  1. Most public stuff I do is written in Verdana, but I know people that like Comic Sans because it doesn't create a stylised "a" (I still hate it though). I also really like the font used on British road signs (you can download it - it's called Transport)

    Log-off Hang

We have one workstation that seems to refuse to let people log-off. You can click on "Log off" and the taskbar and desktop icons will disappear, but it will just stop there. It doesn't freeze though. Pressing ctrl+alt+del and then 'cancel' will then bring back all the icons and the taskbar. So far, the only way I have been able to log the computer off is to do it remotely or by forcing a shutdown (not something I like to do very often). Any ideas?
  3. I have found recently that my job description has been altered to state that I am required to keep my head while all about me are losing theirs. It would appear that I am not allowed to get stressed - especially now that OFSTED are on their way!
  4. Sounds ominous!
  5. I do hope you're not getting soppy and sentimental on us - those characteristics are just not suitable for the macho world of educational IT
  6. Yeah, I would need my piano. Although I'd rather have someone else's slight nicer piano.
  7. For days I have been wondering what that ticker was for. I'm clearly a little bit slow. Congratulations.
  8. It's kind of regular in that I find by Tuesday night / Wednesday morning I am quite bored. Also, what's better than getting to know fellow edugeekers a little bit better? I forgot to mention that I also rescued my SatNav, which was kindly telling me that there was a delay in the traffic due to an accident situated right about where my car was now!
  9. Last Friday I was involved in an accident on the M25 that wrote off my car (I'm fine, thanks for asking). It was a strangely enjoyable experience, but in hindsight I am confused about the priorities I gave certain things. For example, as soon as the car had collided into me, I thought the most important thing in the world was to switch on my hazard lights before I even bothered to put any form of brakes on! However, the really weird thing was the items in my car that I considered important enough to "rescue": some scripts, a Toyota Yaris mug (yes, they really exist - and I drove a Seat Ibiza), and my broken iPod. Which made me think of this week's Pointless Question of the Week: Assuming you have all your personal belongings with you in your car (excluding family and friends), what would be the first thing you would rescue in the event of an accident?
  10. It's convenient that your school name is "School name goes here" - less work to do on that template!
  11. I also like the sliding gallery - but it's quite imposing. The sites quite intense overall - black is not the most relaxing background colour.
  12. It depends what they're used to. Many of our kids have found that whatever they do in the html program(NVu) is not necessarily how it will come out in Internet Explorer. Therefore, by just creating an image, you are almost guaranteeing that it will look exactly how you want it to look without the need for Div boxes and the like.
  13. I am also the youngest member of staff at school, and so have felt that I can't be quite as powerful as other members of staff. On top of this, our school receives all the expelled kids from the surrounding schools, so behaviour is an issue. I have found the most successful way of disciplining a child is through punishments they are not expecting. They all expect detentions and lines, so I avoid giving them those. Instead, I have found that, since they are affecting the work I can do on the computers, I will affect the work they can do. "Deleting" the contents of their personal drive (well, just cutting and pasting to a hidden folder...but they don't need to know that) is quite successful. However, my personal favourite is just blocking the internet for them - simple yet gets the message across.
  14. Does anyone use these? Do they do what they say on the tin?
  15. The SENCO at our school has recently been on a course. At the course they mentioned that SEN kids work well if they are given a laptop. My SENCO would now like a couple of laptops for her SEN kids. Naturally, it is down to me to find them. These kids do not have learning difficulties in the "I can't do reading and writing way". They have ADHD and Tourettes and, in one case, both. So, I need a laptop that could withstand pretty much anything. I know that there are some pretty good bomb-proof ones out here, but they all come at a price. I was wondering if anyone knew of a good make of laptop that was fairly hardy, or that was specifically designed for quite a rough life, without it costing a lot? Although I wouldn't normally touch them with a barge pole, I was surprised that RM didn't create such a thing...or am I wrong?

  17. So is the queen.
  18. I'm sure I've seen this type of thing being sold for a while. In fact, I'm certain that Staples do a similar thing.
  19. Takes me 7 - 8 minutes to get to work in the morning It takes me 40 - but that's because I cycle....except when it's raining, when it takes me 5 thanks to the internal combustion engine.
  20. Our school was a big experiment in 'modern' design. It looks like an airport (with a control tower and hangars and everything!) and spent the first ten years of its life with open-plan classrooms (you can probably imagine why that didn't last).
  21. It's nice to know there is a service on 4 months ago! The lack of pictures also makes it slightly creepy.
  22. To be fair, there is quite a lot of prospectus-like content on there, which is more than I've seen a lot of other school's sites offer. It's just ruined by the pictures, the purple, and the..umm...pfonts.
  23. He has it in for everyone. He's been there since the school opened in 1972, which might explain why the place is falling to pieces.
  24. I can assure you that my school website is considerably worse. It's so bad it doesn't appear on Google and only has one picture of the school, and the rest are generic pictures of American Kids using equipment that our school couldn't afford in 100 budgets. Needless to say, I didn't make it.
