Extended Support for XP runs out in April 2014 - I'm still happy with it on our network - a few work colleges may disagree. I am wondering how long other schools will be using it for ?

My only real concern is new kit - will companies still write XP drivers etc.....

Also other comments regarding keeping it for another year would be interesting to read.

Thanks.

We moved to the schools agreement about a year and a half ago, so windows 7 was a nobrainer for us. Over the summer (xmas) holidays we have pretty much upgraded everything to windows 7, with the exception of the Finance dept and related computers who will move over slowly and carefully..

We started off with a voluntary group of staff who we upgraded first, about 20 of them, and through their feedback we tweaked our images/settings etc till we got it right..

We then just let staff come and see us in an adhoc manner and migrated them one at a time over the space of about 6 months so it was a gradual change. This actually snowballed, as staff wuold see the new shiny windows 7, and then feel left out or whatever, and want it for themselves..

We got a new batch of laptops halfway through last year that we put windows 7 on, so the students got a taste of it, and now when they start back in Feb all their machines will be 7..

Got a PD week coming up soon, which we have been given 2x 4hr sessions dedicated to windows 7 / office 2010, so hopefully come the start of term, it should be plain sailing..

(not sure if this answers your question or if ive just rambled)

When M$ announced support was finished mid-way through this year we were planning to go Vanilla. When they then turned round and said 2014 it filled me with joy (literally), and we will plan to keep it here until support is finished.

If it ain't broke and all that

I'm keen to do the update to something more modern here, and with the new licensing scheme with MS, we may just start thinking about doing it in the next year.

We're hopefully going to be doing the upgrade in Summer 2012. We originally wanted to do it this summer but circumstances got in the way and we don't think we have the time to plan it properly.

All Windows 7 here. No major problems, most of the smaller ones where sorted during testing. Actually thinking going Win 7 x64 due to Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 being x64 only.

Probably next year for us as I want to get the server backend up to 2008 R2 first. I always see the desktop and server OS as a package and like to keep them in step. Also need to allow our tutors time to move their course packs over to 7 for file management etc (teaching PC beginners).

Tbh it's not so much any technical reason for wanting to upgrade (apart from maybe BitLocker) but just to get the new shiny interface on the PCs to keep up with what people get on new PCs at home!

Out of interest which did you deploy... Windows 7 x64 or x86?

We are currently XP throughout apart from me and the other techs as we are getting used to where everything is for a role out next summer throughout all out clients

Mix of XP and 7 here, XP will only be phased out with the old hardware - many of our machines are not up to the new OS. Anything new has 7 on it though, x64 or x86.

I suspect I won't have to look at Windows 7 for at least 2 years due to financial constraints. We have a lot of PCs and laptops that are running XP quite happily and do the job they're needed for but are probably too old for Windows 7. The cost of hardware replacement alone would be far too high at the moment.

Pretty much windows 7 all over now. The odd XP machine left but they are being hunted down. Converted the whole campus in Summer 2010 and did teachers laptops on a phased basis for the 1st term. I can't say we've had too many problems. Staff seem to have coped with it fine.

Moved to 7 during the summer and it's all working rather nicely. The staff got to grips with it really easily, including an upgrade from Office 2003 to 2010.

We do have quite alot of old machines here, most of them worked fine with Windows 7. We do have some where the sound cards don't work and some lacking full graphics driver support, but a bit of a shuffle round of PC's to move these into areas where it wasn't important and we're sorted.

Yes it was a big job and a complete pita at the time, but we're seeing the benefits from it as our support requests have dropped significantly so we can spend much more time on proactive support and preventitive maintenance.

Really? i just spent 10 mins trying to work out how to insert slides from a file in 2010.. Common sense told me to look under "insert" like in the older versions

Apparently now its " New slide - reuse slide - from file - browse for file"

I think we will hold fire a while on windows 7, what put me off was the KMS, the fact you had to have 30 machines ready before it would start working means we cant test it in a small non-critical room. I like windows 7 itself though

all our pc's came with XP Prof OEM licences

Would cost us a bundle to upgrade to 7 !

we are on MS open licence agreement for everything else so that wouldnt be a problem ..

XP works fine for us and i only reimaged in the summer .

Is 7 supported in Acronis yet ?

if i was to go 7 i would upgrade everything 2003>2008 server also office etc .. Would take me yonks lol !

Lets see, CC4 school is all Vista. No problems there so that probably won't alter for a good while to come.

CC3 is obviously XP but looking at CC4 for a summer install. This will come with Win7 licences for the new machines so will probably go with that and phase out XP as things get replaced.

Vanilla school is another matter though as we still have hardware that isn't capable of running Win7. I think here we will just have to get the machines up to spec over the next few years and make the jump when possible.

We found the little flash tools I've attached really useful when we moved Office versions. They allow you to click on the task you want to do in Office 2003 and it shows you how to do it in 2007

Still 2003 & XP/O2K7 here. Plans for upgrading had to be rescheduled due to financial circumstances. I'd rather do the back-end first too, so 2008 first then Windows 7. As someone else said, not through necessity, more to keep pace with new intakes who have Vista/7 on home computers, otherwise I'd wait until support for XP is withdrawn........if it ain't broke etc.

Changed my focus now to cost-savings through virtualisation, expansion of thin-client network etc.

Currently testing my apps on Win 7. We plan to move the newer machines over to Win 7 in the summer and keep the older ones on XP. We'll couple that with a move to Office 2k7 or 2010, not sure which yet.

We moved from XP to 7 over the summer apart from the finance department. We really wanted to do x64 everywhere but there was just too much rubbish software mainly in the maths dept that won't run in x64. So we went with x86 with the idea of changing to x64 in the next 3 years. We have given each dept a list of there software which is not x64 compat and told them to find something else before the change to x64. This gives them a few years to find a new product and to spread the costs of change over a few years.
