I work for a local council with six clusters, so six of us doing the role around multiple primary and high schools. We have the rest of the corporate IT side in head office who deal with the infrastructure, call logging (service desk etc) whereas we deal with issues in schools. Meet my fellow techs one morning each week and sometimes go to the head office to pick up new kit etc, but generally do our own thing most of the time. Have great relations with all school staff, get good banter which keeps us all going. 99.99% of the pupils from nursery up to S6 are brilliant, don't get hassled from them. They all know who I am as they've seen me throughout their whole school lives (been doing this for nearly 12 years) I love it, don't really see it as a job as I enjoy it so much. Enjoy coming in to work, don't get any hassles really (usual moans from teaching staff that are just them venting really because I'm there). The way I see it, and mentioned to a new start a month or so ago. If you deal with the jobs you get added to your queue, you won't get any hassle from our manager.

A deputy head teacher asked me for a mouse with a ball. I asked why she needed one of them, said I didn't think we've had any for a while. Turns out she got a 'One Direction' mouse mat with white areas, so the mouse she has doesn't work properly.

One of the problems even with setting the time restrictions is parents doing the tests for their kids during school time.

Just a little heads up on this. I was stopped the other day by a DHT who told me a parent has downloaded an iPad app that allowed her and her child to do one of the tests at home. I haven't had much to do with accelerated reader as it's all web based so phoned them to see how we could stop this. I was told that the terms and conditions of using AR state that pupils should not do tests at home, unfortunately we can't stop people doing things that they shouldn't be doing so needed a way to stop it. I probably worded it wrong to their help guys but they told me the only way to stop people doing tests at home was to restrict access via IP address. I asked about teachers then accessing it at home, again could only be done by IP address. He expected all teachers that wanted access to have a static IP address so that it could be added to the allowed list. (I was also told that teachers don't take work home so there shouldn't be any need for them to access it at home?) Anyway, after actually looking at AR I found in the Security Options section you can restrict the student only area by IP address. I've added in the local authority IP address and now it can only be used within schools. Teachers can still access their section within the site using their own details. What it does mean is that each school how uses AR will need to add in the IP address facing out to the interent. Simple enough to do, steps are below. 1) Log in to ‘Teacher/Administrator' section 2) Click ‘Renaissance Place’ 3) Click ‘Product Administration’ 4) Click ‘Set Security Options for Students’ 5) Click in the box on the right hand side and type in the appropriate IP Address 6) Select the ‘Do not show’ option 7) Click the Done button Parents can still access the HomeConnect site to check on their childs progress.

My Mums 60th in December, she's just been away on holiday so we said she could have her present early and we got her a Kindle and filled it with loads of her favourite authors. She loves it, has read so much more that normal (Dad says it was great, peace and quiet...) Of course this means she'll have to get another present on her actual birthday...

Have you tried a different browser? Had issues a few weeks ago on Win7 machines with an IE Update that broke it.

Think Nook have totally underestimated how popular this offer would be. I too ordered it on the first day, they had payment problems for everyone so all orders were cancelled. I ordered a new touch one, then got the e-mail saying there were none in stock so ordered the glow one (for my Mum's 60th). Tried e-mailing, tweeting, chatting, phoning, no help at all. Not the best advert for them. Not sure what/if I'm going to actually get anything, not had any e-mails from them since Satuday.

Seeing the same problem where the DVD drive works away like mad but seemingly does nothing. Also tried new version, same thing happens. Just tried using the older version and it works too. On a new profile it builds the font cache then does nothing for approx 15 seconds then plays.

The janitor in my main school was a joiner, I'll forward this on to him to see if he's ever seen anything like this...

The school janitor has so many teachers convinced the heating system has a damaged 'fu fu valve', they fall for it every time.

We had similar with Dell laptops. The touchpad was really sensitive (not in a moody way...), they just had to lightly brush it with their wrists and it would do funny things. The best time to call Sky to cancel, get a better deal etc is a Thursday evening before 10pm. The folk that work there get a 'bonus' for every person they get to change their package or stay with Sky. Their bonus ends at 10pm on a Thursday night so they will do more to get that last few bonuses. If your sky box is faulty, anyone you call at Sky can get you a free box.

You can set an image as a background, not sure if you can select one of your own. A mate of mine is a developer and was showing it off in the pub last week. He's found quite a few problems though with the release he has so there's definately loads of fixing required.
