We have a computer in a our school that would be very useful if it had the ability to switch between the admin and curriculum domain. I know there is software out there that can do that (Multinetwork Manager, Netswitcher etc). However, being a cheapskate, I was wondering if anybody new of some free software that could also do that? Cheers.

I'm off to America to experience the school system over there, eat their far more superior peanut butter, and marry my girlfriend (not necessarily in that order).

I leave my job as Network Manager in 4 weeks times. When I joined the school, they had not previously had a network manager (I'm not overly sure they knew what one did), and it was the first time I had been given that job title. Therefore, my question is this: What kind of things should I be doing to make the transition from one network manager to another as easy as possible? Bear in mind that there will be no overlap between us, and the chances of me being able to meet them when they arrive are slim to nil.

Ping is something I ocassionally use at school. I'm not sure how well it takes to USB though.

I going to spread the word to America - and maybe get married on the way. No, you won't lose me - but I may be an ironic EduGeek for a while. In case you want to know more, the sheep is called Gerald. He's a semi-autobiographical sheep that I draw when I'm bored. You can see more of him on Paktocon (my website).

My to-do list still covers an entire whiteboard. And, since I handed in my notice 2 days ago, I now only have 4 weeks to do it all in!

If you google "joomla shack" you'll notice they have a link to their free templates.

{UPDATE: Originally, in this post, I published a work around to the Vista - ActivStudio problem. However, Promethean asked me to remove it. I have done this. However, I do still know of a workaround. It isn't supported by Promethean in any way, and thus I and they can not be held responsible if anything was to go wrong as a result of trying the solution. I don't think I can get away with publishing in the public domain; however, if you can think of a way of sending some sort of private message to me, then maybe I might be able to send you some private, wholly unsupported, message back. Sorry for the inconvenience}

Apparently Promethean will know more by tomorrow. Their CEO has been getting a bit uppity about the situation.

I'm pretty high up on the list when you google my name, but first place goes to the fact that I have the same name as a comic book character...apparently (I think the artist was having an off day when he thought up that name).

I know of a school that ordered 20 Dell laptops at the beginning of July, and they are due in sometime in October now. Similarly, I have two laptops that I have had on order since 8th July. They are now due in on 24th September. My supplier (3rd party) suggested that they might have some Athlon processor laptops in a warehouse somewhere, and they may be able to ship those out sooner. Eventually, the shortage is going to hit every computer manufacturer. It's just that Dell make them to order, and so they are feeling the effects first.

I also have never heard of the IT bloke - gay connection. Maybe it's something they say behind our backs in the staffroom/playground.

I realise this should also go in the Unix folder, but it's also a Windows question, and since this forum has more readers.... I have just installed Ubuntu 7 on Virtual PC 2007. I am trying to get it so that it picks up the internet connection. I have read lots about just selecting "Virtual Switch" on the settings menu, but that option isn't there for me. Does anyone know how else I could do it?

A lot of the courses that are advertised online only go as far as teaching you what you need to know - they don't actually provide the exam or give you the qualification. That may explain why some of them are really cheap. One way of finding out which qualification to get is to look at the job adverts. Find one you would like to apply for, and see what qualification they are looking for.

You've made me want to see if my old Apple Mac 512K still works. There were some quite amazing games available for that.

Yes, and I've even checked that all the cables are plugged in correctly, that it's switched on at the wall, and that I'm not trying to rest my coffee mug on it.

I am running Office 2007 on Vista, and have noticed a strange thing occurring when i try to start any of the office applications. When I go to the start menu and click on an Office Application it just won't load. There's no message or thinking, it just doesn't do anything. Instead, if i want to open up word, I have to search for a .docx file and click on that. Has anybody else had this problem? Does anyone know of a solution?

I'm sure there's some freeware stuff out there, but you were right, there is some software that can do it.

Could you ever forgive me for being so stupid?

There seems to be a big difference between Mac and PC Mac: Wait until the new OS is out. PC: Wait until SP2 of the new OS is out. But I agree with Ross, wait until Leopard is out, it will only make the Mac Mini experience more enjoyable.

Do you think as they built it they got faster and faster? It's a good thing they didn't build it too tall, they would have had to start all over again.

A lot of charities will still take CRT monitors. We got rid of about 30 of them last year. It cost us the transport fees, but they were far less than getting a WEEE accredited removal company. Plus, we got a certificate for doing it.

We use fingerprinting for the library at our school. It is very successful. I don't really know how it infringes on a child's rights. It's not as if you can use it for anything other than books/food.

Give me Reno, Nevada any day. Never been, but it's where my girlfriend lives so I'm bound to like it. Failing that, North Norfolk's quite nice.

So, I'll just warn people that I used PING to ghost an image across a network. It didn't do it very well, so now I have several computers that won't start properly. Thank goodness it's the holidays!
