Saw one of the younger TA's in the staff room at 9am on a Monday morning and didn't know whether to ask her if she needed a coffee because she'd pulled an all nighter and come straight to work. I mean, she didn't look particularly tired or anything, but she was clearly dressed to go clubbing, vertiginous heels, makeup and everything! I've noticed this, too. Female members of staff get a few 'This is unacceptable' and given free reign. For the male members of staff it's shirt, tie, suit pants, smart shoes. I think the ladies' dress code here says "No shoulders on show" (i.e. keep your bra straps hidden), "No wearing leggings for pants" (an exception is made for the dance teacher) and that's about it. It's a restriction of what not to wear. Whereas the men it's "You're only allowed this.", and there's a blanket ban on trainers unless you're the P.E. staff who are allowed them for obvious reasons. Realistically, though, women have a much wider variation of clothes than men do. Menswear seems to be limited to "Casual" (jeans, tshirts, etc), "Sportswear" (tracksuits, trainers, football tops) and "Black-Tie" (shirt, blazer, suit pants, dress shoes). Women can wear "casual" clothes elegantly and professionally (such as summer dresses and heels), or they can wear the "black tie" equivalent (blazer, blouse, tailored pants, etc) I used to wear shirt-and-tie-and-pants when I started, the only modification was wearing steel-toed boots. Which are actually not supposed to be worn as per the dress code. But my feet are rather important and I'm not going to risk dropping a 50kg+ server or UPS on it, thanks. Now I wear work-mandated uniform, which is a grey polo shirt and black work pants that have a few extra pockets on them. Edited October 5, 2015 by Garacesh

I've had a few comments on how it's weird seeing me walk into school in my "butch biker gear" and come out five minutes later with my dress on. Laddering about 3 pairs of tights every week from the velcro pockets in my armoured bike trousers gets old fast, though.

Admittedly it's nice to have work pay for a uniform so that I'm not wrecking my own clothes (the amount of suit-pants I'd go through that started off black and had white/grey faded knees got pretty old, pretty fast.) but it does feel a little less professional than the suit.. Then again I hate ties. So it's a reasonable tradeoff. I don't think I'd wear a dress under biking gear, though, personally. Mostly because I'm male, but partially because I can't imagine it going underneath very comfortably (I suppose you could roll-up the 'skirt' bit? but then you'd have this ring of cloth around your waist..) so I presume you're getting to work and then getting re-dressed.. I dunno. That's just not for me xD Get some 5000 dernier tights Surely at that point you might as well just get actual pants? xD

I got pulled up fairly early for not wearing a tie, even though I was in a smart shirt and trousers combo. I was told as I might interact with parents and external companies I had to look smart. Next day I was in a meeting tendering meeting with SMT and external contractors, all the contractors were without tie except one that looked terribly un-smart and the Head was in a tracksuit..... I brought it up again and was told it didn't matter get on with it. I now wear a waistcoat as it keeps the tie under check, got fed up of nearly strangling myself and it ending up in my face while trying to work. Keep getting asked if I am going for a job interview or told I am dressing too smart.

I do remember the first week I joined, where they had run out of short sleeved shirts in my xxl size and supplied me with long sleeved starched ones (eugh!) The following week, I had tailored all the sleeves to short and machined a double blind hem in college blue. Very nice…[emoji3] They tended to leave me alone regarding dress code after that… Although I do recall my NM suggesting that I went on security detail due to the getup I arrived in… full motorbike salopettes, body armour, flip front helmet, bovver boots… only due to what the winter weather throws at you on a motorcycle.

CAM Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 If I could ditch ties I'd do it in a heart-beat, they are a throwback to old days and don't serve any purpose except catching a narrow strip of coffee stains. Maybe wear them once a week so I don't forget how to do them up. Men could be far more creative with professional looking fashion at work if we could ditch the tie!

thebatman Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 School days, I have a Polo top with school logo and department name on, black jeans and steel toe shoes. Boss, Black shoes, Black Trousers Shirt and Tie. In the holidays we do what we like, normally the polo tops thow.

I'm usually always wearing my zip-up hoodie as well and haven't been told off for it yet Teachers are usually all dressed quite smart, as well as the TA's. I've seen tattoo's on show also.

Most of the teachers at my schools are kinda scruffy; I'd certainly not class what they wear as smart/business.

AMLinington Posted October 6, 2015 Posted October 6, 2015 I work in HE and the breadth of fashion choices here is staggering. Personally, I go for 'Nice' Jeans (Black, Ironed, no rips or worn patches), a Tunic top and a cardi. I prefer 'decent' shoes or smart boots - you'll never see me in trainers. My colleagues run the full gamut from T-shirt, shorts and scrubby trainers to full on suits. The average is 'Shirt and Chinos' with some variation on black 'walking trainer' type shoes or leather shoes. Surprisingly, in such a multicultural environment I see little in the way of Cultural clothing choices - most people just opt for 'decent casual'. There are several 'tiers' of dress code here - Upper management and Senior Academics are expected to wear more formal clothing, whilst support staff, Non-academic, Non-management staff are freer - to a point, but it's a very very flexible point. Other support staff have a uniform of sorts, or are supplied with branded Polo shirts, Fleece jackets and stuff. Usually you'll find anyone that has a role that involves roaming campus or coming into contact with Students will have a branded Uniform - Estates and Facilities, the AV and IT techs that aren't desk-based, etc.

Although I'm not sure the 'School' you work at is quite the same as the kinds of 'School' the rest of us are used to... Corporal punishment was banned in our schools years ago - I suspect it's a reward at yours :-P 3

It's just the regular sort of school thanks. Down a dark alley where over 18's go through the dark door with the ugly doorman, and the chains and whips and the black leather. And SIMS. Or maybe I just wear a tshirt and sit at a desk. I would ABSOLUTELY wear a gimp mask though! 1
