Tunster Posted January 26, 2010 Posted January 26, 2010 As much as I respect people who run internet forums (spending a lot of time behind the scenes and in their own time!), if it's the silliness concerning a couple of members who've turned up lately (causing a huge response in a couple of threads); isn't it a bit of an over-reaction? I know there was a bit of friction, but shouldn't the warning be targeted at the individuals rather than the majority that are sensible here? 99% of the posts here are still informative and tie the line with the websites aims. However, we're all still human and the fun element of any forum keeps me on one. I fully respect the importance; but I don't think it was that serious (unless I've missed something in the last few days). 1

I dare say I will be shot down in flames but I would like to know. As a new visitor reading these forums some of the posts made by mods give the impression that they have a more in depth role than just moderating the forums. So when these members are then see taking part in light hearted discussions, directing comments at suppliers, you can see how normal members will either see it as a green light to continue, or on the other hand get upset when they are pulled up on similar posts. I do not make this comment to cause offense but to suggest something that may help stop this happening in the future. 2

Mod's moderate... break up fights, kill off spammers, etc God is God... as founder of the site he can do as he darn well pleases, including tell us off when he's had enough of the bickering 1

What does an Admin do and what does a Mod do? And my own feeling is that a lot of the problems stem from the fact that the technical forums are now an unnavigatable mess. I don't look at them, I look at technical posts on the front page and that's all. I can't really be bothered to scroll through a list of millions of forums most of which overlap or apply to technology that's used by a very small number of people. Seriously do we need a dedicated Netware forum? There were 6 posts in there last year, surely it should come under *nix. If the Netware forum is to stay it should be listed with the other server OSes, not between Learning Network Manager (what's that forum for anyway?) and Network and Classroom Management. Net result BTRD and GD tend to be the sections I look in most. They are also the two forums where I will make a flippant rather then a useful post. Look a the RM Communities Forum where there is a page dedicated to listing the moderators. Maybe that idea could be used and expanded with more information. Gareth

What I don't get is the over-reaction over a couple of threads. I find it to be a bit of a kill-joying but I'm not making the rules, so I don't mind what mods/admins do. Telling people to be over-cautious is just as bad as not having any rules.

But if it's the same people that are creating threads inappropriately across the site; isn't that a lack of moderating/managing those individuals (even if the posts arent malicious or offending)? The OP is pretty generic and doesn't spell out anything new (or the situation if there was any) to what the rules are or the atmosphere is already (which is very sensible and informative down to the general nature of the people working in that industry).
