How did your MP vote on the digital economy bill?

Mine didn't - GOOD !!

Not voting on it at all isn't good in my book - it's slightly better than voting for it, but really they should have been there voting against it. One Tory MP openly admitted that he didn't bother staying to vote against it because he felt it was a lost cause. How many others did the same? Enough to swing the vote?

My MP did not vote [actually according to the website (VoteThemOut.CO.UK) he "...didn't bother voting..."] which is different from abstaining [choosing not to vote]

 

Nevertheless I would have liked to have seen that:

 

1. He turned up for the vote
   
2. He actually took part in the democratic process [ie he voted]
   
3. He voted against the bill

 

I shouldn't be surprised though: He is after all a politician of a certain persuasion: One which I do not happen to agree with.

 

Edit: The MP who represents the ward that I work in also did not vote: Another politician of a certain persuasion [the same persuasion]

 

2nd Edit: The MP who represents the ward where I did my degree and where I had my digs did not vote.

 

3rd Edit: The MP who represents the ward where I used to work a few years ago [about 12] did not vote.

 

4th Edit: The MP who represents the ward where I used to work a few years before the job in the third edit did not vote.

 

Running total now 5 MPs who did not vote where I have lived or worked in the past.

 

I also worked in Southwark and according to the website: "...MP Simon Hughes opposed..."

 

Well done Simon!

 

Did anyone [other than S. Hughes] vote on this bill?

My MP didn't vote, nor did my brothers, nor my parents'. Anyone seeing a pattern? (And yes, they're 3 different MPs, all west yorks, including our "freind" Balls)

And it gives the correct member of Parliament when returning a result.

That shows 48 MPs voting against the bill and 191 in favour. That is a total of 239 who voted one way or the other.

 

There are 646 seats in the House of Commons. That means that 407 MPs did not vote. OK remove the speaker. That still leaves 406 eligible MPs who did not vote on this bill.

 

Disgraceful. Something can be passed into law when less than 37% of the potential votes have been cast/counted.

 

I am appalled but not surprised as it was ever thus.

John, my parents live in Wakefield and get to have Ed Balls as their MP. I believe my dad has personally let Mr Balls know what he thinks about him (Newton Sr. is an ex-teacher, and no great fan of our Ed)

Take it one step further, looking at the number of votes they actually received at the election time... You're getting in to tiny amounts of actual representation by the people supposed to be representing the county's interests...

That's nothing. RIPA was passed in 2000 with only 30 MPs present, a turnout of 4.5%.

Anyhow it matters not as someone has already said, Members of Parliament have previously won their right to not bother voting by a smaller percentage of people voting for them. How contrary is that.

 

Plus, if there was half the amount of discussion about all of this more often than every five years, then maybe the state of the nation wouldn't be half as bad as it is.

I think that the website VoteThemOut.co.uk - How did your MP vote on the digital economy bill? deliberately presents the data [in the case of the non-voters] in an inflammatory manner.

My Labour MP Gisela Stewart (Lab, Bham Edgbaston) (Her values are Labour, but she has a mind of her own, as her local leaflets tell us which I take to mean "I'm screwed") was absent.

 

My Dad's MP (Lab, South Derbyshire) voted against it. He's retiring at the end of this Parliament, so one would hope he voted for the people rather than for the whip.

My MP Lynne Jones Opposed, fair play to her shame shes standing down....

 

I just sent her an email asking for a better explanation as to how things like this are allowed to go through when so many MPs didnt vote.
