RobFrain Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Just seen this on the news BBC News - Are work suits on the way out? It just got me thinking what do you wear at work at school/college? When i first started I was pretty young and didnt want to wear a tie - so I didnt. I was then told we had to so I did! Since then the students have given me much more respect?! I also noted one of the comments said they work in IT support and wouldn't wear a tie due to Health a Safety!!! I couldn't imagine wearing jeans and a t-shirt to work!!!
MK-2 Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 at my old place it was just a "wear what you like" thing for a long time. we then decided to wear trousers/shirt but no ties. at my current place i wear the same, shirt/trousers no tie.

Last thing I need to worry about if I'm hauling a printer around, or changing a projector bulb, is a tie being caught in something unneccesary. That and I hate ties. So I tend to dress in jeans, shirt and suit/blazer top, nothing too expensive, last thing I want is to ruin a good shirt with ink toner.

webman Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Shirt, trousers and tie - mainly bought from supermarkets due to the low-cost-to-high-damage-probability ratio. I've never found ties to get in the way, but I take it off if I'm working in ceilings just to stop it getting ruined.

I spent the best part of 18-19 years wearing shirts, waistcoats, bow-ties and tuxedos....When I found out that I didn't need to be so formal.... That all changed! I get bags of respect, around the college, no matter what I wear, and I truly think that what anyone wears should not be an issue.
sparkeh Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Used to be shirt and tie. Got irritated with tie getting in the way/tucking tie in/taking tie off, so the tie went. Then got irritated with rolling shirt sleeves up and down all the time so the shirt went. Now its trousers, t-shirt and smart jumper.
Pete10141748 Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 (edited) When I started here were only 2 other men working at this school, one teacher who wore a suit (well shirt & tie anyway) and one TA who wore sports gear (jogging bottoms and hoodies etc) so I just balanced myself in the middle of the two, wearing smart trousers and shirt but no tie, usually a v-neck sweater as well; smart, but not suit smart. However my suit trousers (which were not cheap!) soon got pummeled into oblivion from crawling under desks, crouching at PC towers, and gluey/sticky/paint-covered hands of the younger children! So now I wear Dickies work trousers, hard-wearing and packed with handy extra zipped pockets for screwdrivers/batteries/usb drive/whatever else I might need on a job, shirt and either jumper or zip-up fleece if it's nasty weather like today. And it's proved a valid point today too, after moving 24 very large printers I have scratch marks, dust and toner all over my trousers, if they had been suit trousers those would have been destroyed by now. It's strange through, no-one in this place really seems to pay much attention to what staff wear. The Head is always kitted out in very smart dresses, tops, skirts, boots and jackets. The deputy's follow suit although not quite as smart. The male staff either wear shirt&tie if they are a TA or the school's PE Staff kit if they are PE, the female staff seem to just wear whatever they want. I'll be honest and say that sometimes I've caught an eyeful of cleavage and seen a few skirts which seem a bit too short to be professional...... but then the staff who wear those ain't bad looking so I'm not going to complain! lol Edited February 11, 2011 by Pete10141748

The other 10% I really go for it (even have a shave) and look proper 'banker' like, (yes I said banker) but then everyone thinks I have a job interview! I wear anything and everything in school holidays, which is handy - pick-anything-out-of-the-wardrobe days!
elsiegee40 Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 In accordance with the school dress code, I wear tailored trousers to work. Jeans in any shape or form are banned as are trainers and open toe shoes/sandals. The latter are more of a problem in summer. The top half is usually a polo-neck jumper and school fleece in the winter cos my den is freezing. In summer I wear a school polo shirt.
bossman Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 Shirt and tie from starting here 9 years ago and it has had its effect on the staff as our IT team all wear shirt and tie (not forced through dress code) but because it looks professional for a business and this is what we are a business. T-shirts and shorts with flip-flops during the holidays when no staff are in is relaxing and this is what you will find me wearing then as for @webman just a smile is his answer when the holidays come around hehe!! ;D

Last thing I want is people who can't make their minds up On my first day here I wore trousers, blazer and tie. The Head of ICT said she expected me to come to work more sensibly dressed. When I asked if she meant a suit, she said no, jeans and a t-shirt. I don't like jeans, so it's Cotton Trader trousers, polo shirt and a warm top in the winter. I often get covered in dust when crawling under desks and I hate ties. 1

Photo or we don't believe you :-) I think the comments about getting more respect when smartly dressed are interesting - I'd guess this is because you then look like teachers (who probably get respect). If you worked in a place where the dress code was more relaxed then it probably wouldn't matter. I spent 18 years wearing suits etc and was quite happy to do so but now I generally wear jeans/trousers and shirts or T shirts (and shorts when the weather is warm!). Working in a university means that no-one cars what you wear. You're pretty much always judged on what you do than how you dress which I think is the way it should be. Sylv3r Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 When I first started I wore shirt, trousers and tie but for the last 5 or so years I've worn a full suit, shirt and tie combination. I don't find a tie gets in the way and touch wood up to now haven't damaged any clothes in 10 years.

Double cuff shirt nice cufflinks, nice silk ties with tie clip, small pinstripe trousers and jacket to match. glennda Posted February 11, 2011 Posted February 11, 2011 I wear Smart Trousers and Shirt - V neck jumper and no tie - I HATE TIES! I will occasionally wear a suit but rarely. I'm pushing to get some embroidered Polo Shirts made up and possibly a Fleece. Then I don't have to wear the stupid name badge as premises are allowed not to wear theres as they wear Polo's with The school name and logo with Premises Staff written on them (apparently okayed by ofsted on last visit).

UBS recently tried to get all their staff to start dressing smarter only to be taken on by their staff. A suited work uniform is so outdated in alot of cases! In schools however dependent on role smart = good. In my department its dress down day friday so jeans, smart top/shirt, trainers. Though as in any place the higher up you are the more smarter you are. It seems how smart you dress determines how you feel, how your taken in the workplace. If your a techy wearing suit/tie, its not ideal but gives you an air of authority in schools, just my two p's.

Before the transfer, while we worked at the school, it was jeans and polo-shirts with the school logo on. So it's not been too big a change and I think what we have now is a nice balance between comfortable and smart.
