How far do you travel to work, how long does it take?

My current job, 5 mins to the main place. However as we support other organisations, if we're going there, not more than 20 minutes.

 

My last job, it could be up to 1 -1 1/2 hours drive depending on time of day, traffic and what site (it was a multi-site organisation).

20 miles and 40 minutes (average). Mostly motorway. By the way, anyone else noticed a fantastic difference between holiday and term time? During school holidays I can easily shave 10 mins off that time. Can always tell first day back for kids, traffic is a nightmare! How many people take their kids to school via a motorway??!

Mines a 7 mile drive which takes no more than 10 minutes by car (just enough to be inside the on-call for emergency disasters and get involved in late night things), I used to work in the south lakes which was an hour drive each way, lovely school and nice drive in the good weather but was incredibly draining, when I got home I just wanted to sleep as a full on day took it fairly well out of you followed by the 1hr drive on high speed roads = one mentally dead me

30miles door to door. Takes 40mins (great free road) to drive. Used to be 22miles but took and hour and a half cos of driving through the centre of Leicester everyday, I hated it! Love the commute now but would love to work where I live just because of costs of travelling. It's easily £300pm in fuel costs!

When i first started working for Serco i was travelling from Wakefield to Derby and back every day on my own time, fuel and car. That was about 70 miles and It was ruddy expensive in the end and i couldnt afford to do it. Eventually i managed to get a work from home job with them so that i didnt hve to travel. I wouldn't of coped much longer though.

I turned down a job working with John at Settle because i couldnt stomach the journey again. I'll not do it again, unless i'm determined to leave the place i'm working at and its a good offer.

24 miles here, takes us about 20-25mins by car.

 

But I know someone who drives over an hour a day to work, and someone else who takes over 2 hours by train to work each way!

37 miles door to door for me, through Lincolnshire country roads; takes about 55 minutes on a good run but Grantham is infamous for grinding to a halt at the first sign of a passing cloud, so this last winter when the roads were iced up (and Grantham is sunk into the ground - every road in is downhill) all the quieter back roads were clogged up with crashed cars so everyone funneled through the one main road, and it took me nearly three hours to get in. That was dull.

 

Journeys are made bearable by "sourcing" audiobooks online and listening to them on the drive; 2 hours a day of having a story read to me is much nicer than 2 hours of just driving, and I'm catching up on those classics (and otherwise) that I never got round to.

 

I do sometimes think about how much I could do with the £120 a month I spend on diesel though. Went from being a techie at the same school as my other half to NM here and we're not actually any better off now because of fuel costs, as we can't share a journey any more and I'm driving twice as far as before. The way I see it, though, if I get a job within half the distance next time it'll be a hidden pay rise for me

I used to do 60/100,000 miles a year all over the UK. Well glad those days are over.

Witch mine isn't even worth getting the bike out for! lol

And i bet your always late haha, 9 miles for me have cycled before takes an hour though, if it were me and i needed a job id take it, get up early every morning and buy a diesel, while in the meantime look for another job or move house!

I'm pretty lucky - I have about 4 miles to travel which takes about 20 minutes in the morning traffic. It's one of the best things about my job; that I can be home within half an hour of finishing work. When I start to look for a new role for progression I think that is going to be one of the things that hits me the hardest, especially given that it's looking likely that I'll have to work in London!

I used to have a 35 mile round trip which would usually take me 30 mins each way, save any accidents, traffic jams etc. Recently changed jobs, and now I'm about 4 miles away which is about 9 minutes drive, at least thus far, that is the longest it has taken me! Bliss!

well if i walk then most prob and hour and 10 mins i get up at about 5 and leave at about half 5 and get to work for say 6 / 6:30 to get in the shower or if i take my bike if i leave at 6 i get their for about 6:30 7:00

If you've got a Nokia, Sports Tracker will do the same thing free of charge, and I believe Endomondo will do the same for most phone platforms.

 

If you want a GPS for directions you can find phone mounts around for most phones - just get the GPS working, plug it into the mount and go.

I used to travel 3 buses to work and 3 buses home from one side of Birmingham to the other for 3 years..................now I am driving it's 15minutes down the motorway, yay !!!!!!
