We are using Joomla and the banners functionality to display a few images on our homepage. Is there anyway to have a youtube or similar video play in a javascript type pop-out window when one of the banner images is clicked? Ideally I want the video file to overlay the rest of the site, which should dim into the background whilst the video is being played. I have researched this on the web but the more information I read, the less it seems to make sense to me! Any tips would be great! Thanks

Thanks guys, it will be at least a couple of days before I see the phone but will let you know how I get on!

Hi all, A friend has an iPhone with a completely broken screen and wants to recover the data from it. The laptop that it was originally synced with is long gone and syncing with a new one will wipe all of the data. Is there any software that I can use, either Mac or PC, that will allow me to recover all of the data? Pictures should be fairly easy but the phone was locked with a pass code and most image retrieving applications do require this to be entered on the phone before getting any data off. After this it is more SMS/Contacts/etc that she wants. Any tips? Thanks

Yes that's possible but it's not in an obvious place - I struggled with this at first as well! If you drag the tracks/playlist into the list on the bottom right hand side and then click on the little circle with the lightning bolt(?) in it, VDJ will play through the tracks and automix. You can rearrange further down the list when it is playing and add/remove tracks as you desire. Clicking on the little scroll will also give you more options to customise the automix feature.

Love the fact that the speedo optimistically goes to 180mph. We used to have a Pajero (another Jap import) that did exactly the same thing, always used to make me laugh.

Can't be off this Virtual DJ Used it for years both personally and professionally. The free version should be fine for your needs and as mentioned, it allows playlist creation and the ability to add stuff in automatically. PM me if you get stuck with it! Tom

Has anybody had much experience with Amazon Web Services? We are looking to use some S3 storage with a couple of EC2 instances and have no idea about backing them up etc. Any information is much appreciated! Thanks Tom

You can quote your price for a project and set milestones along the way for part payments i.e. not wait for the entire job to be complete before paying in full. Also, deposits can be requested for work. The biggest advice I would give you is to checkout the references and profiles of anybody that you are considering doing work for. Treat the system similarly to eBay i.e. only buy from trusted sellers, high feedback, etc. Tom

We have been using Freelancer, ELance, and ODesk for a long time now to find outsourcers for a variety of different projects. Overall I would checkout ODesk as we have had much more success with this than the other two put together. You didn't mention if you would be using the service to look for work for yourself, or to hire somebody to do a job. If you are looking to hire somebody, be very careful with your replies. No matter what you post you will get lots of replies saying that they are able to do the job, but many have either not understood the job posting fully, or even read it at all. It's a good idea to have a good long chat with anybody you are thinking of hiring either over the phone or via Skype, and don't be afraid to ask a million questions of them. If they genuinely are capable of doing the job they will not take offence at being grilled thoroughly! Tom

Hi all, long time without posting but have come against a problem. We are looking to create some video content for our website and want the parents to be able to download the videos as well as being able to watch them online. At the moment the videos are flash files which works brilliantly for being able to view them online - but obviously not for download. In order to download the videos we wish to create a "branded" player with links back to the school website, etc, without branding the actual video. I'm fairly sure that I have seen this done before using self-contained swf files or similar, but if somebody could point me into the right kind of direction it would be very much appreciated. The download files must run cross platform (PC/Mac/Linux?) if at all possible, whilst at the same time making it as simple as possible for the user (i.e. no installation required etc). Thanks

Correct above that on a licence obtained after the 1997 limit you can tow a trailer up to 750KG so long as the total train weight (car+trailer) does not exceed 3500KG. Not quite so simple as this though. You can only tow a trailer that only has the capacity of 750KG total weight. i.e. Towing an empty car transporter trailer weighing 400KG, but that is capable of weighing 3000KG with a full load is illegal, regardless of how much it weighs at the time of towing. So long as the trailer has a total weight limit of 750KG or less (trailer dry weight plus load), you will be fine.

Thanks for the reply - I'm a little bit weary of going with Toshiba though as the only one I had was the biggest pile of rubbish ever. I know I most likely had a bad one, but it tends to put you off doesn't it! Will check this one out though.

Hi all My younger brother is off to University in months time and is looking to buy a laptop. Looking to spend £400 at the absolute most, less if possible. He will only be using it for general Uni work (word processing/spreadsheets/presentations/etc) as well as a little bit of iPlayer and the usual Facebook etc, so it doesn't need to be incredibly powerful. Any recommendations you have would be much appreciated. Many thanks Tom

25M cable to connect anothe building? is it possible
SC-UK replied to lionsl2005's topic in Wireless Networks
When running cable externally between two buildings it's always better to use Fibre rather than copper cable. If the two buildings are likely to be on two different electricity phases, or the cable gets struck by lightning you are in for a whole world of hurt - sometimes literally! Tom I should note - two different electricity phases won't ordinarily be a problem, but if something goes wrong with one of the devices on either end you will end up with a PD of nearly 500V. -
Is there any contents that you need to copy as well or is it just a folder? If nothing in the folder then you should be able to script it with: md A1 md A2 etc

02 Network down for everyone, or just some places?
SC-UK replied to pete's topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Currently in Spalding, and not had any issues whatsoever. -
Same here near Peterborough - just had a complete power cut for nearly 15 minutes.

Surely it would be fairly easy to build something simple in Access, or even Excel to achieve this?

To search for plist files you need to enable system files in Finder search. Type this into Terminal: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE killall Finder To turn system file finder searching back off again the command is simply: defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE killall Finder Tom

Also, when you've found and deleted the file, make sure you empty the trash before relaunching Server Admin. OSX has a useful, but often annoying, habit of knowing where files are that have been moved and deleted, and still trying to use them until they are properly gone.

If you open finder and browse to Home/Library/Preferences/ it should be in there. If not, try MacintoshHD/Library/Preferences. Tom

Go into Module Manager > Curriculum Menu At the bottom where you select the pages it is allowed to be displayed on, make sure that the specific page in question is selected in TWO places. Needs to be selected as if you have accessed the page both from the curriculum menu, and from the top menu. Tom

Looks like it's just a case of a simple typo on the discussion board - try searching for, and deleting com.apple.ServerAdmin.plist instead

When I first got my MacBook Pro it did exactly the same thing a couple of weeks later. Finally turned on again and is still going strong 18 months later

I use a great bit of software, although not sure how it works for multiple users etc. DefaultFolderX Amongst other things, it allows you to set the default save path per application / for all applications / etc. Very useful.
