modules that will add most, if not all, of the components that you require the site to have. Although, I guess that approach will mean you lose any past data...

Hey everybody, Firstly, thank you to everybody who wished me well as I embarked on my trip to the States, leaving my job in the process and thus becoming an ex-edugeek. I am now here in Reno, where it is (nearly) sunny and I have (nearly) got over jet-lag. I am quite pleased that I made the decision to come out here, not just because it means spending time with my fiance, but also because it gave me the break from 'normal' life that I really needed. Which leads me onto this Pointless Question of the Week: What about your current situation would you like to change, and what would you like to keep the same? Answers on a postcard...or on the forum.

We also have/had it - any software that requires booking someone to come to the school to install it is not a good piece of software in my book.

At my (ex) school, some teachers complained that they couldn't access some youtube videos. Sounds similar to your problem. I couldn't work out whether there was any logic to it - as often just restarting the computer would get it to read the vid.

I'm going to Reno, Nevada. I've been told to pack for the desert...but it might snow (so I've just bunged everything into a suitcase). I will be getting a job out there, and it will probably be in a school - whether I go down the IT or Maths route (or both) is not yet decided. As for annoying an American, I've had quite a lot of practise at it (after all, the future Mrs. Sqdge is one) - I find heavy use of sarcasm to be quite effective / detrimental to one's health.

Today is my last day as an EduGeek for some time (possibly for ever). I'll keep reading and posting on the forum, but it will no doubt feel strange that you're having all the fun while I go and move to America to get married (naturally, you're all invited), possibly live in a nice house with a swimming pool (you're not invited), get a better paid job etc. Yeah, I imagine there will be times when all I want to do is draw a network diagram, or get my hands covered in printer toner, or wipe sick off a keyboard. I will be envious of you. Don't pretend to have a miserable time just for my sake - EduGeek is here so that you can all celebrate how worthwhile, rewarded, and respected you feel in your job. It's clearly also here to marvel at how well-made, well-designed, and well-supported modern technology and educational software is - and it will be sad for me not to be able to fully join in with those frivolities. But I will try - maybe I'll invent a school of my own, just so that I feel back at home with you guys. I'll stop now, lest my tears short circuit the keyboard. (although the above post seems a little sarcastic, I did quite enjoy my time as Network Manager, and if it wasn't for peskily getting engaged, I would still be probably working as that)

Although I don't work in the independant sector, I have a friend who does. He says that indie schools treat IT in a more business like way than state schools do. So, while state schools like all the kids to learn, the indie schools are more interested in getting their brand noticed, the equipment to be top-notch, and everything to run ultra-smooth. Obviously, that is the opinion of one school, so it may not apply to you.

Does anybody know how I might be able to remove the print icon from the toolbar of Office applications en masse? We have a lot of kids who click on it, and then realise that it has printed to the default printer miles away. It would be better if we forced them to go File -> Print instead. I know I could do each computer individually, but I was hoping there was a nice easy way to do it through scripting, or through a mimic script. Cheers

It's included in the drivers for the Intel Wireless network card that's installed. It seems you can get away with disabling this service, and all you'll notice is an increase in the computer's processing power...apparently.

It seems to return back all the correct settings: The user is in an OU called "Year5" within an OU called "Students", and the group is called "students" in an OU called "Groups". Yet still it returns this "there is no such object on the server" error.
