How far do you travel to work, how long does it take?

hi everyone,

 

i am thinking of aplying for a new job, only catch is it is 60 miles away from where i live. (1 hour and a half drive).

 

so just wondered, how long it takes others to get to work, and does anyone else travel for this time/this far.

 

No conclusions will be drawn from this postm it is just a bit of friendly discussion.

I am 5 mins by car from where I work and should probably walk in.

I travel 25 miles and it takes me on average 40 minutes. Been doing the same journey for 13 years now.

 

Back in the mid 90s I had a 50 mile journey and that used to be knackering after a busy day.

Most days, Derby -> middle of nowhere, about 17 miles but mostly on A roads - 30 minutes or less out of rush hour, up to an hour in it. Few days a week it's Barnsley -> same middle of nowhere which is about 50 miles, less than an hour on a good run, up to 2 in rubbish motorway traffic.

One job is 5 mins by car, the other 15. Probably should cycle but there are big hills and no safe road between them.

mrwITch has been doing a 90 min minimum commute for several years and it is slowly killing him. He manages to keep it a quick as poss by starting off at 6am and leaving work at 4.30. If he had to do it in the rush hours then it would take at least 2 hours and probably more.

My advice is - if the job is brilliant, then do it, but otherwise think very carefully. A long commute can really wear you down.

About 3 miles to my closest school and 5 miles to my furthest. ABout 10 minuutes in the car. I can't cycle or walk as I take all my tools, spares etc.. with me

Only 12 miles, outskirts of Southampton to Winchester. Saturday morning 20 mins, Monday morning or Friday evening 50 (by Mway, there are alternatives of slightly further but 40 mins) and if some dolt of a Reptile has done something stupid in the fast lane it can be over an hour. 40 mins home after a long day wears me out.

Eight minutes by car, twenty minutes cycling (thirty if I take the scenic route), only go by car when I have to (oversleep).

 

I do know various people who commute around the same distance as you're planning to, so it does happen. All depends where you'll be commuting though and whether the increase in salary offsets not only the extra cost, but also the extra time you'll be spending.

Roughly 5 minutes for me, on foot. Live about 1km from school.

 

My boss drives about 40 miles into work each day, so not quite as far as you propose for yourself, but it would make me question the home/work balance, as how much time would you have to yourself each day if you spent 3 hours driving...

About 7 mile for me, but as I don't drive it takes about an hour on public transport. Time to get fit and start cycling in I think!

200yds and a slow walk takes five mins lol.

I used to do 60/100,000 miles a year all over the UK. Well glad those days are over.

Witch mine isn't even worth getting the bike out for! lol

Main office I work in when not working from home is 8 miles and takes any where between 10 and 25 minutes depending on the traffic on the A180, if I go to the other office 12 miles away its around 12 minutes down the back roads unless I got stuck behind a tractor.

 

If I have to go to one of our remote sites for a early morning site down it can be anything up to a 30 mile trip at around 40 minutes.

10 minutes walk. 20 minutes by car (due to traffic congestion) - I usually travel by bike as that's about 5 minutes

8km (5 miles) but takes me anything from half an hour to an hour depending on traffic! The bus takes about 20mins but is expensive. Looking at getting a bike now the weather is getting nicer.

 

edit: my last job in scotland, i had to walk down my drive, cross a road, and i was at work. And i was late every day.

Why does it take you 50 steps then if you're at home?

For me,

Train - 16 minutes walk either side of the station and 8 minutes actually on the train...

Car - between 12 and 35 minutes depending on lights and traffic...

Bike - about an hour...

I'm 40 minutes by car up the M4. The motorway is fine but the bits getting to and from the motorway take a long time.

 

Sometimes getting to work after the motorway is a nightmare because one of the local roads shuts due to high tide.

 

On a positive note, I love my journey to school in the morning as it's my time. Just me. Never mind all this eco-car sharing, I like my time driving listening to music, a podcast or if I'm in the mood - the radio. Nice and quiet ready for the day ahead.

 

Driving home is the same - my time before life begins again during that time before bed.

 

It's a bit humbug but I hate giving lifts to people as well :-)
