How do you use Edugeek Forums?

I'm trying to see if a feature request that I've been after for years is down to my peculiar surfing habits or not

 

Could people post how they physically use the forums.

 

e.g I have Edugeek permently open as a tab in FF and I click on Your Alerts and check my Inbox and reply to any PMs and then I click on Home and then New Posts

 

(I don't actually do the Alerts/Home actions - I'm just using this as an example of what I'm looking for and I don't want to prejudice anyone )

Well, generally land on the front page, and than take a peek what's on there, or at least used to. Browse various topics, than close the tab and reopen via Chrome. Single click and back where I want to be.

 

Don't generally navigate backwards, only fowards.

I have iSpy running in the background and push email to my phone for PMs. That way every post goes past me sooner or later (contrary to common belief in some circles, the only things I stalk are posts).

Currently have Edugeek open in an FF tab, on the Home page. Check the recent posts, now have to scroll down to look at that. Go to What's New and scan down the posts, open any I'm interested in on a new tab to look at later, that way I don't lose the whole new posts list.

 

When I'm at work and at my workstation, I often have ispy open and pop back into that on a regular basis.

Advanced search, single content type, replies "at most 0".

Click advanced search, choose Search Single Content Type and enter your search terms (changing the number of posts to 'At most 0').

I don't check Edugeek whilst at work so often have 5 or 6 pages to browse through when I get home.

 

I tend to just click on the New Posts link and take it from there.

I have an RSS of the last 15 posts in Firefox Toolbar. Unfortunately it doesnt seem to autorefresh (even before the change).

 

I also use ispy, and check my subscribed threads

Anyway... I just use the 'New Posts' link and tend to press the back button on my mouse to keep going back to the list.

 

If the feature is downloading the new posts straight into your bnrain Si, I'm afraid that's not due until the next version of the 'Geek

I open Chrome and type "E" in the address bar which takes me to "new posts" (because it's remembered edugeek.net/forums/search.php?do=getnew) and glance through the new posts.

 

I believe there is other stuff there but I'm afraid I don't notice most of it :-) (although I have noticed that the new layout seems to have far more white space than previously - all the stuff on the left just seems far more space out so a 2-3 line post takes up a good chunk of the screen. For example, in this thread powdarrmonkey and localzuk have posts with 2 and 1 lines of actual message but between them they take up my entire screen height!)

Same as srochford - Type 'ed' into the address bar of Chrome/Opera (depending on where I am, home or work) and go to the first result - "New Posts" link.

Same as webman/srochford - Type "ed" into the Chrome address bar and hit enter which takes me to the "New Posts" screen. After the first browse I tend to stick ispy on. If I've been away from my machine for a while I'll go back to the new posts screen and see what I've missed.

New post, well I did. Missing it now. (not moaning) open threads in new tab (ctrl + click). I usually have new posts, general, and red door. When I want home page click the logo at the top

I have a bookmark to the New Posts search URL and open that in a new tab whenever I have a spare few minutes. Typically, that happens fewer than half a dozen times per day.

i read edugeek off my ipad while updating twitter and watching the wire in starbucks while being creative! Usually it will be a tofu and passion fruit pie liquidised into a frothy non skinny frapalattechino with a sprinkling of fair trade cocaine on the top!

 

Actually I usually click on the edugeek logo to see the latest posts, then go to subscribed threads and *sometimes* click on new posts as well

I tend to have edugeek open where ever i am and then i use the new posts function and read near enough everyone and reply where i can or/ at least add some input if i think it is appropriate

 

Also have Emails going to email, and then pushed to mobile and i have RSS Feeds

Press E in Firefox and bang its new posts and like Ric read every thread, don't often get time at work to read them so often come home to 6 or 7 pages of new posts a day to read (so can take over 2hrs!) but I do try to read everything going

tend to check new posts a few times a day, have ispy open and look at that, and look at subscribed threads to see if I missed any replies - i usually did!

Just for the record - what I used to do was read subscribed threads and answer anything there first and then go to todays posts to see if there was anything relavent/interesting there.

 

But the new setup makes this process very very awkard

I go straight to the Forums and then click on Settings (in the box with my avatar top right) to see my subscribed threads

 

I then click on New Posts... I agree that it would be useful if Today's Posts were more generally available; it was handy when it was in the drop down box and you could get at it from everywhere

I must admit that I do find it more difficult to navigate around than I did but this is probably just familiarity. I find the colours a bit wishy washy as well Edited April 22, 2010 by witch
