There are dream jobs and there are reality jobs that you might "actually" do. I would like to be a rock star, a writer, an actor etc..

More likely within a few years (if not still in IT) will probably be doing electrical work with my brother perhaps starting our own small business.

I'm lucky that I'm a qualified Counsellor and Hypnotherapist specialising in PTSD and sports development, and am currently working on becoming a qualified Psychotherapist. So I guess if I wasnt workning in IT I'd be asking if you wanted fries with that!!

Army, if Mrs Angry Technician would let me. I was in the TA for a year at university but didn't have enough time to commit to the physical training so ended up utterly exhausted whenever we were in the field. You never know your limits until you've spent a whole weekend running around in the pouring rain with only 3 hours sleep in the last 72 hours.

Some days I still miss it. Then I remember being up at dawn every morning, and I don't miss it so much. My then-girlfriend-now-wife never liked the idea of me being in so it was probably for the best in the long term.

I love civil aviation as a second interest. so I would love to integrate working with IT or engineering work with an airline.

I am fascinated about why airlines suffer accidents and how they can be prevented so would love to be an air crash investigator.

I would like to work in the Fire Service in Operational Support doing various support roles, to be honest I dont ever really want to think about not working in IT, I wouldnt know what to do with myself if I wasnt.

I really, really, really wanted to be a Barrister. That was until I got a 'D' in my GCSE English resits and a 'D' in GCSE Law.

Often thought about joining the Police as a Special...

Ironic question as I've been pondering this one myself for the past 3 months.

I'm 30 now, starting to reflect... choices made, opportunities ignored and taken... all that.

I'm in IT now simply because of my situation. I was born with a severe visual impairment.

Because of that alone, my fields of work were severely limited and still are - perhaps even more so with H&S and everyone scared of being sued...

I honestly don't know what I'd do. It's kinda like Brooks in Shawshank... IT is all I've ever known, if I wasn't doing it... I think I'd go crazy and not in a good way.

But I dunno... as a kid I wanted to be a pilot, policeman... you name it, all the usual jobs kids come up with that are mostly unrealistic.

Now... something that means I do a good days' work for a good days' pay - maybe something that lets me be creative in another way. Thought about working as Vet Assistant but my eyesight just ain't good enough. Not to mention I'd get attached to the animals, no matter how many times I'd tell myself not to.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them... I'm already looking at the variety in this thread and thinking them over... I mean... Porn Star would be great - but it'd be alot of moaning for nothing really... much like an agony uncle ;)

...what career would you go into instead?

Been thinking about this as I'm not sure IT is gonna be such a great place to be in the future so been wondering what I'd do if not this... maybe something to do with cars but then might be a good idea to do a job I'd hate instead of one that makes your hobbies boring after working with them all day :p

Always wanted to be a Paramedic. Still want to be a Paramedic. Failing that I would love to go back and train to be a Doctor of Medicine.

It's a question I've thought long and hard about previously.

I agree with someone earlier on the coach driver job - would definately love to do that one day (not sure why, just always wanted to lol!). National Express or private tours would be cool! :)

Apart from that, possibly do what I do now but in Europe - maybe France or Spain. I think anywhere where the Government don't steal so much from you while giving you so little back. (Sorry, I know that's not technically quiting IT, but it's quiting the bad aspect of IT + School + UK way of working!)

I still want to go and do techy stuff in a theatre, I love all that stuff (hence my love of west end shows, love the show but also spend the time counting the lights and working out the rigging etc). Love sound and AV stuff so that would be good. Also would probably enjoy some form of forensics, I enjoy a good problem to get stuck into so that maybe a good one, not wanting dead bodies and stuff, but the one that does finger printing, ballistics, electronical digging such as searching hard drives etc...

I won't be in IT forever I don't expect so the theatre is calling me I suspect.....
